The RUclips algorithm has failed. I've searched traditional Japanese music on RUclips for years, and only now have I stumbled upon the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard.

I agree. Often, all I could find are old, tinny-sounding pieces where the koto sounds atrocious. Thank goodness I had a high-quality CD by Ensemble Nipponia to prove to myself I was mishearing it. I still prefer shamisen and biwa to koto, but recordings like this do help me understand the instrument's appeal better. And there no midi-quality Western strings or "calming" chimes in the background, which is a plus.

I'm watching an anime called *Kono Oto Tomare* which is about a high school koto club. It's super interesting, especially for musicians. It also shows interiors which range from a super-cheap efficiency flat to an ultra-modern luxury condo, as well as traditional architecture and what I suppose might be called transitional styles. I had one of those "Well, duh..." moments last night when I realized how danged much space Japanese-style sliding doors save. How'd your exam go? Two questions (actually, I have a lot more, but...): 1 -- How long did you live there, you lucky thing? 2 -- Have you seen the anime series *Koto Oto Tomare* yet? It's about a high school koto club, and it's a marvelous learning experience. I play Medieval and Renaissance music (recorder), so the similarities (backbeats, syncopation, interweaving of melodic lines) are striking, while the differences (tuning, melodic intervals) make the sound almost alien at first. Very deep anx mature form of music, quite similar in its dynamics to the the 17th and 18th century European classical music. This really works for the ear of a Western classical musician. Exquisitely refined!!! Love it!!!!

Listening to this while reading Yasunari Kawabata's Snow Country, especially the scene where the geisha Komako is practicing on the samisen, is quite a transporting experience. Just to give you an impression, here is a great passage of Shimamura listening to her play:
A chill swept over Shimamura. The goose flesh seemed to rise even to his cheeks. The first notes opened a transparent emptiness deep in his entrails, and in the emptiness the sound of the samisen reverberated. He was startled -- or, better, he fell back as under a well-aimed blow. Taken with a feeling almost of reverence, washed by waves of remorse, defenseless, quite deprived of strength -- there was nothing for him to do but give himself up to the current, to the pleasure of being swept off wherever Komako would take him.
    Beautiful. like narrative haiku.
