The way the Japanese culture acts like mild criticisms are deathly insulting is so weird to be. Like lying about bad cooking. Criticisms are vital towards improvement!! Fail to do that and you’ll fail at so much more.. Grow some thicker skin, and stop acting like being told the truth is an insult.
It is about politeness. Politeness is a cardinal virtue in Japanese culture. Dropping formalities is in fact a sign of closeness so it can be very insulting if such implied closeness is not earned. Thus direct speech is a tad bit hard to accomplish in an open setting. Especially when the people speaking have different social standings.
