      I have to travel to Copenhagen for work often. The people on the bicycles look miserable. I really enjoy to ride bicycles for fun and sometimes transportation. Government taxing more on things you they dont like is a dangerous thing.

    According to my understanding of Danish history, it was a 150% luxury tax from when the first cars came to Denmark, and it has never been removed. The same with the 25% VAT which was supposed to be temporary.
    Problematically only in Copenhagen is there great public transport with the new Metro, in Odense there's only slow bus transport in a few spots. Making car a necessity unless you live very close to the metropolitan area.

      even if you want to opt in for the public transport it's rather expensive. holbæk-århus train costs 900kr both ways and that is €120 for a mere 260*2 km. also it takes longer than a car to traverse the same route (no shinkansen in denmark 🫠) if you also need to connect to bus to reach your final destination than it takes even more time. not super convenient either.

    cycling and taking the public transportation is nice and all but it only works for large cities like copenhagen or århus. outside the large cities car ownership is much more common. draconian car taxes force people to buy older or lower model cars. so people still buy cars and the car ownership actually does not go down like the danish state fantasizes. i live in a town in sjælland and i can't even get a taxi to catch an early morning train.

      Exactly! I’ve lived in Jutland and it was the same . Non existent public transportation system . It seems that the borders of Denmark are around Copenhagen cause the rest of the towns cities and villages are not important and thus not part of Denmark according to the government.

    People can complain about the registration tax. I live in australia, you have to pay registration fees every year, which on average is 1000$ a year, meaning over a span of an adult life of 60 years, and changing cars every 10 years, itll cost you around 80,000$, we dont have great public transportation and our infrastructure is car centric, every household has like a minimum of 2 cars, since thats the only way of getting around

    I could accept that ridicolous taxation if public trasportation and taxis were cheap and well developed. However its expensive as F and excluding major cities its very poorly developed. I live in a city of 55.000. with public transport it takes me 2,5 hours to work but with car only 30 minutes.

    Well the need for reduction of emissions is very questionable (it is more of a fantasy in peoples minds rather than a real benefit society) and most importantly these changes are FORCED upon people (i.e. not a free society) and in a country like Denmark which is super cold, windy and rainy (for like 10 months)...it doesn't make any sense to force these type of transportation on people. If we were in Spain I would somehow understand...but this is just very traumatic and annoying overall in a country like Denmark where people are getting sick all the time because of the weather too. I think you've seen the very small good side that is not even a good side but a sacrifice for nothing as I just explained :D

    Hej Mario! Thanks for a very good decription on why the taxes is so high at cars. I've lived here for 62 years in Copenhagen, and can say that today, it's a much nicer city than 40 years ago. I have never had a driver licens, but always a bicycle. And nice to see that you and your family still are living here, though I was a 'little' tough on you earlier, around the money making😉🤫 Now I live very near by Trianglen, and very cheep in an Andels apartment. Can recommend you this way of living.

      Let it be said I would prefer it wasn’t so high tax but I really wasn’t aware of the insane amount of moneys it collects for skat

    Another good video with a lot of important insight.
    But I do not believe you when you say at 6:06 that your family basically spends zero on transportation: You own a cargo bike. It is not taxed extremely high like cars are, but it is not cheap either. And insurance on such a bike is not cheap either, in particular in the Copenhagen area. Owning a bike is often easier than owning a car in the large cities here, and it is a lot cheaper than owning a car. But the price is not zero.

      Thanks! But once you actually paid for the bike your only cost is the insurance, which if you divide by two is very low and also comes as a package with other things in the indbo

      @@MarioScianHQ Yes, once you have paid for the bike the only costs are maintenance and insurance. But personally I prefer to amortize the upfront cost of large expenditures over the expected lifetime of the asset purchased, as this gives me a better idea of the real cost of the asset.

    When you look at the GDP per capita of Denmark and the one of the Netherlands is almost the same. Now tell me how is Denmark’s infrastructure better than the Dutch one ? I’m not going to go further comparing cause it would be pointless. Just don’t try to justify this nonsense cause there’s no way you can justify this. Additionally the public transportation system is not the best in Denmark unless you think Copenhagen = Denmark. Now go to the Netherlands and check that you can go to the toilet with the tram or train 😅. The roads of the Netherlands probably the best in Europe , as if you’re in an F1 track. Is education or health system better in Denmark? No . We could argue for hours about this but in reality it is just a woke agenda about “green” and all that . Denmark survives only cause of the taxes of people and does not find any alternatives.

    A typical EV like the Tesla Model Y only costs roughly 25% more in Denmark than in the US, equivalent to the 25% VAT.

      The EV taxes are different yes but the more expensive models are taxed quite high too

      @@virtual-vikingthe point is that 0 emission vehicles all have a 500.000kr deductible from these taxes. This means that for Model 3 and Model Y and all other cars of lesser than 500.000kr value, there is no registration tax applied. As you say, only 25% VAT

      @@denisdrga6709 I think the limit is closer to 450.000 dkk. But in any case, it's enough to make it a no brainer to get an EV.

    I'd rather rent a car when needed
