I remember watching this game live and how pissed I was but hearing about the Kocur story I can now look back and really enjoy it. Without Probert running around like a freight train during this game we wouldn't have gotten Kocur back and IMO wouldn't have have that extra intimidation to wint the next 2 Cups. It's a sacrificial game, if you will.
@@jimcoleman598no it didn’t lmfao funny how kocur never went with the champ twister at this point in his career lmfao he knew who to go with and who not to…

Jeremy Roenick (who had moved on to the Coyotes in '96-'97) talked after retirement about how deceptively big and strong Fedorov was, and you can see it here as Sergei refuses to let Keith Carney or Dave Chyzowski take advantage of him during scrums, stalemating (and then getting in the face of) Carney and headlocking a helpless Chyzowski.
Russian 5, just amazing. Funny, everyone says Osgood isn't a HOFer. He only has 400 plus wins and three cups because henplayed for the Wings. It's like he didn't have to make saves. Ozzie was a great goalie
4:35 You may not have liked seeing it, but you've got to admit that was a "dream match-up" between Probert* and Mac. * -- The only person I'll ever call "Probie" is NCIS Special Agent Timothy McGee.
I'm curious...do you know if there's any footage of the December 17, 2001 game? I ask because that was Bob Probert's last regular season game at Joe Louis Arena (obviously, he was a member of the Hawks).
I know Shannahan was a tough hockey player, but this game reveals it. Probert pulled his jersey over his head, tying up Brendan's arms, then landed a lot of punches cause Brendan couldn't effectively defend himself. You could see it on his face in the penalty box. But the guy didn't break stride and finished the game strong. I would've needed some Tylenol, and a 24 hour nap after that beating. Dude was tough.
Shanahan talked about this game in an interview a couple years back. Probert was getting into with Osgood and Shanahan looks around and thinks, “where’s our tough guy? Well I guess it’s me”. And then has to fight Probert lol.
Chicago thought they still had a rivalry with Detroit at this point, but they were most of the way along their journey of becoming nothing more than an irrelevant bunch of hacks for the next decade. Detroit had already moved on to very relevant Colorado being their enemy. Even pathetic Eric Weinrich thought he was a tough guy somehow here with his gutless breaking of the stick over Fedorov...until he had to watch Kocur pummel Cam Russell's face two feet in front of him on the Chicago bench a few months after this. I'll never forget him trying not to wince after each punch. Priceless...
Great announcers not like today's. Somewhat funny and not addressing each other by name every five seconds. Announce the plays more than the storyline.
God I loved Det vs Chicago as a kid. McCarty and Probert were two of my heros as a kid. I remember being so heartbroken seeing them go at it
Probie didn't relish having to fight this buddies, but Mac had to step up for the team.
Like when Bo and Luke Duke had a fight... it was hard to watch as a kid.

The late Dave Strader on the play-by-play for ESPN2 after working Red Wing games locally for over 10 seasons.
After the untimely drowning of Tom Mees they needed a replace in the booth.
And, now we see why Detroit would shortly sign Kocur.
It made a big difference too!
Absolutely, I was at this game, and I believe the first game Kocur played was a few days later in Chicago, and Kocur sent a message for sure.

Believe this is the first Red Wings broadcast where Dave Strader is calling for ESPN instead of with Mickey
You gotta love Holmer. Gets roughed up, head locked, and tackled and all he does is shrug in retaliation.
The Russian 5 were on fire here
Hockey was so much more exciting back then

Love Shannys shoulder pads.
Those nasty things held together by dried sweat
They were more like a fat lady’s bra than pads.
I'm not sure Jamie Pushor ever won a fight.
Happy birthday, Sergei Fedorov!

When ice hockey looks like a neat game...
Looks like Bob got a call from Joey to rough up the Wings.
I think Jamie Pushor's tenure with the Wings can be summed up with two words: He tried.
good ol’ ross pushor
He got nailed. But that was weak he hit him again on the ground. No need for that. I mean come on.

Ahhhh.. the good old days. Awood is the King!!
Thanks for the extra long version of this beauty of a game Awood! Was Probie coked up for this game or what??
Nah, pal Joey Kocur asked Bob for a favor, and Problie delivered.
Soviet-5!

Hartsburgh coaching the Blackhawks
Where did you find the game at? Amazon?
I wonder how long it took Shanny to get those shouldies on lol
Ледовое побоище!!!
No game misconduct for Shanny losing his jersey......
Next time they played Kocur showed Probert who was boss!!!
This game made Joey a lot of money...right out of the beer league
Real classy move to hit someone lying face down face ...
Forever screw the hawks and Chicago sports!
Homer wearing #15 is just wrong.
