Just had my first two matches at full power at an in-house low-level tournament. I'd say my fitness is my number one problem even though I have vastly improved it from when I started. Also I need to keep my arms in. Both matches my opponent took advantage of my arms being in bad positions.
Congrats on getting out there! Your fitness level will also improve as you become more proficient with the use of the techniques, wasting less energy 😊
Right now @ 44 yrs old my weakness is transitioning the way I roll in the gym to tournaments. I move more and make a lot more transitions when I roll in the gym vs tournaments where I feel I’m not as smooth and not as loose so it holds me back a lot.
I started BJJ in 2000 with my wife. We trained 4-5 days a week 2-3 hours a day. We trained and competed as white belts until 2004 when we both got our blue belts. Back then it was very tough to get promoted at least in our school. Alan Goes and like 3 other Gracie Black Belts had to approve us. Anyways - we trained as Blue Belts from 2004-until 2007 when we built a house an hour from our gym. An hour in Atlanta drive can be 2 hours or 3 if things go bad on the roads. Eventually we had kids and we stopped.. in October of 2023 I came back to train because my daughter wanted to train. Now I know the moves - My body is remembering but now I'm 48 - not 27. Now my body doesn't do what it did before and I'm busting my rear end to get back to what I was - tough as I know. I'm pretty competitive. I'm rolling with 18 year old Purple Belt Phenoms or 230 lb. blue belts and I'm 170. My brain is faster than my body... I'm not even sure what a purple belt would look like for me. It won't look the same as the 18 year old phenoms now.. kind of a bit disillusioned about what my options are.
My major weakness is guard retention. I've tried so many guards, but inevitably get passed then it's ball up and defend while my opponent attempts to smash me. If I get a top position, then all seems to be "satisfactory."
My major weakness is probably passivity/being too reactionary for my moves, as well as not finishing submissions I have set up 75% of the way. I've been trying to be more proactive by trying to setup go-to sequences I can hit from most positions 🤯
This is how I use instructionals. I don't rank myself as a "white belt", but each skill has its own rank. My back attacks are blue belt. My leglocks are white belt. Guillotine and closed guard, blue belt. Triangles and half guard, white belt.
Offensive takedowns and overall bottom guard. My strengths are passing, escapes, and general defense. Offense is non existent say for an arm bar or cross collar choke.
What are some of your gaps & weaknesses?

My two biggest weaknesses are my stand up and ground game.
