It was Faye's fault. She hung Warren out to dry when she called out the name.

Yeah but when they saw it said Emma Stone they should've just stopped and off-mic called the Accountant or someone and sorted it out. Warren actually did stop and hesitate but Faye just shotgunned the name La La Land. It was an impetuous decision on her part because she just wanted to get it over with and was probably feeling awkward about it.

The only explanation I have for this is Tina Fey... Faye Dunaway... Tina Fey?? No idea!
It was no one's fault except the accounting firm that handles the envelopes. But why he didn't just announce that he had the wrong card when he realized it read Best Actress and not Best Picture, I have no idea. The whole thing could've been solved before any name was announced and the La La Land group weren't halfway through their speeches.
To be fair, in terms of not announcing he had the wrong card, let us not forget that this particular situation had never happened in such a major category before and no one expected it to occur in Best Picture of all places (the only other time an envelope mixup occurred was in the 1964 Oscars ceremony where Sammy Davis Jr. was presenting 2 Best Score awards and was given the wrong envelope then; it never happened in a major category like Best Picture before this year). So for him to react the way he did was natural. I certainly would not have been able to hold myself together if such a situation occurred to me, that's for sure (the fact that he kept it together despite what was happening was admirable).

The person who gave him the card backstage gave him the backup card from the .. whatever reward it was :) That's what i heard at least.

Basically he was given the wrong card (best actress instead of best picture) which is why he didn't say anything but when he showed it to Faye dunaway she saw la la land and just thought they had won even though it said Emma stone on it too
