I was 12 in 1979 I loved the name Troy so he was the first horse I ever followed I remember my dad put a £2 bet on for me if I remember jumping around like I’d won the lottery if I remember rightly I got a tenner back, a lot of money for someone my age back then.
I remember willie being asked before the race why choose troy when he he had a choice of several rides. He said that he had ridden him before and when he saw what kind of finish he had that was the one. If you watch him come round the last bend he goes into overdrive and it's spectacular. Troy was also a horse that didn't like heavy going and when he rode him in the arc de triomphe I still believe that had willie put him in overdrive just a little bit later he would have had that one too. Fabulous horse one of my all time favourites and so handsome.
The Arc always a big risk near Seasons end, many Good Horses beaten there. So takes nothing away from Troy , he was a magnificent racehorse, and Willie Carson great Jockey, He must be so strong for His Size with His relentless riding style
