It's emotional because people are there helpless and not by choice but because they were told "It's OKAY to not evacuate" thus making them think it was okay and turns out it wasn't. It's touching because man those two guys that went down there JUST to help. I hope they get paid back tenfold for their lovely help and compassion.
Angel Mendoza...It is compassion. Compassion is humanities only hope. If more people had a heart like you obviously do, there wouldnt be so many bad things going on in the world.
I'm a native Houstonian. We ALWAYS help each other. It's just how it's always been. I live now in Pittsburgh, but all my family and friends are in Houston and surrounding areas. Please pray for the people, pets and livestock of the Texas Gulf Coast. Thank you.
Houston is a huge city. They asked for volunteers to help and people came. Texans don't need to wait for government. They can help each other too.
There are many people helping Texans, who are from other states.People everywhere come together to help one another out, that is human kindness and has nothing to do with being from texas. I have seen other states and people from all across the United States and the world come together when help is needed. Good to see texans do so but texans are not special.
MegF than having Texas as part of the union truly is meaningless.... it's good that Texans aren't waiting, it's the same state that wants to secede because guns and oppressive symbols mean more to them than school and rescue funding... now the cleanup falls on the US citizens tax dollars all the way up to the northeast, ironic. I think this would be a great moment to grant that secession don't you?

This is amazing. I'm so glad that everyone is helping each other out. When our street flooded, my brother and my parents took our kayaks out and tried helping anyone they could. My mom is an RN and had extra medical supplies, so they packed it up in one of they kayaks and paddled around our neighborhood, and checked in with anyone who had stayed behind. It's good to know that the community is reaching out to help others in need. 😊
I am in Houston now and I am seeing first hand what is going on here and I can honestly say that there are no supremacists or racist in Houston this week. It has been amazing. People helping people regardless of color, religion, or nationality. Awesome.

When my relatives were hit by Katrina, the news called them "looters" in a report. They were carrying supplies to share with neighbors.

Note to reporters: stop taking up room in rescue boats. Your coverage is less important than rescuing as many as possible.

I'm in the storm just on the outside of Houston and I must tell you this brings out the kindness in us we are Texans and we will get through this.

They didn't know exactly where it would flood the most. Last time they evacuated the entire city, people died sitting on the highways trying to get out of Houston, cars ran out of gas while sitting in traffic and there was nowhere to go. Thousands were then stranded in areas that were already experiencing their own problems. There was just not enough time this go around. So far we have had only 3 deaths in Houston (only one of which has been confirmed to be directly from weather), when they evacuated 10+ people died from heat, carbon monoxide poisoning from sitting in their cars too long while running, and dehydration just trying to get out of the city.
I was there and it was aweful evacuating Houston.

Winning ThePooh you are an idiot. I was caught in it because I was in a 500 year flood plain that didn't get any water even in ike. The first rains hit 36 hours before they were supposed to and we got 12 inches between midnight and 1:30. You can't just drive away in that. Then the pumps stopped working and we ended up with 2 feet of water in the house. Anyone who points fingers at this point doesn't have a clue and maybe if YOU go through unexpected disaster someday you'll understand better. Till then SHUT UP.

I'm living in a Houston suburb. I've not slept through the night for days because of tornado and flood warnings. The local news did warn us that this storm would produce "catastrophic" and "Biblical" amounts of rain. How do you evacuate over 4 million people? Where would we go for a week? We've been living this since last Thursday/Friday. And it's not over. I just got another flash flood alert. We (our family) got a lot of food and water. We keep hurricane supplies on hand-candles and flashlights. If it got bad, we planned to leave in a camper, but we are surrounded by flooded streets now. We are lucky. Our homes are not flooded, but we were warned. It just isn't possible to evacuate one of the largest cities in this country.
Everyone has an opinion, and they assume evacuating is the best idea (which isn't). If they haven't lived through a hurricane or tropical storm, they just don't understand. I'm in NW Houston, it floods during hurricanes and tropical storms, and usually we just lift everything up as high as possible and wait it out. The water rarely comes inside our house, and sometimes our fence gets knocked down. That's not a reason to evacuate though. Houston usually averages about 50 inches of rain, and this storm has given us about 30+ inches of rain in 48 hours. No major city could have prepared for that amount of rain. Evacuating millions of people puts people into survival mode and turns them into savages. Also, people always need a scapegoat to make them selves feel better, and those watching from TV feel evacuating is as easy as packing a few items and water for a camping trip and driving away. It's not. I'd rather stay, ride it out if I can, and like a Houstonian and Texan help my neighbor if possible. Stay safe Tammy C.
This a very sad situation to go through. We have unite to help each other get help from other people. Sometimes the government takes a while before they take action. May God bless all the people who are helping as many people as they can. In tragic situations there is no difference of who you are. Everyone goes through tough situations sometimes. This why its good to get along with your neighbor because you look out for one another in the good times and the bad times.

This is why I'm proud to live in Texas and even more proud to be an American. Texas has always been a 'United across the distance' state, cause no matter what part of the state your from, no matter what beliefs you hold, A Texan always looks out for another Texan. I know that those people, who have lived here, or been born here, that they might have lost something precious these last few days, whether it be their own home, or maybe a family pet, or maybe someone they loved getting swept in the tide, but no matter what happens those Texans will push forward and persevere, because they know that you can build yourself up after you've fallen down. They will be their for their kids and their grandchildren, helping to rebuild those cities that have been stuck down. And hopefully, the Texas people will come out stronger and braver and more compassionate after this. That they know that no matter what, someone wants to save them in their time of need. That they aren't alone in this crisis. Best wishes to all the families down there. Those who have lost loved ones and precious homes, I salute you, for being brave and strong people and despite your loses, still climbing the latter and rebuilding yourself bit by bit. Thank you for your time.

Neighbors help neighbors everywhere when there is a disaster.
We always come to the rescue faster than professionals. I don't understand why we pay so much tax revenue when all we need is eachother THE PEOPLE !

They did not anticipate this kind of disaster. Brings back memories when we had typhoon ondoy in the phil. we've been there and i tell you, nobody expected such a massive volume of rain.

Why are these media types so stunned that average people are capable of picking up other people in boats? It's not earth shattering. It's not even heroic. It's just an example of the simple actions that normal decent people are capable of at any time.
it seems to me that these people are very different from the people in New Orleans when Katrina hit...these people are helping themselves and not crying for the government to help them...I wonder why the difference

i think texan are more friendly as a tourist i mean most states that seems more country and more conservative seems to be more friendly and nicer as an outsider

Everyone saw it, tried to leave at the same time, and created a traffic jam.
The issue was it wasn't called a hurricane until it was almost too late to evacuate, they kept say "Oh it's only a tropical storm". At least for Houston. We were told, "It's mainly gonna hit Corpus Christi," They said nothing about it coming back to hit Houston till we were already flooding... they said "at most Houston is only going to get an arm of the storm" This down play by news is why so many of us who would usually evacuate didn't.

Not sure what you were watching (or listening to), but here in the Midwest on cable news, they warned of huge floods and at least a Cat 3 hurricane well before landfall.
As someone who lives in Houston, they didn't say that it was going to hit Houston specifically, they kept sayin it was gonna hit mainly Corpus Christi which is why a large portion of us didn't evacuate the Houston area.
The mayer also on his twitter or the governor on twitter said "think twice before you leave your home" sorry if i missed some words

Did the mayor even evacuate neighborhoods that were in the direct route of hurricane ?
They had evacuation in Houston for Hurricane Rita and was much worse. More people died trying to leave jamming the highways. There are millions in the city. People near landfall of hurricane were given voluntary evacuation ahead of time for storm surge reasons.
City has said that if you are not in danger to wait. Stay in your homes, even if water is there doesn't mean you are in literal danger. They are saving those in most need first, which is plenty of people.

They didn't expect the hurricane to stall out on the coast and smash Houston. They expected it to hit Corpus and move on. This was a surprise to the authorities just as it was the citizens. However, someone always has to be blamed instead of everyone realizing it was a freak thing. Everyone wants to blame someone. So the authorities will be blamed even though they helped people get to safety every minute of ever hour since the storm hit.

The sad part is if this took place in California or Washington State no one would help each other for the most part . BTW I know this for a fact having spent time in California and lived in Washington State too many passive aggressive self absorbed people to help someone that needs help . In Washington State there is no sense of community in Seattle that for sure.

When I live in an area where I see a huge Hurricane on the weather radar... coming right for me, I do not need an official to tell me to leave!
What ever happened to the military that used to get called for help in emergencies or THE RED CROSS. So the state is BASICALLY UNPREPARED.

The national guard can't even help themselves. Civilians are doing most of the work
They're going to need a lot of pumps to get rid of all that water flooding Houston. They could also save some of the water to be put in buckets before Houston gets a serious heat wave again. Also to use it to put in the cars' engines to keep them from overheating.

We can see these coming days ahead of time, I think we need more government help moving these people before the storm hits. But of course we just let it flood with a bunch of stranded people and now have to pay more to save the people who could've been in a different state if we didn't just sit around and wait for it to hit.
My house hasn't flooded yet I'm one of the lucky ones but if my house floods and we need to leave i have so many pets I can't take them all with me all of them are as high off the ground as i could get them
