I remember when I first watched this performance on channel 4. I was amazed by the music and performances and the splendour of the stage sets in Verona.
This is what I love about Ghena’s Turadot. She is imposing, stoic, icy yet passionate and has a huge voice. She doesn’t seem stressed or strained when she sings. She’s the perfect Turandot.
Unfortunately, there are very few who can truly feel it like you... She tried to overpay not 100, but 1000% in every role and sympathized with her soulfully, It's a pity that her impeccable discipline and rich soul was not understood...... And she cannot be understood by people without a soul. ...

Amazing! Love no crown. This aria is about purity. Sung magnificently here by a gorgeous soprano who brings the libretto to life. A revelation. BRAVII DIVA!

There's noone like her, and nobody ever did it that way, not Birgit Nilson, not Eva Marton - nobody. But they all belonged to a generation where ABILITY was A MUST before even touching any of these roles, not to mention step on these theatres' stage. Ghena was the best in Turandot among them all. It's good that there was her.
I was fortunate enough to be at this performance. It was truly incredible. I got to see Dimitrova sing Turandot 3 times, once here and twice at the Met in NYC.
When I listen to her all my stress goes away. Martinucci is my favorite calaf !!!!! So passionate big big voice. They are the best match up for this opera!! He is so handsome too wonderful presence and profound vocal quality!
They are both great, the soprano and the tenor (Dimitrova is always amazing and I don't understand people saying the tenor is frail, he delivers quite well). A very good production of one of my favourite scenes. Eskerrik asko!

Ah the biggest dramatic soprano I have ever heard! Resonant God given force of nature. Thanks for this!! Ah I feel relieve of all stress listening to her!
I’m a big fan of Dimitrova…. Last week I’ve been to the Sydney opera house to listen to Turandot and the dramatic soprano was ANNA-LOUISE COLE she was very good! Amazing singing and acting too!! I’m going to go in the next days a second time!!
I'm lucky enough to have seen her in this role - stunning! I also saw Gwynneth Jones too. I slightly preferred Jones (she can act!), but both were LOUD.
I mean this as a compliment. The look is very vampire horror movie, including the blueish lighting, white shroud and Crystal Gayle-length wig. Add to that the incredibly powerful vocals echoing through the theater. It’s all rather frightening in a wonderfully, ambiguously satisfying way. I suspect I’m going to have very loud nightmares after watching this.
"...ambiguously satisfying way" is probably the most poignant definition of the entire experience. She's scary as hell on so many levels and I am always surprised by Martinucci who manages to sing so confidently after being subjected to "so, straniero, ti sbianca la paura..." from such a distance :)

No good dramatic sopranos left. Everyone sucks. NO one can hit high notes. Singing in tune is a big ask these days. :( Makes me so sad. Ghena forever. This is the best recording-incredible metal in the voice. Her Lady Macbeth and Abigaille are also unsurpassed.
Sondra Radvanovsky. I have heard her live, although sadly not as Turandot. Voice wise at least the equal of Ghena. She was putting out high notes that almost had you ducking in your seat, but to no avail, because they just ricocheted off the back wall of the opera house and got you in the back of the head. @@ErnestoValt Both High C's are sung Forte... however, the Dramatic Soprano's High C however, will ALWAYS overpower a Dramatic Tenor's High C... the frequency and the output power
A bon entendeur salut!!!!
Thank you! This is exactly what I meant - Martinucci's voice, although being one of the best Calafs I have ever heard and with great presentation, is indeed not as big as Dimitrova's voice. In the recording though the 2 voices have equal volume but modern sound equipment seriously cuts his volume due to spikes in a lower register triggering feedback circuits, typical for not-really HiFi systems. I can hear his full power only through single ended tube amplifier coupled with high sensitive state-of-the-art column set.
