- In this sewing video, I'm sewing a 1950s vintage sewing pattern to create a vintage-inspired dress to wear to a fashion event full of infulencers, content creators and fashionistas. I'm excited to share the process, where I learn to embrace my personal style. How to Dress sophisticated and not feel the need to give in to fashion trends. How to dress to impress, myself.
We also talk about the book "The Lost Art of Dress" which is linked

I really like your outfit, and you added to the luxury with high-end accessories to show the others that you can be vintage AND modern and expensive looking. Like another poster, I love dressing in me-made vintage and having people ask if I'm dressed up for a party or cosplay and telling them "no, this is just how I dress." It's even better to tell them I made it! I love feeling dress up and authentically me.
Thank you so much! I can’t wait to share the photos! Today was so fun! And thank you for being my first channel member!!! Your support means so much to me ♥️♥️♥️
I am so glad you have resumed reading The Lost Art of Dress as I asked. Indeed, women back then were to dress to look and feel good by finding shapes, colors, styles that flatter and not become that flash people notice but rather people should notice you. Your beautiful face. They were so economical, skilled, practical and yet artistic all at the same time. There were so many sewing groups. I wish there was that interest in garment making at the community level.
Your dress and cape look lovely. Look forward to seeing the pics.
Hey Drew, I love being me in all my handmade creations and feeling special in all the things I wear. Some people think I am over dressed with wearing a vintage dress and cardigan with gloves. I suppose living in CA, folks are very urban casual and I stick out in those environs. I love wool crepe but it's hard to find now. I could find it in zillions of different colors in the 90s, not so much now. One sewing instructor gave me a great hint about giving thin wools some weight without the bulk by interfacing the pieces with iron-on tricot interfacing. I'm a slip girlie but the tricot made the fabric have soft drape and stability. The wool cashmere fabric you have would probably do really well with tricot interfacing the pieces. I don't know why I told that story. Anywhoo, from one sewist to another enjoy your trip to NOLA you are going to look FABULOUS in your latest creation. Well, I'm starting a new vintage pattern (Anne Adams) I got from Stephanie Canada. I'm getting ready for Spring sewing.
Thank you for the tip, I’ll have to try interfacing with tricot next time! And thank you for sharing I love learning about you all too ♥️
Your perseverance paid off, the final look is so lovely ♥️
I think your entire outfit came together wonderfully. I totally understand the feeling of wanting to show up authentically as yourself while also wanting to fit in in a me made outfit. Over the last year I’ve been attending events( concerts etc) in me made vintage outfits that are clearly more eccentric/fancy than what most people are wearing. I tend to get nervous as I walk up to the venue but I’ve never been greeted by anything other than multiple compliments on my outfits. I end up feeling happy that I have been true to myself and have nice pictures of what I’ve made.
Stunning dress! I have some camel/oatmeal cashmere fabric and now I'm inspired!
She looks classy with or without the accessories
My word. I do the stanky leg when my seams line up, it’s a real celebration! The dress is lovely and timeless.
Yasssss!!!
I think you have a very elegant vib with your style. And I think this is a gorgeous dress and cape. You will be wearing this all the time. It's such a classic and also a little funky in the best way possible. You'll look absolutely stunning.
You're so sweet, thank you!! I'm going to wear this every chance I get!
Dressing to impress yourself is the best way to go. Because when you do that you feel better about yourself and your work. And other people will see that too. I'm glad you went with the cashmere and brown accessories. The outfit is very sophisticate in its simplicity.
Thank you very much!
Your choices fit and look beautiful. They show your style, they show you. Thank you for granting us a look into your life. It is such a a pleasure to walk along this journey with you ❤
That is so sweet of you to say! I am loving being able to share this journey with you! I’m excited to have true supporters really cheering me on!
Totally get the dress to impress yourself! It's.a lot of work to make your own clothes, and the effort is wasted if there isn't something you love about what you make.
Yes, yes, yes!!! THIS looks like you! I started sewing because I couldn't find in stores what was in my head & it was hard finding modest skirts & dresses for my daughter & myself. It opened a whole new world to my wardrobe. So anything I make & wear, I'm super proud of. We're our own worst critics & it's easy to hold ourselves to higher standards when creating for ourselves. You did good, hun! Better than good! I can't wait to see the vlog off your trip. Please be safe out there!
Yay! It looks beautiful! So excited for the vlog 🎉 I also feel like I’ve had to learn through my many “fails” that before I can reach my goals, there will often be a point of struggle. Not giving up is how we learn, even though it doesn’t always feel all that great at the time!
Sometimes I find it hard to strike a balance between the goals I set for myself (like creating a dress for an event because I really want to wear something I made-Probably too much pressure sometimes because that’s what others expect of me!) and making things from a place of loving to create and taking the time to do things well. Last event I made 3 muslins before giving up and doing something else, but it totally worked out in the end-you gotta follow your instincts! I think this is a super glam look-you’re going to have so much fun!
Thank you! You are so right, sometimes we have to step back and rethink the whole thing!
It looked fancy shmancy without any accessories. The accessories are just the icing on the cake.
I totally get what you mean about “fitting in”. I, in the past have made clothes from 900 AD to Elizabethan. For me though, I am very anal about making everything from my shoes to my head gear looking completely historically accurate. Sometimes my family have wanted to move out. Which is why for me, vintage will only be very late 50’s to all of the 60’s. It fits my rectangular body better. I will become a member soon but, I only use Suga Kookie online due to weird interactions in the past. That is super cute…
I would love to see more pics of your work!!
Hi Drew! This is my first time ever commenting, but I’ve been watching your content for several months now. I absolutely love how you merge vintage fashion with modern flare and you have inspired me soooo much! You showed me exactly what I had been looking for without me knowing it until I saw you. I’m still a beginner at sewing but you give me hope that the projects I desire to complete are possible. Continue being a bright light and an inspiration! May everything your hands touch be prosperous and may God bless you beyond measure!!
Hi!!!! I am so happy you found your way to sewing and to my channel. Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate them. I hope that you complete your dream project but more than that I hope you really enjoy the process of learning to sew. It has forced me to slow down, it quiets the noise in my brain it has taught me so much about myself and brought me community. I hope it brings you the same. Keep in touch! Let me know how it's going. ❤️ Drew
My dear Drew, you ARE the high quality event! Always!😊
I love how the outfit came together with determination and your developing embrace of your personal style.
For the cape button, what if you made it like a cuff link/French cuff type situation, so the buttons are removable and interchangeable? That would be very retro, like how ladies wore fabulous brooches.
Either of those garments contrasted with a rich burgundy would be another posh look. You have created two truly timeless statement pieces!
I struggle with dressing to impress myself. I love to create but wearing my creation is an entirely different story. I may give that book a read. Thanks for sharing ❤
Looks 100% better than the orange dress
Agreed!!!
Very nice, great outfit. Enjoy your time in New Orleans and Valentine's Day!
Beautiful. Such a tease, can't wait to see how it looks on you.
Ahhh!!! I love it! Just beautiful and elegant and timeless!!!
Beautiful dress and the cape just makes the outfit sooooo chic! Enjoy your trip.
I am so glad you like it! I am so happy with it!! I’m looking forward to wearing it tomorrow!!
We’ve got such different styles. I’m plus size and love colour, texture and volume. I love your videos though and have watched all since I found you (maybe not all the shorts though). You inspire me and I love your calm voice and demeanour 😍
Thank you for watching I’m glad you enjoy! 😊
I love this one it's very beautiful ❤
Its a gorgeous dress, and the matching cape is the icing on the cake! I'm slightly dissappointed you didn't go for the gold button because I thought you liked that one better but that may be my own preference speaking.
For some reason RUclips is being annoying and I did not get a notification for the live :(. Hope to be there next time!
I think I did like the gold one better!! I wish it have of been shaped a little differently.
It's gorgeous!
Safe travels and have fun❤
Thank you so much!
When all else fails try tailors tacks.
This all looks amazing!
I’m so glad you think so! 😊
Beautiful 😍
Thank you! 😊
As far as leaving a gap for turning, wouldn't it be easier to do that on a side seam rather than a curved edge?
Probably!!! I will remember that next time! Thank you 😊
That light brown colour has a very rich and expensive look
🌅🎁👗🫅💐
Doing better than I could. Not saying much on me I suck at sewing 🪡🧵
I have my days!! It gets easier as you go.
