  • Insane footage of an estimated 16-18 shark submitted by John Hyams. John and his crew were fishing the Poorman's Canyon out of Ocean City, MD when they saw what looks like a great white approach in flat calm seas. Estimated weight on a shark of this length is 1,500 to 2,000 pounds.

That is a basking shark. They look like great whites but they don't have teeth. I can see how you mistook it for a great white but it was most definitely a basking shark

The first giveaway in knowing it's a basking shark rather than a Great White is the rounded dorsal fin. Best way to tell the difference between the two from a distance. Either way it is a great day to see one close up like that.

LMAOOOOOO. That’s a Basking Shark. If you pause it right when it goes from 0:53 to 0:54, you can not only see the unusual shape of the basking shark’s head, but you can also see those gill slits that go almost all the way to the top midline of the shark’s head. Also, basking sharks have all those freckle-like spots where great whites usually don’t have those same patches along their bodies. You can also see that this shark has a much more rounded dorsal fin, where the great white’s are super sharp/triangular, and the basking shark’s dorsal fin doesn’t start right where the pectorals end, like a great white’s does. There is a bit farther back… and their back half, from the dorsal fin to the tail looks pretty skinny, where a great white’s is usually a bit bulkier, until you get to the tail fin, and then it gets a bit narrower.

@@eugenerandle3514 to a house cat a 12 year old girl could be a giant. It's about perspective. Is a 17' basking shark a giant compared to how big they can get? Perhaps not, but to some guys fishing in a 25' boat I think so. They called it a giant so I'm taking there word for it.
