Actually, circular braiding machines employ a similar mechanism, where a wedge/boat shapes guide meanders around tangential circular tracks without ever jamming. It's all about tolerances. As long as the parts are built with appropriate tolerances this process would go on for millions of cycles without ever jamming, until surface wear naturally introduces slop in the system. But that is something you have to account for in all machines and serviceable equipment.

f* bearings and lubrication. you have to put it in a cage for safety, and maintanance is a pain. you'll have that motor running 24/7, at least weakly dissassembly for cleaning, bearings check, lubrication and what not, and not to mention there are more precise, compact and simpler ways to get the same 3-level motion. PLC on two el.mag. valves leading air to two connected pistons, with end positions to be adjusted with shock absorbers and screws. maintanace: clean with compressed air 1/week, add lubricant and check shock absorbers 1/month.

I suspect it needs a 3rd arm brace. The lift occurs at near the max distance from the 2 existing brace arms. While the traveler is fairly lightly loaded, the step change occurs where the guide "wheel" is most susceptible to flexure.

I've seen things like these used to drive the movement of animatronics in our local amusement park.
I worked there for a summer and got a sneak peak when maintenance was done.

I can guess some of these but the only thing I can think of is some sorta timing system. A consistent pattern of how it rises and falls.

Gottlieb Daimler used a comparable mechanism to operate the exhaust valve on his first mobile engine, called the "Standuhr" (longcase clock).

Ground, plus 1, plus 2, ground. Next in computing? The rod could control upstream gates. Infinite complexity
