I'm in zone 7 on Vancouver Island in Campbell River. I start my sweet peas inside Feb 1st from seeds. I start hardening off about 3 weeks later and one week after that I plant outside along a concrete fence, each next to a 1x1 stick with a $1 store plastic dome slid down the stick. We are windy and rainy in March so this helps them from getting bashed around. On sunny days I lift the dome a couple of feet were it stays put on the sticks (the domes each have a 1" hole on top. Not much growth for at least a month but they are blooming by May 15th and keep blooming until Sept at least, I stopped cutting all the blooms then so as to collect seed pods. I have two rows of dahlias in front of then and the fence behind so they are protected from wind and summer heat.
My sweet peas never do anything until August and then sometimes they’ll keep on until almost November! Always baffled me that they were considered a “spring” flower. North/central AB.
When you talk about 'Bells of Ireland' I get the shivers (I've lived in Ireland 🇮🇪 for 30 years). We can't get Bells of Ireland here! How ironic is that?
I’m in zone 6 b .. and I give up on sweet peas. The first year I started them early in doors . They never bloomed. Last year I sowed then outside and they bloomed but were not great. And they were covered in aphids. There’s easier flowers to grow.
Good to see you, Kristen. You’re not looking so tired in this video. Hope your settling in to your new house. Looking forward to spring here in zone 6 New England.
We’re finally somewhat settled into the acreage now, so I’m not so ridiculously exhausted. Although those toddlers still have some seriously awful nights.
@@ShiftingRoots So sorry to hear the toddlers are having a hard time. Is it the sounds of the country? I don’t know what you have for wildlife where you are, but where I grew up we had whippoorwills and owls. Some of my friends who would stay over found them scary. Have you tried music while they sleep? Maybe even a recording of you playing the piano. There are some sites that have several hours of soothing music. I have a lot of problems sleeping in my elder years and I am currently trying meditations to go to sleep. I haven’t tried any of the just music recordings yet, but I may. I have used a noise machine for years, which helped a lot. I seem to need more than that now. The furnace noises and even the wind probably sound very different to them. It is so hard to explain things to children of that age and hard for them to articulate just what’s troubling them. I hope they feel comfortable there soon so you can all get some good rest.
When I grew sweet peas direct sowed they would start blooming end of June if in a shady spot, if in almost full sun end of July, best performance August through September. Zone 3, Saskatchewan
Is the middle of March a good time to start seeds for Snap Dragons in zone 3 ? The seeds were saved last Fall from plants purchased at a local greenhouse in Spring. Really enjoy learning from you.Thank you for your videos Kristen.
Do you have a video of your new property? About the mice, I watched a video where an older farmer claims that ready made mix for cornmeal muffins mixed with equal parts of backing soda did wonderfully for him, both for mice and rats. Since it is safe for us, in case kids take it, it might be worth trying.
I would like to if you clarified the seeds you are speaking about for your region because many you mentioned can be direct sown in my zone 5a without a hitch. Thank you
I'm in zone 3 I started my sweet peas inside and they started out well blooming thru may and June but the fizzled out. I thought maybe because they got too hot? I'm really not sure. I'm going to try to direct seed this year
I heard that don't like heat. I germinated mine recently and then sowed them in toilet paper rolls made into cups because they don't like the roots disturbed. I can just place in the ground. Newbie here! I live in zone 8b north central Florida. It gets hot fast so I'm going to see how much this process helps me! Good luck!
Hey :) I can't help but notice the new background, so you finally moved?? If you ever have time and need inspiration, do you think you could do a video about flowers to use in beauty products that we can start from seeds? It would help me a lot when the time comes to planing our gardens. Have a nice day keep up the good work!
Yes! We finally made the move officially last week! That’s a good idea-I don’t know if I’ll make a video, but I will definitely write a blog post on that.

Nice colors of the flowers🌼🌻🌺🏵🌹🌷
I'm from Winnipeg and I want to grow flowers for my sister's wedding. I'm super excited to have found your channel!
Best of luck!! When’s her wedding?

Hi! Just found your channel. This is so helpful! I love the winter sowing method and plan on doing a few of these flowers this way. I'm in zone 6b.
Love this list I never seem to have any luck with sweet peas; gonna try direct sowing. 😊
Even with soaking and direct sowing I don’t have the greatest luck, but I got a decent amount this year.
I've started sweetpeas from seed for the first time, so exited to see how they get on.

Thank you for this! I will try some in a shadier spot then.
I am in zone 5a and double clicks grow like crazy.
Oh I wish!! Maybe they’ll like the acreage soil better and seed themselves here.

Yes, I think the middle of March is around week 10, which is perfect for snaps.
I want to try the milk carten this year!
You should! It's really easy, although you do need to water it in the spring.

Likely. It was so hot last year and they don’t like the cold. I got some probably only because they were in a slightly shaded spot.
