The tiny creatures which freaked you out are possibly the larvae of a species of hoverfly. Hoverflies are good pollinators, there are several species. Be not afraid, live and let live.
Ah ha yes! After doing a google of the horverflies I’ve found that it’s actually the larvae of a drone fly, but they seem closely related. I think the larvae are also called rat tailed maggots, bit gross. That’s for cracking that one for us!
