*This is my second WEN tool and they are both great **MyBest.Tools** I needed to do some trim work around the house and needed a scroll saw for the intricate work. No complaints so far.*
Doug, I don’t carve or know what a scroll saw is for I watch some of your videos solely because I like watching you and your videos are always good. I love your little family of carvings and enjoy watching another one come to life. Besides no new knowledge is wasted.
just got my first DeWalt after 12 years of porter cable....i will never go back...what a great machine. thanks for all your vids brother....your kinda my mentor.
Bought the dewalt scroll saw around 18 years ago. What a wonderful machine. Never thought about a footpeddle, great idea. The scroll saw and 9 inch bandsaw. Makes carving larger pieces much easyer.
Doug , I a look ways enjoy your carving videos , you are a talented carved and a natural at teaching. My tip : when cutting out the blank I make the first cut completely , then simply wrap the piece with clear packing tape to mold the pattern while making the final cut. Am looking g forward to your next video.
Always watch Doug's video's,,,just a visual tip or technique can be priceless......I have also spent many years as a tradesman,,and the amount of junk tools I have purchased just to save a buck has really cost me twice as much.........For a while now I also use that phrase "Buy Once,,Cry Once".....whether it be tools, hiking gear or anything else,,the "cheaper/lesser" item usually gets put on a shelf or given away,,and replaced by the better ,first choice,, at a later time.......good "tool time" video...always a good time...
This is spot on as for me. I'm saying that price for good tools isn't remember as long as the quality of a great tool or any product. Thanks for giving your far resection of tools. Let quality be spoken about. So much junk trying to take the money market. Thanks for teaching me. I'm having fun.
This Video just popped up, Your Carving Videos have helped immensely !! , You got a Great Teaching Style . I finally finished my first 5 Minute Wizard after 4 trys at it 🤷♂️. I have just started my 2nd Bear now ( first had a hunting accident I shared ) 😜 . I've been Scrolling for years my DeWalt is right at 15 yrs old an gets at least 1 hour run time most days , Sometimes I get a bit crazy an hang with it for 8-10 hrs , No complaints with the tool at all , I've done a few questionable task with it 🙀. A lot of Folks are not aware you can get metal cutting blades for them as well . Anyway Thanks Again ✌️.
Hello Doug ! Well showed. I like the way you express yourself, it is interesting and never boring. I need more of that. Please, keep them coming .Many thanks
A very mountain man direct informative video; a breath of fresh air; to over done production videos. I look forward to your next video, Doug. I'm already a subscriber, so I'll just thumb's up this one.
Doug I do carving and wood burning and now have scroll saw Dewalt. I have used a scroll less expensive saw before and did lots of projects but decided to move up and love it. I watch your carving all the time ,happy that you do scroll saw and I know you do carving do you do wood burning? Julien
Hi Doug. Hope you and the family are all well. Thank you for another great video. I love the way you explain things in a simple way. It does make following what you are doing so much easier for people like myself who have mental health problems. What you do is great. Thank you. Wayne (From the U.K 🇬🇧)
I was super excited when I saw this view pop up. I’ve tried a few different methods with a scroll saw and never had much success. Kicking myself now though that I never once though stop the cut, such a simple and effective plan. Can’t wait now to try again! Thanks Doug. I appreciate these quick tips and how too’s just as much as the full on productions.
Thanks for the video. Love how you keep things in perspective for us newer carvers. Like many out there, I own a scroll saw, but not a band saw and this was very helpful.
Sometimes I get "lost" on some of the bigger carvings I have tried. I have gotten a book or two from Mike Shippley for the country folk and country bears. i have yet to really come out with a project from those books. i have been carving for about 6 months, i think my ambition out paced my skill. for now, i put those books up and i have been doing a lot of your videos with great success. Even tho it is April, I carved your pumpkin with a face on it. My wife is working in ICU unit for COVID 19. She is in isolation and not coming home so as not to spread it. She was thrilled with the pumpkin. Thanks for your videos!
Buy once, cry once. This is a phrase that I will be using from now on. It expresses just perfectly in a simple short saying. That makes the highlight reel for me.
Doug, Great video. Never thought that is how to make a small carving. Don't apologize for your videos. I find them always interesting even though I am not a wood worker. Have a great day. Greetings from the Arrowhead.
Awesome little cut out and tutorial on using the scroll saw it does look like it was a Time saver thanks again take care and a little gnome is really cute looking you did fantastic job can't wait to see you finished with a painting
I do have a scroll saw, so thank you for sharing. I watch you faithfully and have been carving for a few months thanks to you. I do have some bass wood coming my way (SC), with friends from Grimsby Ont. in a few weeks and I will pick up more when I make my annual trip to the French River area this summer. Keep up the videos they are great and very helpful.
I don't know if it was meant to be, but this is a great instructional video for a Skill Saw. I have a band saw and have always wondered what the main difference was between the two. Seeing how you could quickly change the blade and lift the piece off of it is a selling point for me. Another awesome video, thanks Doug!
Good video. I have a scroll saw and band saw and like you I hate changing the blades. I do some re-sawing with my band saw so tend to keep a bigger blade on it. Your video gives me a clue what it means to leave a portion of the block on when cutting the second side of the roughout. Keep up the good work.
you are becoming one of my favorite RUclipsrs and yea the freeform thing is fine everything does not have to be a production the learning is what most people are here for anyway
Hey , Doug this was a real treat . I have always tried to copy the pattern onto the block with copy paper. That spray glue does it for me, I started doing small birds , fox and dogs , spoons and such and did not have a band saw till just recently. My small scroll saw is just a shorty but so far so good. I am limited in space. Thanks again for another great Vid. Chuck
Great idea Doug, it's a great place to start a carving , like you said it gives you reference points for shape and details , saves loads of time just hacking off waste wood and saves dulling your tools so less stropping !!!... what's not to like 👍👍👍👍👌🇬🇧
I'm not into carving, but still a cool video. It's fun to watch you and support your channel. I really like your outdoor videos, especially your opposite videos when with Joe. You both seem real and great friends when together. Keep up the vids Doug.
Like the idea of these videos answering questions..and having both saws it would be nice to see more vids about these in the future :)..but obviously the carving vids are king..Cheers Doug
Hi Doug , love your attitude in regards to cutting out shapes with the smaller saw ,it puts a hole New way to start a carving project plus changing from carving by hand to save time, I love carving and I look forward to seeing what you can get up to. So far I’ve carved 5 animals and 2 spoons and 3 walking sticks . Just from watching your channel
Good advice on tools and purchasing them, buy the best that you can afford, and you will not be sorry. Gnomes are fun to carve, I like the Tom Hindes patterns Looking forward to your next video Thanks
Thanks Doug! I have been thinking about this but have yet to research the Rough Out details. I am a "newbie" so anything helps! Keep the videos flowing... they are always useful! :)
I watched this today which led me to want to watch.."The 5 minute wizard" or your take on it..tutorial you did. That vid reminded me of a tree I know and why I @ you today for my pic on Instagram! Lol. I just knew you of all people would appreciate that pic for what it was! And I learned something too! Thank you for your time doug!
Enjoyed it immensely. It really gave me some ideas, as I usually carve on hardwood and this approach could really save me some time. Thank you for sharing.
Doug, thanks so much for showing some of the tools you use in your shop !!! For me, this stuff is interesting !! Your friend here in southwest Michigan, Cliff
I like making a roughout because it also helps keep the proportions more symmetrical on the carving. I have an old Craftsman scrollsaw that I really love (has good power) but changing out the blades is a PITA. Really like the way the Dewalt has that quick release. Good video kind sir.
Nice Doug Linker...mad skills! Started watching with the camping vids, nice just like to see the background of the skills. Not much of a winter camper? Not my thing (much) anymore either! I'll be out there soon, but doubt you'll ever see my vids, haha. Happy Trails!
Perfect Timing! Thank you Doug! I have been trying to determine this very thing for the past couple weeks. Excellent Video!!! I really like all of your videos. You’re a great instructor! And I’ve always shared you opinion on “Buy Once, Cry Once”, but I didn’t have a oil saying for it. Gonna our that one in my back pocket. Ha.
Thanks Doug, I have wondered about using my scroll saw for small carvings. This is a good video. Regarding wearing your glasses, whether you need them for seeing or not, as you know, safety glasses are an essential for use with power tools. Those tiny scroll saw blades break and you would be surprised at how far and at what velocity a projectile fragment can fly out and possibly do permanent damage to your eye, face etc. This is free advice from me, a physician and woodworker, who has seen some real ugly injuries from not wearing proper safety equipment. Please protect your eyes. Not a rant, just an honest concern for your well being and safety. Cheers, Michael O’Brien USA
I used to have an old Craftsman scroll saw and it bounced all over the place. Probably because it was unbalanced and about as old as I was at the time! LOL but I like the part buy once cry once theory. Thank you for your videos, Keep them coming.
Nice informative video Doug! This would definitely speed up carving once you have a certain pattern you use all the time. Also, less wear and tear on your hands and thumb.
Great video Doug. I can attest to a higher quality saw. While working at an Ace Hardware after my first retirement the manager gave me an Ace brand scroll saw that had been used as a demo and couldn't be sold. I have never refused a freebe but in this case I should have left it there for the next guy to accept. I have used it a half dozen times and always get frustrated with it. Blade changes require an Allen wrench, the tension is always messed up. I spend more time with set-ups than using it.
Morning Doug, I look forward to your videos. Can't hardly wait for "CARVING AND COFFEE" even have a Doug outside coffee mug. Thanks for teaching me the hobby.....
Hey Doug great tutorial, but like you say you do need a more powerful Scroll Saw and good blades, or somethings going to break depending also what type of wood your using. You do good works man, keep it up. Regards from John in England.
I have the same saw, also have a pedal on mine as well. The pedal I use is variable though instead of a "deadman switch type". I love the ability to vary speed without having to touch the knob. You can get em on Amazon for under 20 bucks. 15 amp is fine, that saw only pulls 2.1 amps if I remember correctly. Also, look into flying dutchman, spiral blades. Some of the best blades out there. Just started reading up on Pegas blades, supposed to be even better then FD blades. ATB, Cris.
Scroll saw cut out would maybe save me some time on sharpening my knives too. I suck at sharpening knives! It really shows in the detail work areas. I strop, but need to perfect getting them sharp first. Thanks for the video Doug.
Mr. Doug Linker. Sometimes in using a scroll saw I cut one side, glue it back with a few drops of glue and cut the other sides. This way you always have a flat spot.
Nice vid! Say, I wonder if you could do a quick vid on building a display like the one behind you that holds all your carved figures. I have a bunch of animal salt and pepper shakers that need a home. Somehow, quite a few of them seem to be rabbits...I think they’re multiplying while I’m not looking. Good advice on the scroll saw Doug. I have had the same saw for 20 years. It doesn't get used that often but when it does it's a pleasure to use.

I use a little drop of hot glue to temporarily attach side pieces that fall off and are needed to keep it flat for cutting the other side.
Great little tutorial, thanks for all of the time you take out to help us all along. 👍

Hey Doug love your fishing and camping videos, really like the ones when you and Joe Robinet are together, you guy's are a team!!
Hey Doug, I watched the scroll saw vid, because I'm considering buying one and it made sense to be educated about the brand and uses. cheers mate.

Enjoyed it immensely. It really gave me some ideas, as I usually carve on hardwood and this approach could really save me some time. Thank you for sharing.

Chris here in Denver Doug. Very informative video. Thanks. Keep em coming my friend.
Thanks for this, Doug! I've been hesitant to try the scroll saw... you make it look easy! 😎
Awesome video again Doug! Thank you for sharing this with us. 👍😁

Great idea Doug. I have done similar cutting for compound cutting of chess pcs. Will have to get the saw started again. Thanks for the video!
Thank you Doug, I have a scroll saw that I use for my crafts. That was very useful.
Love the content and the straight matter of fact always do your thing thanks for sharing

Great job Doug! I always learn something from your videos. I have the same saw and love to use it. I use glasses AND a magnifier.
nice to see u back - almost canoein time lol - take care
Great job. Now that’s a tool I’m comfortable with and made a few videos myself with it. Great compound cut!
Hi Doug, That was interesting - My scroll saw burnt out years ago I forgot how versatile It was . ozzy.
That was a great video Doug and very interesting to see how you use a scroll saw ...... Keep Safe
Nice informative video Doug! This would definitely speed up carving once you have a certain pattern you use all the time. Also, less wear and tear on your hands and thumb.

Morning Doug, thanks for another great vid.
Thank you , Doug .
Thanks. It does remove a lot of wood. Appreciate seeing how it's done.
Great info ! I don't have a band saw, but I do have a scroll saw! This will work greatly for me! 👍👍👍
They both have their place depends on what size and what kind of wood you're using. Keep up your videos they're good
Morning Doug, I look forward to your videos. Can't hardly wait for "CARVING AND COFFEE" even have a Doug outside coffee mug. Thanks for teaching me the hobby.....
Good Info. Thank you, Doug! Peace and Good Fortune to you and your family!
Great video as always Doug.
Really nice work! Thanks for the advice about the bandsaw.
Hey Doug great tutorial, but like you say you do need a more powerful Scroll Saw and good blades, or somethings going to break depending also what type of wood your using. You do good works man, keep it up. Regards from John in England.

great video Doug will try this.

Thanks Doug!
I love the Delta it was a workhorse for sure
Great work Linka !
Got my first band saw recently. Thanks
Hi Doug, The video was a perfect tutorial
Nice vid! Say, I wonder if you could do a quick vid on building a display like the one behind you that holds all your carved figures. I have a bunch of animal salt and pepper shakers that need a home. Somehow, quite a few of them seem to be rabbits...I think they’re multiplying while I’m not looking. Might need more than one rack...!
