    Years ago I had a Consolidated Dutchwest XL stove with a built in catalytic converter. I miss that stove so much! It stayed with the house I sold. There is nothing like a fire in the wintertime. I also had a tee in the pipe outside so I could clean it without going up on a ladder. It makes all the difference in the world!

    Great comments Jay. We 100% heat with a wood stove. In NE PA we burn 6-7 cords of wood. We buy a tri-axle of wood logs every spring which last year was $800- and a tri-axle load is about 10-cords. I sell the 3 or so left over cords of logs to a neighbor at cost. It takes me about 15-hours per cord to, cut to size, split, and stack. I parse the time out May through July, and depending on other chores around the cabin, I have gone into August. The wood is stacked in covered areas and is stacked, first used/first cut and split to last used in like April last split. I kept records last year and between the cost of logs, gas, oil, and chain sharpening tools (Sometimes I just get lazy and bring them to a place to sharpen up) the cost is under $500- a season. Hope that may answer some questions that people might have. 73 & God Bless

    I have also heated with wood x 50 ish years. The new re-burner stoves are much more efficient than the older air tight stoves. So much that I am considering replacing mine to reduce the amount of wood I need to cut.

    Great information! 50 years ago we bought a 1,200 sq ft. well insulated electric heated house, and we couldn't afford the utility bills so we bought a 900 dollar steel wood burning stove with a manual coil thermostat on it which pulled open or closed an air damper on the bottom. We cut oak for 18" length and split to 4 to 8 inch pieces and could fill it at 9 in the evening, set the thermostat in the middle and it would heat till 8 in the morning with hot coals left in the bottom. It wasn't pretty to look at and I haven't seen anything like it since. (Low humidity messed with our sinuses so we kept a pan of water on it to get the humidity up into the 30% range) Our current house has a fireplace catalytic combustor insert in it, and it too heats really well, but have a gas furnace too, but we prefer to use wood until it gets in the teens at night.

    Jay. I'm in NY and have heated with wood for 37 of my 38 yrs on earth. Right now my single wall pipe (4in off the stove) is 100*. Its 50* outside and 73* inside. I have a vermont castings stove. It has a thermostatic damper and ash pan. Both things that make living with a wood stove way easier.

    Hey Jay, I had one identical to that one. I got very lucky with mine it was in mint condition. Only paid $200 for it. The very old couple that had it before me. The husband had alzeimers and was building a fire in the living room floor middle of the night. So the wife said, time to sell it!! I asked how much she said they pain $3800 for it 35 years ago. This was 20 years ago when. I got it. I finally so it f9r $600 after using it for all those years. It heated my 2000 Sq ft. House with no problems. She asked if I would give her $200 for it. Absolutely will ma'am!! The end

    I have always heard it pronounced Harth, like art or author, that said, I bought my wood stove also with a glass, but it has a crack, I looked into a new glass, and it was almost twice what I give for the stove, which was $75! I also used porcilen (sp) for the floor and for the wall, no air gap though, but like you said, it gets warm, but not hot. I don't live off grid, but use it because of cost of electric, or heating fuels, wood works best, except when it's not too cold. So I will use it if it's below 42* or so, yes, it gets too hot in here sometimes, esp during the day, but I just open windows or the door to cool it down. I know that I will never get cold! The draw back for my stove is it will only take a 14" piece, and if I have to buy, it's difficult to find any cut that length, most are 16-20" stock.

    Good video. I was wondering about your water needs during the winter... I'm assuming the subfloor of your cabin is insulated... If there was an insulated skirt around the perimeter (to ground) of your cabin, I wonder if there would be enough heat transfer to below the floor level to where you could have a water supply line coming up without it freezing, as long as the cabin was kept warm with the stove every day?

    • @OffgridwithJayandJen
      @OffgridwithJayandJen  4 месяца назад +1

      We have started the skirting process and had the water running in the cabin in all but January and February. It is too cold for the way I have it set up, to stay running year around, but it works well most the year

    I’m kind of a wood stove geek and burned many different types of stoves over many years and the best tip for anyone is to burn dry wood under 20% moisture content. Especially with the newer EPA stoves. They are very draft sensitive and require dry wood to burn clean. That’s a nice Classic stove you guys have there, glad it’s working out. Usually when they’re that old they require rebuilds. How does your baffle look?

    • @OffgridwithJayandJen
      @OffgridwithJayandJen  4 месяца назад

      Great point.....I have a longer more detailed wood stove video in the works....but I'm having trouble finishing it. The inside of the stove is in decent shape....but the door or internal damper flap is a bit warped......it makes it imbalanced and hard to leave in the open position

    The center of your interior 90 degree stove pipe elbow is far too low and does not meet fire code. If your homeowners insurance company finds out you will have to tear it all out and re-install to code. You should not be showing this video with improper code violation as that is dangerous and illegal install!
