That was called "combat backpack", it was supposed to be small and light. One pouch is for that square Yugoslav mess box/canteen. Other pouch was for loaf of bread or daily ration. Remaining room inside was for ammo and small gear like gloves or spare socks. Straps on the bottom are supposed to hold folded tarp "плашт палатка". All in all, it was good backpack to bring on a day or two combat mission. For YNA that was most that soldier would go without support, Yugoslav national army was strictly defense force, relying on good logistics and territorial defense that was networked into every village inside what use to be Yugoslavia. That is one of the reasons conflict in the 90s was so damn bloody, everybody had easy access to local army barracks, territorial defense warehouses and after serving in the army, when joining reserve force, most people would have complete combat gear bar rifle and ammo issued to take home.
He was kind, but the backpack still sucks :) Fun fact: at least in Slovenia these backpacks were quite common "cool kid" school backpack in the 90's. Also, Slovenia made its version from cordura in old SLO oak leaf camo. It was ment as an assault pack but also used as mention as NBC or first aid.
I got one year's ago. It's a great side satchel. Take off both straps and use just one that goes over the head and left shoulder and the bag to the right hip.
I was using one of those as a backpack for school 😄 My dad brought me many useful things from work (military), like this backpack, socks, underpants, boots... I also got rides in tam 110, pinzgauer, Antonov An-26, Mil mi-8... Fun times
Cool video! I actually have that same Serbian bag. I agree it's a bad backpack, but it's a good little haversack/breadbag if you reconfigure the shoulder strap. I actually was hiking with it and a very overloaded LK35 and it saved me. Frayed threading on one of the LK35 shoulder straps caused it to rip. I managed to use the Serbian shoulder strap on the LK35 frame as a temporary fix. I'll always remember the Serbian pack for that lol. -Leen Visser
I always enjoy watching your videos and reading the comments from people who have more information about the items they certainly taught me why the backpack is designed as it is and it’s utility ❤🎉❤😊
I actually really like mine as a daypack for hunting and fishing. Enough room for some snacks and a meal or two, a rope to drag out a deer, toilet paper, sanitizer, a thermos of coffee, spare wool cap and gloves, and a rolled up poncho underneath. I 'could' overnight with it, but thats as much as i'd want to do. Still, for a day trip, its handy.
Bad backpacck 🤣No, it is very good peace of equipment it is called ''battle/combat pack'' and it is very functional. You would be surprised how practical it is if I show you how we used it. For hiking it is nothing special but for war this is still my favorite.
Maybe you like it brother, but it's not a good pack :) If I want a good old-school pack, I use the Russian "Veshmeshok." At least things can't fall out of the pack if it's not fully packed :)
@@SurvivalRussia Bro at 2.26min you showed how it can not fall out because that compartment covers what is inside of the pack. It is ment to be tightened everything and you atach straps to the belt also where you put tent shelter. You basicly carry just ammo and food inside and infront just spare socks, soap, small things. It is more part of your belt system than clasic backpack. Compare it size with small bag on the back of russian sso smersh kit and you will see what I mean. Also dont forget that we use 7.62 ammo in our AKs. I like it for what it is, battle proven simple combat pack, nothing more.
@@SurvivalRussia You are wrong, I grew up wearing that backpack, but only later in the army learned its full purpose. Backpack is really practical for what its intended for and when you know how to use it. Except for balaclava and gloves, non of that stuff you showed is a standard equipment for this back pack. It is meant to carry ration, one bread, bottle and cutlery and personal decontamination equipment. Helmet was mounted on the top back, and tent wing on the bottom. When properly equipped, it can be used to drag the wounded from the battlefield. For couriers it can be carried over the shoulder as a side bag. It has much more functions then the standard Russian veshmeshok.

At first I thought it was a large buttpack. My shoulders hurt from simply thinking about wearing it. Still, you made do with it...which is a pretty good description of soldiering.😎 VERY interesting! Those camo suits look like they would make a great alpine combination! Is the camo suit reversable with a white inside??
I use this backpack in '91 and '92 during the covil war in ex Yugoslavia, and i absolutely hate this "piece of equipment" in ex Yugoslav people armies....Sturdy material, but to small, exept for 24 hours ration pack, with mes kit....This snow and camo pattern stuff are using mostly mountainers and scouts,i have also this camo "pyjamas",as we call this rags... @@SurvivalRussia I've been watching you for many years..(changed name ) and it's only since the Ukrainian conflict that I've not been seeing your videos...😏🤔
I just realized I hadn't been getting SR notifications for a while despite being a sub for years. YT obviously not promoting your videos for political reasons. How frustrating.
Yeep, the backpack quality and design was bad, but the boots were even worse. Possibly the worst Yugo army item ever, the M77 boot. As child, I've heard many older people whining about bad boots, bloody feet, conscripts taking them off and pouring the blood out of them like it was a cup, this and that and I didn't believe them. Fast forward a couple of years, I was a piss poor uni student visiting a buddy in Southern Serbia. He took me to a flea market and I found this m77 model for like 8 bucks. It seemed like a great deal, boots that'd last forever. lol... I still have the scars on the back of my heels, multiple layers of skin being peeled off from the horrible craftsmanship quality, seams that I have no idea who decided to put there. There are bumps there (at the back of my heels) that my friends don't have, probably from the tissue healing in a weird way. I spent like 20 bucks trying to fix them by taking them to a cobbler, but they still sucked. I understand they had a horrible experience in ww2 with finding boots of any kind while guerilla fighting through the war and people losing their feet and this and that, but come on... Just trying to pump out as many boots as possible for the reserves to be filled to the top with boots that would outlast the owners. Horrible. After somehow surviving a winter in those, I bought a used pair of Haix boots for 30 bucks, and they are the best boots I've ever had! The only good Yugo boot was the Alpine model given to the border guards on the now Slovenian Alps (also the officer boots, but those were rare).
Well, I had M77 boots for one year in the army in 1999 and I had no problem in baracks nor on battlefields and I never heard of bloody feet and I met a lot of soldiers... We have one saying in serbian I will try to translate it because it explains the mindset of this kid - For small dick even one hair is the problem.
I also had peeling skin on my heels and Achilles tendon when I put on new boots and immediately went on a 13km march. Later they showed me tricks. New boots should always be well stepped on to soften the rear part, and thick socks must be worn. That does the trick.

I remember seeing the white oversuits during the winter in Bosnia back in the 90's very effective for such a simple item.
A great old style bag/shoulder bag/haversack, canvas, leather.....A good option for hunting or short trips!
Awesome thanks 👍👍👍👍

reminds me of some german NVA packs, different camo though.
That was pretty cool. Takes you back doesn't it? It's interesting what they used back then compared to today. Thanks for sharing it with us Lars
Neat stuff Lars, maybe that pack, is what is termed a rucksack. I have an old NATO canvas rucksack. Better than that one.
