  • Fiat Chrysler has merged with PSA Group and the new entity will be called Stellantis.
Stellantis will become the fourth largest carmaker on Earth, behind Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai - but it will be a challenge for Stellantis to survive because it has no sales in China (world's largest car market) as well as massive over-production capacity and commitments with the French Government not to close factories or reduce head count.

I have to say there are reasons, why the merger is logical though: PSA has new platforms & EV technology which FCA need to comply to emissions regulations as well as FCA have luxury brands with high brand recognition which PSA would benefit from.
PSA would like to expand its presence in othet countries outside of Europe to reach a larger audience which would lower the production costs which would equate to a higher profit margin. Because FCA has a lot of dealerships in the USA, they could use those.
Lastly, PSA's Chef Tavares has proven, that he can flip prands around to profit and make them more desirable. The new Opel Mokka E is sold out in Germany. GM Europe was making losses for the past 20 years but after PSA acquired Opel / Vauxhall, they started becoming profitable.

Exactly - I feel this whole thing is just a basing it on stereotypes rather than actual research on how brands stand and rank these days.
Sure it's an odd name but if done right this merger could churn out some interesting stuff.
So many here seem to be loving in the past and cant let go.

What it also means is a door to the US car market, and PSA has access to the Chinese market due to having a chinese car company as a partner (dongfeng?) and the French government do have an ownership stake of around 13%, the French Government have a larger 15% in Renault.

Anybody abused will eventually just give up or work casually. GM kept thinking it was still in the 1960's well into the 2000's. I think two of the biggest problems facing Stellantis’ products, along with Nissan, Renault and Ford’s - in the UK - is their abysmal marketing and poor customer service at dealer level. Their ranges are too complex and confusing to those consumers who exist outside of the industry and the ability to make informed choices is a lottery, leaving buyers to choose German or Asian brands based on perceived reliability. One of our best cars - the Ford Mondeo - has been dropped due to poor sales and yet it is a good car on so many fronts! Dreadful marketing and Ford’s dealership staff have chiefly contributed to its demise rather than it being an irrelevant car in today’s market.

    The circle is complete.
In the late ‘70s Chrysler was in dire financial trouble and ended up off-loading its European car building operation to PSA*.
They continued it on until 1986 (with the small badge-engineered van range limping on as Talbot until 1994) when Talbot was ditched as it was deemed to be unnecessary within the PSA group. Models under development became Peugeots and Citroens.
And now here we are, with Chrysler joining up with the same people who took their European car range off them, tried running it for a few years, and ended up canning it.
Will history inevitably repeat itself here?
    * it’s even more incestuous than that if you go back even further. Chrysler Europe was, until the PSA takeover in ‘78, made up of the British former Rootes group, and the French Simca. Previous to that Simca had been in partnership with FIAT, and had produced a few very heavily FIAT-influenced cars.

PSA has 2 Factories in China (down from 4 about 3 years ago). FCA has 1, making Jeep and Fiat. They are under 2 different JV agreements, PSA with DongFeng and FCA with GAC. Think their current capacity combined is about half to two third of a million cars for domestic Chinese market.
The PSA plants are in Wuhan, which didnt help last year... But it was the reason that when Covid 1st hit, France arranged a flight to extract French citizens from Wuhan, they are mostly PSA workers. PSA also turned a profit with Vauxhall and Opel, which was unheard of under GM, FCA was actually making decent $$$ in China (thanks to Jeep).
As far as reliability goes, Jeep reliability/dependability was top 10 in China, ahead of Toyota and Honda, they must be doing something right over there.
