  • Are you a gardener... and a potter? How about making your own personalized veggie and herb markers/stakes? In this video, I show you how! You can make just a few or a whole bunch. It's up to you. You can just use scraps of slabs from other projects, or one big slab! You can write on the stakes or use letter stamps like I do in this video. Then add some texture to personalize even more. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

    They are looking great! But how do you do to glaze both sides? Are you using stilts?

      Thank you!. I put underglaze on both sides but only glaze on the front side. Then I fire them flat. Since the clay is vitrified at cone 6 it doesn't need the glaze on the whole piece. But if you want to glaze the whole piece stilts should work. 🙂

    Made 15 of these today at my local community studio. They are now between two boards drying. When I take them back to the studio, will I apply the under glaze to both sides, wipe away, then once dry, have them fired?? Once this is done, Is this when the clear top coat gets applied… before the second firing? I want mine to look like these. Thanks

      That is great! Usually I bisque them and then apply the underglaze and clear glaze and fire the 2nd time. When I am sponging back I prefer to do it on bisque. If I am not sponging back underglaze and I'm just applying it as a decoration I will do that on greenware. Usually when its bone dry. But this is my preference and you don't have to do it the way I do it. Depending on how thick or thin your clear glaze is clear clays is you might want to brush it on. Or maybe you're using a brushable glaze. I find that it's hard to dip these since you only want it on one side. And I don't like waxing which you can do if you want to. It's actually probably easier that way if you're good at applying wax. I'm a little too messy.😁

      @@andreaakeribpottery Thanks for your reply and for clarifying the information. I will have them bisque fired, then apply the underglaze and clear glaze. I have NO experience with this, just using studio space for the project. I only know what you have taught in the video. I followed your suggestion of placing them in between two boards to dry. They have stayed straight and flat; I will clean them up today and take them back to studio next week. Most grateful for your help.

    Hi, great video. Does this clay need to be kiln fired? Thank you

    • @andreaakeribpottery

      Hi. Thank you! I use kiln fired clay. You need a clay that won't fall apart in water which is why I use fired clay. I am not sure if air dry clay would work.

    Underglaze on both sides? Won't it stick when you glaze fire? I'd use oxide for the back, myself... Mx

    • @andreaakeribpottery
      @andreaakeribpottery  4 года назад +1

      The Amaco underglazes do not stick as long as you don't put any other glaze on them. I haven't used Speedball but my understanding is that they also don't stick. I have no idea about other underglazes. They will sometimes leave a mark on the shelf - like a shadow - during the bisque. I am not sure why. But they don't stick.

    What type of clay is it?

    • @andreaakeribpottery
      @andreaakeribpottery  3 года назад +1

      I used Laguna 16 porcelain because I wanted a white background. You could use any white clay if you want to color with under glaze.

      I don't know much about polymer clay but I bet you could try it out and see if it works. Would be fun to make it in so many bright colours! You could make each one a different colour and then use a different colour clay to make the letters and decorations. Would be a fun project!
