    thank you. I was finally at the level where this makes sense and it is AWESOME to be able to do this. Now i have implemented it, but when i first watched this video as a noob, my brain broke. now i have a much better sense of HA and loving google calendar integration and utility. NOTE there are some changes with recent HA/integration updates- no more configuration.yaml code segment needed.

    Great video. Since you made it, I think the integration has been updated, as all of the configuration of the calendar is now done through the Integration itself (no YAML) and the documentation states that the use of the google_calendars.yaml file is deprecated and not recommended as it is incompatible with other HA features. The Google Calendar documentation also mentions the limitation on the calendar attributes being limited to one event, and states that Calendar Automations should be used instead. Would be great if you could provide an updated video on the new approach, which sounds more flexible.

    Hi Jeff, first of all: Thanks for your great Videos.
    I've followed your guide about two thirds through the video before facing a problem which appears to be quite new:
    I'm missing the google_calendars.yaml
    After some research i've found out, that this affects everyone who's installing the google calendar integration after 2022.6. On the integration page it states:
    "The integration supports additional configuration from a file google_calendars.yaml which is available for existing users before version 2022.06. This file is no longer automatically populated."
    Do you know a clean and easy suggestion on how to populate this file? Or plans on releasing an update to this video?

Having already taken a very quick look at the official integration page, I could tell the most difficult part was going to be the Google credentials, rolled my eyes and just put this off. This video is really well timed and well explained as always.
    I made a Siri shortcut that triggers a Home Assistant script with whatever text is said and Home Assistant then performs actions based on the text content. I've been thinking about expanding it to allow scripts to be scheduled in Home Assistant. For example, I could schedule a whole home TTS announcement with dynamic text. Using Google Calendar would help track the time for the trigger with the contents holding the information about the action.

    Thank you, Jeff for all your videos! I'm learning a lot from you. I am looking forward to implementing this calendar integration and expanding the capabilities of my automations. I was curious about your thoughts on using the CalDav integration with iCloud or a Synology Caldav calendar. I would be interested in those mainly for keeping it local (with Synology) and keeping it private (with both). Do you know of any trade offs for using one of those instead of Google? Any thoughts on privacy concerns with Google calendar?

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  2 года назад +1

      I’m not sure there would be any real trade offs. I have read a lot of people having issues trying to get caldev to work though. But I haven’t tried. In Theory I think it should work fine. I don’t have any real privacy concerns with the calendars. That said. I wish home assistant had an easy way to sync a local one. If I could keep it local I would go that route. The google calendar was just easier. my biggest issue it’s needs to be easily accessible and updatable with everyone in the house using it when I went down that path.

    I had a problem that I could only solve with python involving having multiple birthdays on the same day (Me and my great niece). I couldn't find any other solution but the python solution works okay. I can probably refactor it but I wasn't sure if your viewers might have run into that problem with the existing google calendar integration; in general it only reports the 'next' event and since I had two birthdays there wasn't a convenient way to render two events that I could come up with. My solution will work for multiple birthday events (Tom, Dick and Harry for instance) but just a heads up in case anyone else ran into this. As always, I love your channel!

    Great video Jeff, like all of them. I have seen the video now a lot of times. Im not so good in the yaml typing but I do my best. And what you are mentioning in your video is my struggle at the moment. I have a automation that is triggering just fine, The normal appointments. But it hangs on the appointments that is taking all day. When my wife has a day off, we manage taht all in the calender, but it doenst trigger at the all_day. It would but then it triggers all events of all_day. It seems I can trigger a all_day with a summary / description of 'wiafe day off' And also the thing that if there is a event of all_day, then all other events can´t be triggerd anymore, because it stucks on the all_day event. As you mentioned. But your solution isn´t possible I think since the new integration. So I am looking forward to maybe a new video about how to handle this all nowerdays. Thanks Jeff, I keep watching.

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  2 года назад +1

      Ah don’t worry. That offset thing confused the heck out of me at the beginning. Think of it as that “remind me before” option on a calendar event. The offset gives you a way to do that in home assistant. So for an event starting at 2pm if you put !!-00:10 in the title. In home assistant that off set reached attribute will turn true 10 mins earlier at 1:50pm. If you put !!-05:00 in the title then that offset attribute for that event will turn true 5 hours prior at 9am. So for that last example at 9am the calendar entity will still show off. But the offset reached attribute will be true. So you would be able to kick off an automation related to that event prior to the actual event start time. Once the event start time is reached the calendar entity will turn on. Does that help?

    Is the main advantage that HA has a big set of notification options? Google calendar can already send email, but cannot tweet. Are there useful ways to combine this with state? For example, trigger a calendar based notification when someone gets home

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  2 года назад +1

      Not at all the big advantage is you can pull all this data in and combine it. And yes. Most of what I use the calendar for is notifications. Because when I’m home I’d rather Jarvis just tell me when it’s time to leave or what is on the calendar than finding my phone and getting that data. And yea you could totally combine this data with your presence detection data to do anything. Heck you could put your weekly Amazon prime day and have HA gather up all your smart home tech batteries that are almost dead and send you a list of what you should order. The beauty is once that calendar data is in home assistant you can combine it with any of the other data and make some really smart automations.

      I use the sun integration. At least for triggering a handful of automations. In general configuration page under settings you can set the latitude and longitude of your house along with the elevation. I believe that is how it knows where the sun is in location to your house. And yes you could get gps data into home assistant. Phones for example send their gps location data to home assistant. If you wanted to use 3rd party gps data for sun state though you have to come up with your own sensor. I have seen one that allows that. Then again I have honestly not looked.

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  2 года назад

      It’s a home assistant thing. The integration will search for what ever you put in that search field. Since I’m using words that might show up in a normal event description the # allows the integration to be intentional about what it’s looking for. But you could just as easily leave it off and for example look for any events that have “party” in them. Then you wouldn’t need to add something specific for the search.

    If you jump into node-red you will be able to do many things much easier. I suggest running it stand-alone rather than as an add-on. If an add-on node-red restarts every time you restart HA and if you are using it to control things outside of HA that becomes really annoying. Also, you can run multiple instances on different ports if you have independent projects and source control them with git. I highly recommend node-red. Of course, I am probably biased since I used to be a NodeJS developer.

For example, I created one for "Work Early" when I need to log in to work at 7am instead of the normal 8am. It also caught the "Test early work alarm" event I used to see if it would schedule my alarm clock at the appropriate time since I had a "Work Early" even the next day. When I reboot Home Assistant, that calendar.yaml file re-generates and pulls back in all the calendars I tried to hide.....
    Any idea how to do that? I want to completely hide calendars from the side, not just disable them

      Oh, maybe I'm good...
      I had to refresh my browser. Looks like it's now updated and hidden. For anyone that may come along after me, within google_calendars.yaml, for the ones you want to hide, change their track parameter to FALSE. Restart Home Assistant, and refresh that calendar pane after reboot a few times.

      I was thinking False should cover it. I know if you comment it out it may just come back.

    With the changes in the newer versions, how does one actually search doing the configuration through the UI? I can get it to fire, but only if it matches exactly. My use case is that I would like Alexa to speak the days calendar entries. (thought was to put #Alexa somewhere in the description whenever I wanted the entry to be spoken)

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  Год назад

      You would need to setup the google calendar yaml file. With that you can define search parameters.

    Time to update this video. The integration does not use the google_calendars.yaml file anymore. So now I am stuck trying to figure out how to separate out the individual events for each day.

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  2 года назад +1

      My understanding is it still can use then calendars.yaml it just doesn’t create it for you so you are on your own for building it. In the docs it is listed as an advance setup and hidden behind some clicks so I suspect they are trying to get away from it. The easiest method would would be to create separate calendars. I started working on a. New video though.

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  Год назад

      Yes. Use google_calendars.yaml. It still works. It just doesn’t get auto created. But it still works. The only change was they moved google_calendars.yaml to the “advance” option. But I verified it still works. I’ll be doing a new video on how to do it. If you need one to reference I can link to my on GitHub

      That would point to an indention error somewhere. Everything in secrets should be start without indention. For example, if I put three spaces in front of line 5 in secrets I get the same error.

    Still waiting for a user friendly way to integrate Google Calendars. Everything I've seen expects you to be messing around a lot with YAML or learning Node Red

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  2 года назад

      For sure to enable it you have to get into the yaml to add the google section. But for basic use as long as your calendars are already setup those three lines are all you need. After that when you restart your calendars will be in home assistant. Hopefully that part will get added to the UI flow this year.

    How to create own calendar, no Google, no iOs etc?

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  2 года назад

      I think the only option that I know of is an entities Calendar integration in the home Assistant Community store. That allows you to create a calendar using entities like datetime helpers. I played around with it a while back to see if it would work for chores. But there really isn't a way to create a calendar inside of home assistant. If you have a local ical based calendar I believe those can integrate using the CalDAV integration.
