  • Gabriel Conroy's final soliloquay from John Huston's film adaptation of James Joyce's short story 'The Dead'. It is the final story from Joyce's collection of short stories in 'Dubliners'.

I can't watch this dry-eyed. One of the most powerful short stories ever written in the English language, given the film adaptation which it truly deserves by a dying auteur. John Huston was breathing through an oxygen tube, sitting in a wheelchair, when he directed this film, and I can only imagine what he was feeling as he made the film. Such a powerful swan song before the end.

How can you not weep to hear this sad lamentation of a man who's forced to reevaluate himself and the world in which he plays so brief a part? The tragedy of Michael Fury pales in comparison to Gabriel's realisation of how empty his life feels in his middle age.

Haunting when I saw it back in 1987; haunting still. ❤️😢

One amazing irony is that the actor here died in real life before the actress who played his aunt.

@@guilesivann1949 that's a little excessive. Have you read "Sabbath Theatre?"
