Hi Tim, I am new to growing fruit and I have watched loads of videos about pruning them, yours was by far the clearest and I think I know what I am doing now. Thanks a lot.
Glad you found the video useful. The best time to do the big chop is early spring for stone fruit, when the tree is heading into a strong growth phase as this will allow the tree to quickly heal the wound a put on vigorous new growth. For pome fruit (apples, pears quinces etc) a winter cut works well as it encourages strong and upright growth that will become the frame work for the new canopy.
Glad I found you! Just yesterday I removed a large portion of my Walmart purchased Belle of Georgia I planted last Spring. It had a beginning split at the junction of the lower four main branches. A spider running out of the split gave it away. By pruning two of the branches off in one cut, I only have two left. i was thinking I had killed it for sure! I now have hope.
Where did you get your gardening experience/education? Have you had trees that did well several years after topping them? How cold does it get in your area? How close is it to freezing weather do you stop pruning? Thank you for your video it has a lot of new ideas I haven't heard of before as well as many good practices that I have.
If, as I suppose, you are Down Under, I wish to ask one thing. You know where the majority of your audience is, so when you mention a month or a season, please confirm what you intend. Such as, "Winter pruning can begin around Christmas or New Years." So there you have something that translates well for the majority of English speakers, regardless of their hemisphere. Thank you for addressing vigour management. That part was new to me. Lastly, did you sharpen BOTH sides of your secateur blade? The intent is to sharpen the outside of the cutting edge only. This will help maintain the clean, smooth cuts we like. Thamks, Mate.
our peach tree is 3 years old never pruned or sprayed HELP this year there is abundance of peaches but not getting big. so we were told to to take off peaches that are closer than 2-3 inches .so we did .But since the peaches or already on the tree can we spray .or do we need to wait to spray or cut back? Thanks
I have a 3 year old peach tree that is still short and very wide. Birds picked off all the early peaches 2 years ago, and there weren't any this year. I know it needs pruning but even after watching the video I am unsure how to prune it correctly.... I don't want to cut off too much and since it's the summer I don't know if I should really prune it now or not. I got a lot of conflicting information from well-wishing friends. When I say the tree is short I mean short it is under 4 feet tall , but it's at least feet wide! Can someone help me? I need very simple instructions! Thanks!
Merryn d thanks, I will try this on my 18 month old nectarine. Last year I did this to the apricot but the salt laden winds (200 mtrs to water) seemed to burn the coast side of the tree. If this changes the rules for summer pruning please tell me quickly before I get to happy with the secatures. The video was a great help.
I did a summer prune of an apricot tree....cut a bunch of long branches off. Now the tree seems stressed...leaves are turning yellow. Should I be concerned? Is there anything that should be done to minimize the stress?
Make s cut on new growth leaving two buds within 3 weeks after bloom the remaining twovegetztive buds will grow into fruit buds that year and produce nice fruit following year
i have some question 1. how many prune should i need per year. 2. what is the best pruning time 3. which actual height should i need for all fruit trees
I live in Hawaii but my nectarines are not coming out in spring but it’s so healthy and full of leaves and absolutely no sickness at all but hardly any flowers and fruit what am I doing wrong
One of the best videos I’ve found on this subject. It gives me the confidence to tackle the huge, overgrown peach tree in our front yard. Thanks!

very helpful indeed thank you.
Do we have an answer about when to cut severely? I am assuming at the start of spring.
Thank you! very helpful information!
How do you avoid borers when pruning in the summer? My peach tree went crazy and I would love to cut it back, but I read that borers are a concern.
That's very helpful, thanks guys!

Are you in Australia?
Summer pruning will not harm the tree is from what I'm getting what your saying?
Dormant prune in spring to remove large branchs
Great video thank you, will this work for apricots also?
Yes but you need to prune immediately after you pick the fruit
This is commonly done in holland
How and when to prune avocado trees
Summer pruning later in the summer will not have this effect of generating immediate fruit buds
Thanks www.diggers.com.au. Miss not being able to just pop in
