That cobbler is on the TO MAKE list ! TIP- If you let the suckers grow a bit before you carefully prune them , stick them in water. In a week or so , you'll see roots . Now , you have extra tomato plants.
Just a little tip I found by accident this year with tomatoes plants, I had a couple that had fruit on and the branches broke, so I did as you say and I pit them I a 500ml bottle but with the water I mixed so tomato feed/fertiliser… to the strength it directs used less for less amount. And the 3 I did this with , kept in a safe place so the bottles didn’t fall over… all 3 lots of fruit kept growing and I kept topping the water up and when needed added a little more tomato feed- when I was doing the main plants in pots I added to the bottles to fill them up. And all the fruit came good and got good harvest off them. So I suggest if you get a snapped branch- don’t just throw it away or on the compost thinking that’s that, try and get the fruit to the harvest. Obviously if you have nowhere outside to put the bottle- I used a small greenhouse shelving unit, set of shelves with greenhouse covers basically, I stood mine in there, but if you don’t have something like this then on a window sill is a good idea or even if you have your tomatoes planted in a raised bed then stand the bottle in the bed maybe sink it an inch or so to stabilise it. Hope this helps someone in the future, remember don’t give up as the tomatoes plants can survive in the water and nutrients.
Thank you for your intentional encouraging tone. I'm an older adult who has always been frugal. I don't appreciate the channels that talk down to their viewers. You are doing a great job!
In addition to giving us encouragement, support, and hope… you give us PEACE. Your calm, kind, compassionate voice of reason is so precious during these challenging times. ❤
You guys have literally become my stress beaters! I put your playlist on while cleaning and cooking, and I can feel my stress melting away! Thank you so much for "keeping it real" as you say!
I stopped buy salades. I bought one little package with seeds. And every two weeks I put some seeds in my rising bed. And now I can harvest a full bowl of fresh salade every day. This works until the winter. 😊😊
You guys keep me going here in Central Illinois!! Went to a thrift shop looking for curtains. I came home with 21 canning jars instead... money better spent & still had a blast looking around!💛🙏☕
I was grocery shopping today and bacon was not on my list, but I saw two extra large packages of bacon on clearance for $1.99 a package! I snatched them up and thought, Emmy would be so proud of me! They are in the freezer now.
My husband works 14 hour days and takes all of his meals to eat at work but when he gets home likes a snack ( store bought cookies or chips). I have been making hard boiled/deviled eggs, pb&j or cheese toast, or small appetizer with what we have to tied him over and reduce the added cost. He says he enjoys it more and did not realize I did it to save. Win Win for us. Your garden looks great and love the encouragement. Hope you feel it in return from your subscriber friends. 💕
My sister's name is emilia, we call her Emmy as well. We are half Italian, half Dominican. I was also frugal before it was a thing. We are goal oriented, but not cheap. We started out paycheck to paycheck before when our kids were young. These days we just decided to live the meaningful moments, not spend money on things. That's why I enjoy your channel so much. You guys keep it real, simple, and entertaining.
Did Dixie Belle get to eat the dropped fruit? We call that "dump cobbler" in the south, it is fabulous. I add a bit of cinnamon too. A tip from my lifelong farmer Uncle: Take the section that you remove from between the tomato branches ( we call them "suckers"), place in a small saucer/glass until the roots are well established, then transplant to soil. You have a new tomato plant for FREE! We can and do continue to produce tomatoes here until late September, sometimes early October! Something we've given up: almond butter! Substitute peanut butter instead. Love seeing Loris and Dixie Belle💜
Oh my goodness, almond butter can be super expensive. But recently we found some at grocery outlet for only 99 cents a jar. It was Peter Pan and it was about 11 ounce. 👍
Hi from New Zealand. Your videos keep me going with my frugal ways. I am 29 and pregnant with my first baby, try to be as frugal as possible and taking as much 2nd hand baby items as possible/safe. Am also trying to save as much as possible so I can make additional payments to my mortgage, can't wait to be mortgage free one day!
Congratulations. On used clothing wash with a little white vinegar in the rinse water, the smell goes away but removes any detergent residue your new baby may be allergic to. Also make friends with any baby store consignment shops, in case you get more than needed and can exchange or sell for other options for your baby. Also check your county for possible free car seats, and make sure to check for recalls on those items.
I also accepted 2nd hand items for my children. I saved so much money on clothes and toys. I’m glad you are using that money towards paying down your mortgage.
I really appreciate your upbeat tone around frugality...because some other channels lecture or "reprimand" as you said and that's going to be off-putting to a lot of people. You two are positive and upbeat and because of that people want to be like you...not because you judge them but because you show a positive way forward. Thanks for being beacons of happy at a time when it's hard!
Did you know you can bring your pepper plants inside and bring them back out the following year? Peppers are perennials! They end up becoming thick branched and just keep producing. Thank you for being so inspiring. You are truly a blessing to us all! 💕
I've been replacing the canned chicken in Buffalo chicken dip with cannelini beans mashing them up and then mixing them together as usual my family says they like it better that way canned chicken here is 3.25 now (was 2.25 just a month ago) but a can of beans is only 70 cents
I thoroughly enjoy your videos. We are trying to get out of debt which isn’t easy with todays prices on food and gas but you guys have great frugal ideas!! I really appreciate you both taking time to make videos to help people like me! 😊
I have been frugal since I started earning money at age 12!😆 My parents were Great Depression children. I've always considered my money to be my life's blood in a way...it's my time, for the most part. Time is our most precious commodity! Love your channel!💗
I stopped buying the cheap plastic food containers. I have found a few vintage glass refrigerator containers with lids from thrift stores and mason jars work well to. I was so sick of opening the cupboard door and having an avalanche of plastics with no matching lids falling out.
After digging through and replacing the avalanche of falling containers at my mom's house, I vowed never to use plastic containers again. I gave mine all away and cover bowls with plates for storage. The Dollar Tree had some 12 oz glass bowls with lids and I bought a dozen. I wash and reuse constantly!
I haven't bought any new plastic food containers for a few years but was trying to use up what I have as I gradually switch over to glassware. I'm gradually switching the plastic ones over to non-food storage uses like hobby and office supplies etc.
I can our own jams & jellies. Yesterday, I canned (12) 1/2 pints of Dandelion Jelly. It’s amazing how much it tastes like honey. I’m on 10 acres & we don’t spray our lawn. That’s important when picking your dandelions.
I have re evaluated how I buy fresh fruit/ berries. For example this week in BC, Canada Strawberries (1 lb. size) are on sale for $4 Grapes (2 lb size) are on sale for $3 and Watermelon (11 lb size) is on sale for 80 cent/ pound. I will buy the watermelon because even with a few pounds taken off for the rind, it is the least expensive and is comparable in nutrients to the other two. I will be price matching 3 items this week to save on gas and using 3 coupons. I don't buy soda pop. I went from buying name brand to store brand cream cheese...no difference but less expensive. Good video.
You can also make faux box's from paper bags! By folding down the top I to itself it becomes quite sturdy, use to store .... Anything really... Folded clothes in drawers, small packages to keep tidy etc. The small gift bags work great for this... And you can cut off the top handles, make two tiny holes and insert them on the side so you have a pull handle... Like if you had them on a top shelf of the closet to get them down more easily 😁
Thank you for not being pushy and fear promoting like some other channels. (no names here) I appreciate your tips and recipes. As a believer, I will not live in fear, but aim to live wisely. I think we could be friends.
Another tip If you buy a more expensive type eggs, some come in plastic containers.... Use them for other things like freezing small batches of thing's.. like the milk you mentioned, or olive oil with herb's and garlic or even onion pieces . Then bag those up after frozen!! Even berries chopped up, stuff about to go where it can't be used fresh. I chop up the small bits of green pepper when I slice off the top to stuff them. I was shocked to see just how much more I got, definitely enough to make an omelet
I keep 3 file folders in my kitchen. Green for easy recipes, yellow for dining out coupons, and red for restaurant menus. When I feel to tired to cook and go for the coupons, I see the green folder full of easy recipes. Reminds me to stay on track.
Loved this video because you addressed that everyone's frugal journey is totally different and can be ever changing with our life's changing stages. Yes, we've personally ALWAYS been frugal and will continue to be until we die. Don't need to watch our money at the stage of life we are now but we're forever frugal, looking for the BEST deal. I will forever and never tire of any Freebies I can snag or cheap deals I can get. I do give or donate stuff I don't use or need. Bless others. Gotta keep clutter out especially at our older age...lol Your garden is doing great and motivated me to get going. I'm so late in getting mine started due to all the stuff going on in our personal life. Bought my seeds but will now will just get some plants this year. This weekend is supposed to be cooler so we're doing yardwork and cleaning our garden area is the plan..... We have never been regular takeout or restaurant people and continue to do that for money and health (keep weight off) reasons. We also do not buy snacks/breads/carbs because we are trying to stay healthier.. Cobbler looks delicious but I'll eat with my eyes. I don't bake unless it's for an occasion since we've cut out eating unnecessary sweets. Such a cute clip of Dixie and Loris looking like hmmmmm how long should we sit here together!?? ❤️
Before I head to my favorite grocery store with list in my hand, I head to my local Dollar Tree Store to see if an item is on the shelf. I usually check prices at my grocery store online and then go to the Dollar Tree to check it out. I know there is no guarantee that $ Tree will have an item, but the store is less than 5minutes from my store so I feel I am not wasting time and energy.
If you allow the bits on the tomato plants to grow a little larger, take them off the plant, place the bottom part in water until it grows some roots and you have another tomato plant. Really helps with F1 hybrid seeds which are very expensive.
I am making my own pizza dough and sauce..so,easy. I make a double batch of dough and sauce, and freeze it. Also, now I am making my own cream soups. And,we are fortunate to have a grocery outlet in my town. Also, meal planning and riding my bike, instead of driving my car. Simple changes!
I want you to know that one of the reasons I watch your videos is because of all the encouragement I receive from you and Paul. Some people make fun of me for my frugality and it's nice to spend time with you and like-minded people through your channel
The fruit cobbler looks yummy! I love watching your channel because you and Paul are encouraging and you bring me so much comfort. You inspire me to live a frugal and abundant life and I love doing so. It aligns with my values and what is important to me. It has also helped reinforce the simple pleasures in life and why I find so much comfort and stability in them. Thank you for that.
I used to buy vegetable broth, but with it being around $2/quart, I started making my own! Whenever I am cooking something that requires me to chop a bunch of vegetables, I save those onions skins, celery ends, carrot peelings, etc. and throw them in a pot with water, boil it for a while, and then strain. If I don't need the broth right away, I just put it into small jars and freeze it until I am ready to use it. Thanks, Emmy and Paul, for your encouraging videos! The cobbler looks good. :)
We only eat two meals a day, have for ages. Now we eat one vegetarian meal and one with meat. And of course we eat those leftovers! No waste. We also planted a garden this year and we have been composting. Cobbler looks delicious. I have some homegrown rhubarb, may have to make this. Take care! 😺
I started out frugal because there was no other choice. Now it's just a learned habit. I'm so grateful my husband is the same. We no longer eat out, milk in my coffee rather than half and half, and more basic meals. We also volunteer our time as a social activity. Costs nothing. The teamwork and friendships has really added to our lives.
One of my relatives with a large family used to have 2 or more toddlers running around at her place at one time. Often one would pick up a toy, play with it, drop it and seek another. So she put a number of toys out of sight for a while. When she took them out again, the toddlers had forgotten them. It was like getting new toys. A lovely lady whose newsletter on positive living I used to receive used to take one paper note (currency) out of her purse and hide it in the pocket of an out of season garment because it was such a pleasant surprise to find it again.
Great great video Emmy. And those comments you read, those tips, spot on. All of them. One that holds true to as well is the comfy clothes one. I tell my kids, once I'm home, I'm home. I wear a uniform for work. I get into comfy clothes as soon as I get home. And I tell my kids, (or did when they lived here) if you need me to stop at the store, you need to tell me before. Cuz once I'm home, I'm home. Oh and Emmy, my tomato plants and bell pepper plants coming in nicely. I can't wait to eat them and share some. And a tip I have is: Do your best to keep your home clean and tidy. The reason I think of this as a money-saving tip is when my house isn't picked up isn't tidy then it makes me not want to be here. It makes me want to go out. When trying to get my kids to learn to clean up after themselves in the kitchen when they were teenagers often I would come home and find dirty dishes in the sink and a mess on the stove and what a frustration that is. I'd be at work all day thinking what am I going to cook for dinner and I get home and the kitchen is a mess. First thing I want to do is leave. And when I leave I spend money. So I've noticed in my years that if my house is tidy especially if the kitchen is tidy then I don't want to leave it. I don't feel the need or the desire to go out and buy a hamburger or get tacos or anything like that. I can just go to my kitchen and make it. But I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels frustrated if you have to clean your kitchen before you could actually cook. I don't know how many times I got mad at my kids for this. Oh and Emmy your last tip about trying a cheap brand made me think of something by the way that was an excellent tip so so true. But it made me think because you use pasta as an example it made me think of something I usually do. Now one of the things I like to make is a cold pasta salad with chicken and dried cranberries and bunch of other stuff. It's one of my favorite. Well when I make it I would normally use that corkscrew pasta I don't know the real name but I call it corkscrew pasta and I would get the one that is three colors. Usually Barilla and I can get that usually pretty cheap it's almost always on sale. But the 3 colored corkscrew pasta I get will generally have 4 ounces less than the one color pasta, so instead of it being a 16 oz box it is often a 12 oz box. And when things started going up seriously high in the store I started to think about that. I should have been thinking about it before. But I like the look of the three color pasta in my salad. But to save money I have started using the one color pasta and getting more bang for my buck. It is the exact same pasta same brand only only just because it is three colors they give us 4 oz less of it. So now I'm going to be buying the one color pasta and I'll have 4 oz more for the same price. I've noticed when I look at the pasta that the more interesting the pasta the more expensive it is. Even if it's the same price you might be getting less of it. So maybe choosing a more simple pasta instead of something fancy. Have you ever saw pasta geared towards children? Meaning pasta that were shaped in some cartoon character or some TV show that the kids might like? Those are always more expensive. And it's just pasta. So trying something more simple could be a way to get exactly the same thing as far as taste and nutrition but in a less expensive way. I hope I explained myself correctly. I know sometimes I can rattle on and on. Okay now as far as your question to us what adjustments have I made: Well besides changing my pasta just because it's three colors I shouldn't get less of it I also have changed from name brand lactose-free milk to the store brand lactose-free milk. Actually I'm not really by much of it these days but when I do buy milk I do buy lactose free and I decided one day to try the generic or I should say the store brand and it was everybody's good and it was at least a dollar cheaper for a half gallon. If anybody out there buys lactose free milk they know that it's considerably more expensive than just regular milk. My daughter has no need to drink it but she actually likes it because it lasts longer in the fridge. It's expiration date is double or triple what regular milk is. So we can go a long time without having any milk at all and then suddenly we want some and regular milk might have already been a week or two past its expiration date and we won't drink it so it's wasted money. But the lactose-free milk stays better fresher longer much longer so that's a money-saving tip there. Even if you don't need to buy lactose-free milk look at the expiration dates on them and think about it that way are you willing to spend an extra Buck or two to guarantee that that milk is still going to be good when you want it. I am. Love the tip about cooking extra potatoes. We actually have a microwave and we love it because we do use it for multiple things and something I like to do is I bake potatoes in those for a meal and then when there's leftovers we will use them the next day for breakfast burritos so good.
I have 4 skirts that use for the house they make me feel so comfortable I love to wear them at home. Listen do whatever you like to do that make you feel good your home is your sanctuary.leave all the stress out side off the door and bring in peace
Hi. Recipe says 3/4 cup sugar and also says 1 tbsp of sugar. You have so many great suggestions on how to live more mindfully (I prefer that word to "frugally"). I am striving to be satisfied with what I have.
I just love your videos! I bring my basil in the house over the winter and I must say, it is really wonderful when you "accidently" brush against it and your living room smells wonderful! AND you have fresh basil all winter long as well. You must have a window that gets lots of light.
Girl, those trips down here are making you a Southerner! That’s been our Cobbler recipe for at least 50 years. You can even use canned peaches! And we’ve always pulled off the suckers on our tomato plants down here. Just wait a while to let them get bigger, then pinch them off & start your new plants!
What a great tips all of them!!! I think it might not always have to be a more expensive type"pasta" in the same store. Sometimes a cheaper type in a different store could be the solution too😉.
Piglet Bank: I decided to try a cheaper brand at my local grocery store and found there really was no difference. While at the Dollar Store, I found the pasta that I used to purchase, so I got several packages of it. Hooray! {True, you can't always find your favorite at Dollar Store but when you do, you save $.}
I'm the 'distances herself from stress' lady. I hope that little tip helps someone. I love the cobbler recipe! We make something similar which is listed as "Quick Cobbler" in a local-fundraiser cookbook that I've had for years. It always reminds me of the recipe mentioned on the movie Steel Magnolias..."A cup, A cup, A cup" (something like a cup of flour, a cup of butter, a cup of milk, a can of fruit with the juice, probably salt and baking powder, and bake until golden bubbly...). I absolutely love cobblers because I loved cooked fruit. QOTD: This isn't a sub, but an adjustment. I keep a 5 gallon bucket of un-roasted/green coffee beans as a sort of emergency lot of coffee beans. I've recently dragged the bucket out and have begun using from it. My daughter teased me by remarking, "What's wrong?!?! Why are we using the emergency beans?!?!" ;) I will replace later on, but right now I don't want coffee beans on my grocery list. I've started using some older things from our freezer as well. The veg and such needs used up and we would like to unplug one of our freezers for the summer~~plug it back in when we harvest poultry in October. I'm finding we can put together lots of meals from what we already have with no grocery store runs.
I cut my pop/soda down to 1 cup Friday-sunday. I buy the 1.25 liter and finish it over the weekend after opening it Friday. They are still $1 if you buy 3 @ dollar general...so $4 a month. Some weeks I don't even want it
Inspiring, that’s is also what you are. I always feel very inspired even when you suggestions might not be relevant for my situation. Things I have stopped buying al together are kitchen napkins- I use cotton sheets especially made for the purpose. Cling film - a jar plastic container, a plate as a lid on a bowl or a damp tea towel over the bowl of rising dough. The same goes for foil. Storing leftover food in glass jars helps me remember what I have in the fridge and saves me from having to toss anything. Basically any thing that can be used only once has been taken off my shopping list toilet paper being the exception😉 Makeup pads I have sewn from an old towel in a nice colour - little squares and an easy zigzag. Wash them in a mesh bag with my towels. In regards to spending money: The small town I live in has a Facebook page for anything that might regard us all. Also for selling or giving away things no longer needed. Just last week I ask if anyone could use two perfumes I had from my city days and an avocado plant I no longer had room for… price: a smile. Within an hour three women had come by and letf happy with a new to thing. And I? I felt rich, knowing someone had my unwanted stuff and was now the happy owner of a beautiful bouquet from one woman’s garden and four special kinds of potatoes from another’s. (I have to admit I never thought ANYONE would be interested in my perfumes. It only proves how much most of us have even when we think we don’t. I need an extra water butt, perhaps I just might be able to trad some of my garden plants for one🤔 Once again Thank you for all your inspiring videos ☺️❤️
I absolutely LOVE the "critter" shots at the end...it's like when you used to go to the movies, and the cartoons would show before the movie....(many moons ago)..:) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
As for an idea to save money/set my priorities, on occasion when I want a soda, I take some water enhancing drops, add to a cup of water, slice up a lemon and then top off with plain seltzer. Is it good for you? Not particularly. But, it's way cheaper than soda and it makes me drink more water than I would otherwise. And also, I would like to add on to your garden pep talk. Please, keep trying if you are a beginner and it doesn't go as planned. The only way to get good at it, is to keep trying. This year, even as veteran gardeners, we struggled with the plants pollinating rate. Now, we are swimming in zucchini again.
You are lucky with everything that have bloomed. We are still in early spring weather. Cold one day warm the next snow or rain. I know this month will be a month of spending more. My daughter and granddaughter are coming to Denver so I will go up for 4 days to spend time. Well worth the money spend. I started a few plants to put out after it is warm enough. My tomatoes I need to separate and pot in a bigger container. Like the muffin milk freezer is a great idea. Love your channel. Thank you.
The best thing about you is that you are so non-judgmental and encouraging! My story was a year ago I just made sure I did not go over what I brought in every month. That has changed dramatically and I i’ve been able to organize my finances and get closer to paying off a medical credit card and save as well-so I think your videos helped a lot along with other wise people on RUclips and I have really changed my habits rather than just giving my efforts lip service as I did in the past. Keep up the good work! tracking spending is so important! It is so freeing to know that you’re going to have enough money to get what you need and that you’ll have the wisdom by tracking your expenses to learn what you didn’t need and what you can do better. Thanks!
I have replaced my favorite dish soap with Totally Awesome dish soap from Dollar Tree. It is acceptable and does the job. I am also buying margarine after butter went from $3.17 to $5.50 a pound. I am saving the butter I have in the freezer for special uses. I have also stopped buying bacon.
I have some awesome cleaner from Dollar Tree. (Literally I think it's called Awesome). Anyway, it's a concentrate you can use for laundry. I have gotten soany stains out of clothes that I thought there was no hope for.
I never buy hash browns. I make a baked potato in the microwave, let it cool alittle and slice it and fry in small amt of oil. Hash browns or homefries quick.
diet soda.i drink water or homemade iced tea instead.its cheaper, and healthier. I used to buy sparkling flavored waters, the one liter bottles.i.stopped,because they used to be anywhere from .$75-$1. now, exact same item is anywhere from $2.50-$4. I cut way down on coffee, too. and I use diabetic sugar, sweet and low specifically.i cut down on that, too
I too only drink regular water, tea, and coffee. I found out I am allergic to Aspertame and had two episodes that sent me to the hospital. Reading labels carefully now!
That cobbler looks amazing! I was making a fruit marshmallow salad for Easter. It had maraschino cherries, mandarin oranges, pineapple and so on. I honestly thought to myself, don't throw out the juice Emmy and Paul would make something with it. After 2 days of racking my brain the only thing I could do with it was to add Rum. Thank you for giving us more ideas for uses.
You are both definitely encouraging! And realistically real, which is hard to find these days on social media. Some go too far in either direction. We've cut out pizza delivery and now I make our pizza. I haven't hit on The One Perfect recipe yet, but we're having fun trying out all the not so great ones. And multiple items in the pantry for breakfast - my husband likes cereal for a quick breakfast but asked me to pick up cream of wheat one week. The next week he added more cereal to the grocery list and I asked him if he ate the cream of wheat yet? (Box still unopened in the pantry.) So until that's gone or at least partially gone, he'll be working through that.
@@FrugalMoneySaver I made this one today and it was very good. I used regular all purpose flour and shredded Monterey Jack cheese since that’s what I had it was one of the best ones I’ve tried yet. ruclips.net/video/OHX9gOMfrK4/видео.html&feature=share
The economy brands of canned cat food have just disappeared from our grocery stores here (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). The more expensive brands in the smaller cans are so high in price! Yesterday I bought a can of mackere at the dollar store in the human food aisle for less than the cat food prices, and boy, do the cats love chunks of fish! I can eat it with them too if I feel like it.
I think your blooper is that the teaspoon was green and then it was another color. I get so much inspiration from your cooking and I so enjoyed the vintage recipes you test. So fun!
Our cherry tomatoes are just now exploding with fruits. We have been extra careful with our full sized tomatoes and pruning them well, whereas with the cherry, we kind of let them go. Our garden is coming along about as well as yours. Hopefully we'll all be knee deep in produce and peppers before we know it. Three years ago, we planted 4 bell pepper plants and we literally got 3 gallons of peppers chopped up out of it. That right there saved so much bc we all know how expensive even the green peppers are now.
I cut the cord a couple years ago. No dish. We use an antenna for over the air channels and a roku for free streaming channels. Never looked back. So many channels to choose from!
You and Paul are so encouraging and imaginative when it comes to being thrifty (frugal). My new thing that I'm trying is rinsing the dishes well which is easy as they usually aren't that dirty and then washing them in the dishwasher on the "quick" setting which is 30 minutes. So far so good - dishes are coming out clean. My normal dishwasher run was super hot and long - 2 hours and 15 minutes! I also turn off the dishwasher when it's done so the light doesn't stay on all night and half the day. If I become unhappy with it or someone is really sick then I will try another setting.
Smart! My family teases me because I run the dishwasher only once every six weeks. The rest of the time I hand wash the dishes and put them in the dishwasher to drip dry. Works well and keeps them out of the way.
Fun video! I'm going out to check my tomato plants for those little sucker branches. And can't wait to see your method for cutting basil. The thing I have cut out this spring, is that I was buying a single serve already cooked quinoa meal from Aldi that had a little container of pesto you could stir into it. I used a big spoonful of the quinoa in my daily Mediterranean salad and topped the salad with a few teaspoons of the pesto. Took my salad over-the-top! But the price went up about 50 cents. So now I cook 2 cups of quinoa myself to use throughout the week on my salad and as a side dish, and I planted basil by seed. I can make my own pesto or even just top my salad with sliced basil leaves. YUM!
I'm going to have to try that cobbler. I didn't know to remove the little sprouts on tomato plants. As soon as it stops raining, I'm going to go look at mine. That's probably why they don't produce much. I've stopped buying name brand cereal. We've found we like the cereal at Aldi better. So much cheaper. Last week, I needed bread and didn't want to make another stop, so I picked up a loaf from Aldi. It was pretty good. It wasn't the cheapest loaf they sell, but I can live with it. Just needed bread for the grandkids' sandwiches. I'd really like to make my own. Just need to learn how to freeze the extra loaf, so that it will still taste fresh later. Love the tip on saving the juice from canned fruit. Something else to add to my freezer! Love all the tips and tricks you share. Such inspiration.
Cobbler looks lovely! I have cut most "stuff spending" and instead am thrifting most of the things I want/have on my "looking for it" list! It is amazing what you can find at a great discount if you are just patient! :)
My mom found that recipe long ago, and shared it with me. It became a family favorite! I've used can fruit as well, delicious. Thanks so much for all your videos.
We only shop the perimeter of the store. No more chips, breakfast treats like pop tarts or nutrigrain bars.. we buy store brand frozen orange juice vs the pre made.
That cobbler looked scrumptious. Might have to give that one a try. My sub out is meat. I also try to fast one day a week. (I say try!!) Big hugs from Surrey England xx
I love all your videos! I don't know if you mentioned this previously but here's an easy tip. I save my veggie scraps (i.e. potato skins, onion skins, celery pieces, carrot skins and pieces, broccoli ends, garlic ends, etc.) for a week or until I have enough to use for this. I put the scraps in a large pot with water, cover, bring to a boil then simmer for an hour so. Cool, discard veggies and now you have amazing veggie broth! I freeze it for later use in soups etc. My kids used to call it my garbage soup. Free, full of nutrients and delicious.
I have stopped buying kcups for myself. I have the refillable cup, 3 jars of different strength coffees , my favorite liquid creamer for iced coffee ( I also froze some coffee iced cubes, a reminder from the video last year with your lovely niece) and our favorite shelf stable oat milk for my am latte. Great Value Classic roast/large can is less than $6 and delicious, Dark Roast Food Lion for a little stronger and Cafe Buestelo ( both of those on sale) for iced coffee. My own little coffee station . Love your videos! Thank you! I wish you a wonderful summer!😊💕☕️
I grew up with my mom having those plates your cobbler was served on. Made me smile🥰. Enjoy your videos very much. Great tips today, as we are a retired couple also since 2012. I’m definitely going to try keeping record of our monthly spending!
Thank you for using your spatula! I get very aggravated at cooks who leave food in the bowl or containers of any kind. When my kids were little I used the spatula on the "empty" peanut butter jar and always had enough for another sandwich. We do without convenience foods and shop on the outside isles of the store staying away from prepackaged and boxed foods. Cooking from scratch saves money for us.
I found your blooper, on the video you first had a green tablespoon of baking powder, then changed it to a black teaspoon! But you say it right, it was just the video. Great video as always, I love your encouragement, tips and recipes!
We have gotten rid of buying bread. I now make my own. No judgment :-) I have stopped buying shampoo and conditioner. A little bit because of the cost but more because of the chemical ingredients. I like to use things that are multi-purpose. And believe it or not you can wash your hair with baking soda and water. And it works wonderfully. And conditioner is apple cider vinegar and water with two drops of essential oil. It works great, I've been using it for about 2 years and I don't smell like a salad :-)
I have always used and sworn by Dawn dishwashing detergent. I have trued other name brands and did not like them as they could not compare with the grease fighting properties of Dawn. I finally broke down and tried Radiance from Aldi. It is half the price and really does work!
I needed metal rods to use when blocking large crochet pieces. Blocking rods can be expensive. I watched a video where a man said to use TIG welding rods instead. A friend's son is a welder. He gave me several TIG rods for free. I just finished a crochet project and those rods worked great!
Auntie Emmy and Uncle Paul - a great challenge for June - I actually do this with an app called YNAB but my husband and I will look at non-priority spending as we're probably going to have a major AC repair coming up! I follow your tips because I feel like tougher times are coming ahead and getting ready for it by stocking up safely on food, gardening, and watching our spending is so important. Great reminder and encouragement. And those Basil plants look perfect for Caprese salad! As for replacement items - one was replacing where I was shopping from a Kroger or Harris Teeter to an Aldi, buying my meat directly from a farmer, and also not drinking sodas. I instead use those flavor packets you can buy at the Dollar Tree or Dollar General and use it to flavor 32 oz at a time (the directions say 8oz per packet so I'm stretching it because otherwise, it would be too sweet).
Oh guys! I LOVE your garden. Baby veggies are SO cute! I can’t believe I never knew that about pulling those little pieces off of the tomato plant! I’m watching now because I live where we plant in fall. So I’ll be learning and do some container gardening myself this year. Just haven’t done any in awhile. Thanks as always!
I just cut two bills. I cut Netflix and another subscription I was paying for and not using. I cut another business expenses and have for the last several months bc I wasn’t using that service. It all adds up.
I got tired of milk going bad before we used it! I bought powdered whole milk to have on hand when I need some! Also we love bell peppers but they have gotten expensive and don’t last long in storage so I just bought a 2# bag of multi colored dehydrated bell peppers! They are great!
That cobbler is on the TO MAKE list ! TIP- If you let the suckers grow a bit before you carefully prune them , stick them in water. In a week or so , you'll see roots . Now , you have extra tomato plants.
Yes, Thank you! I will do that and share!
I love that tip - I'll be looking for those suckers now to do this!
I knew this tip, but had forgotten about it, thanks for reminding me!
Oh thanks so much Helen!
In addition to giving us encouragement, support, and hope… you give us PEACE. Your calm, kind, compassionate voice of reason is so precious during these challenging times. ❤
Oh Shannon thank you! That makes my heart so happy!
You guys have literally become my stress beaters! I put your playlist on while cleaning and cooking, and I can feel my stress melting away! Thank you so much for "keeping it real" as you say!
YAY! So kind of you to say!! Thanks!
I also listen for the upbeat mood that comes in these videos!
I stopped buy salades. I bought one little package with seeds. And every two weeks I put some seeds in my rising bed. And now I can harvest a full bowl of fresh salade every day. This works until the winter. 😊😊
If you put it in a small greenhouse or cold frame it might even survive, I have an Italian lettuce from 3 years ago which keeps on giving. Good luck.
@@NJ-xp4eb Great tipp, thank you very much.😊
Might make it trough winter in front of a sunny window if you are lukky...
Sabrina that is wonderful!!! You are such a great gardener!
You guys keep me going here in Central Illinois!! Went to a thrift shop looking for curtains. I came home with 21 canning jars instead... money better spent & still had a blast looking around!💛🙏☕
Where in Central IL? I grew up in Vandalia and my sister lives in Springfield. 😊
Central Illinois here too, really seeing price increases lately 😬
That is the joy of thrifting you never know what you get of your wish list on the day, it is really a bit of an adventure.
My friend went to an estate sale and got 2 gigantic boxes of canning jars for 20 bucks. Beats paying 15 per dozen at Walmart for sure
That is awesome!
I was grocery shopping today and bacon was not on my list, but I saw two extra large packages of bacon on clearance for $1.99 a package! I snatched them up and thought, Emmy would be so proud of me! They are in the freezer now.
YAY!! Tara! SCORE! Great price!
Yep, you have to grab deals when you see them.
Toni thanks so much, we do!
So happy you are here Joana! Thank you!
Emmy, your videos are SO good and packed with love and great helpful tips! You two are a great team!
Susan thanks so very much for your kindness!
For me frugality is a sport, and my savings is the score card.
LOVE that Nina!
OK I am doing this! Will share with you all!
Oh how wonderful for you! A new baby! So happy you find our videos helpful!
Yay for you Eden to want to be debt free and using 2nd hand baby things. You are a wise young woman!
You are smart….
I also accepted 2nd hand items for my children. I saved so much money on clothes and toys. I’m glad you are using that money towards paying down your mortgage.
that cobbler recipe can go for any fruit you have on hand.
you can use oats for the top,too
Absolutely!
What a beautiful comment! Thank you! Please know we were not pointing out other channels just expressing how we are handling these times.
Did you know you can bring your pepper plants inside and bring them back out the following year? Peppers are perennials! They end up becoming thick branched and just keep producing.
Thank you for being so inspiring. You are truly a blessing to us all! 💕
No idea! Thanks!
I've been replacing the canned chicken in Buffalo chicken dip with cannelini beans mashing them up and then mixing them together as usual my family says they like it better that way canned chicken here is 3.25 now (was 2.25 just a month ago) but a can of beans is only 70 cents
That is a good idea. I don't love canned chicken anyway, so this is right up my alley.
Kelsey that is a great idea!
)
I thoroughly enjoy your videos. We are trying to get out of debt which isn’t easy with todays prices on food and gas but you guys have great frugal ideas!! I really appreciate you both taking time to make videos to help people like me! 😊
You can do it! Thanks so much Amanda!
I have been frugal since I started earning money at age 12!😆 My parents were Great Depression children. I've always considered my money to be my life's blood in a way...it's my time, for the most part. Time is our most precious commodity! Love your channel!💗
Thanks so very much for being here!
I stopped buying the cheap plastic food containers. I have found a few vintage glass refrigerator containers with lids from thrift stores and mason jars work well to. I was so sick of opening the cupboard door and having an avalanche of plastics with no matching lids falling out.
LOL! We all know that way too well!
That's wonderful!
Good video.
Great switches Sandra! Thank you!
Great tip! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for not being pushy and fear promoting like some other channels. (no names here) I appreciate your tips and recipes. As a believer, I will not live in fear, but aim to live wisely. I think we could be friends.
That is so kind of you to say! Thank you!
Another tip
If you buy a more expensive type eggs, some come in plastic containers....
We use our not so nice egg cartons for starting plants. We raise our own eggs, yet we keep tons of egg cartons on hand. 😆
Love that Never Mind! Thank you!
I keep 3 file folders in my kitchen. Green for easy recipes, yellow for dining out coupons, and red for restaurant menus. When I feel to tired to cook and go for the coupons, I see the green folder full of easy recipes. Reminds me to stay on track.
That's a great idea! Love it!
Gotta keep clutter out especially at our older age...lol
Your garden is doing great and motivated me to get going.
Sheryl I agree! So many different journeys but the frugal in all of us just can't pay full price LOL! Hope your week is going well!
@@FrugalMoneySaver Yes things are getting better. It is hard losing our parents at any age.
That's a great tip Katherine!
I have planted the leaves that you pull off of the tomato plants and made more tomato plants with them
Yes, I have to do that! Thank you!
If you allow the bits on the tomato plants to grow a little larger, take them off the plant, place the bottom part in water until it grows some roots and you have another tomato plant. Really helps with F1 hybrid seeds which are very expensive.
Yes, I am going to do that!!
Sounds great! Those are awesome changes!
I want you to know that one of the reasons I watch your videos is because of all the encouragement I receive from you and Paul. Some people make fun of me for my frugality and it's nice to spend time with you and like-minded people through your channel
You are so welcome! Thanks for being part of our channel!
Hello🖐️
The fruit cobbler looks yummy! I love watching your channel because you and Paul are encouraging and you bring me so much comfort. You inspire me to live a frugal and abundant life and I love doing so. It aligns with my values and what is important to me. It has also helped reinforce the simple pleasures in life and why I find so much comfort and stability in them. Thank you for that.
Gretchen that makes my heart smile! Thank you!
Veggies broth is literally like free food! I agree!
We only eat two meals a day, have for ages. Now we eat one vegetarian meal and one with meat. And of course we eat those leftovers! No waste. We also planted a garden this year and we have been composting. Cobbler looks delicious. I have some homegrown rhubarb, may have to make this. Take care! 😺
Thanks for watching and sharing!
Love that so much! Thank you Becky!
One of my relatives with a large family used to have 2 or more toddlers
running around at her place at one time. Often one would pick up a toy,
play with it, drop it and seek another. So she put a number of toys
out of sight for a while. When she took them out again, the toddlers had
forgotten them. It was like getting new toys. A lovely lady whose newsletter
on positive living I used to receive used to take one paper note (currency) out of
her purse and hide it in the pocket of an out of season garment because it was
such a pleasant surprise to find it again.
Hello Nina! What great tips! Thanks so very much for sharing those!
And a tip I have is:
Do your best to keep your home clean and tidy.
Okay now as far as your question to us what adjustments have I made:
Well besides changing my pasta just because it's three colors I shouldn't get less of it I also have changed from name brand lactose-free milk to the store brand lactose-free milk.
What a wonderful in depth, well written comment! Thank you so very much!
I have 4 skirts that use for the house they make me feel so comfortable I love to wear them at home. Listen do whatever you like to do that make you feel good your home is your sanctuary.leave all the stress out side off the door and bring in peace
Amen! Love that so much!
Shopping the ad and making my meal prep according to what on sale. We are cutting back on soda.
YES! Laurel meal planning is such a money saver!
Pretty gardens.
Hi. Recipe says 3/4 cup sugar and also says 1 tbsp of sugar. You have so many great suggestions on how to live more mindfully (I prefer that word to "frugally"). I am striving to be satisfied with what I have.
Nope that's not it because I always cut back on sugar LOL. This is a visual blooper during the recipe!
I stocked up,bought seeds, payed most my bills a head of time so for next few months I got only 2 bills. Plan do a lot of canning this year.
Wonderful!!
I just love your videos! I bring my basil in the house over the winter and I must say, it is really wonderful when you "accidently" brush against it and your living room smells wonderful! AND you have fresh basil all winter long as well. You must have a window that gets lots of light.
Is that all you do to your basil when you move it indoors? Make sure it has plenty of light? (Assuming watering on occasion as well)
Thanks Dawn! I've never wintered mine!
@@lesliekanengiser8482 yes. If it looks a little sad, I give it a little food. That's it.
LOL!! Yes! Love that cobbler!!
What a great tips all of them!!! I think it might not always have to be a more expensive type"pasta" in the same store. Sometimes a cheaper type in a different store could be the solution too😉.
Piglet Bank: I decided to try a cheaper brand at my local grocery store and found there really was no difference. While at the Dollar Store, I found the pasta that I used to purchase, so I got several packages of it. Hooray! {True, you can't always find your favorite at Dollar Store but when you do, you save $.}
Thought of you as I checked Shoprite's circular for this week (starts today) as Colavita pasta, at least here in CT, is on sale at 99/lb.
Yes, your destress tip was spot on! It's amazing what we can make from what is already in our homes!
I cut my pop/soda down to 1 cup Friday-sunday. I buy the 1.25 liter and finish it over the weekend after opening it Friday. They are still $1 if you buy 3 @ dollar general...so $4 a month. Some weeks I don't even want it
We don't drink soda much as well.I do like a cup with popcorn. Keeping special things, special. Something to look forward to. 💛
Love that Lori and Becky! You view it more as a special treat now!
Basically any thing that can be used only once has been taken off my shopping list toilet paper being the exception😉
Makeup pads I have sewn from an old towel in a nice colour - little squares and an easy zigzag. Wash them in a mesh bag with my towels.
In regards to spending money:
The small town I live in has a Facebook page for anything that might regard us all.
I need an extra water butt, perhaps I just might be able to trad some of my garden plants for one🤔
Once again Thank you for all your inspiring videos ☺️❤️
Thank you for the kind words! So appreciate them!
I absolutely LOVE the "critter" shots at the end...it's like when you used to go to the movies, and the cartoons would show before the movie....(many moons ago)..:) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
LOL!! Yes Dixie the Diva and Loris the Lounger!
So true Leslie! Never too late to start!
We,freeze the pizza sauce I n ice cube trays and then just pull a couple of cubes out for each pizza.
Brilliant!
We love you an Paul an Dixie
Love you and your wife back Steve! Thank you!
Thank you.
Sounds great! Enjoy your family! Thanks for being here!
Thanks!
Thank you Anna!!
Happy Friday 🤗
YAY! Happy Friday!
Yes, butter is so darn high right now!
I never buy hash browns. I make a baked potato in the microwave, let it cool alittle and slice it and fry in small amt of oil. Hash browns or homefries quick.
That's great Robin!
diet soda.i drink water or homemade iced tea instead.its cheaper, and healthier.
That's so great Rochelle!
I have learned to make home made Spaghetti sauce instead of buying it! It is so easy and delicious and my Daughter cannot get enough of it!
YUM! We do that too! Great!
LOL!!!! Too funny!
Yes, we have never made the perfect one yet either...must be their ovens!
THANK YOU
We gave up soda. We call it "pop" in Michigan. It's just sugar water so we don't need it anyway.
That's wonderful Janet!
Great video as always. Lots of great tips too.
Your container plants look so healthy.
Thanks so much Sheila!!
Thanks for sharing Naomi!
I think your blooper is that the teaspoon was green and then it was another color. I get so much inspiration from your cooking and I so enjoyed the vintage recipes you test. So fun!
YES! I realized it was supposed to be a teaspoon and then I quickly swapped out the Tablespoon I had out LOL!!
Always waiting for your Video 😊🙏so much too learn 🙏🙏🙏 🇦🇺
So nice of you to say! Thanks Deborah!
That's great Leslie! Here's hoping for a bumper crop this year!
Wonderful tips!!! The recipe looks delicious, and I like the way you cut down on the butter and sugar!
Always do LOL!
I cut the cord a couple years ago. No dish. We use an antenna for over the air channels and a roku for free streaming channels. Never looked back. So many channels to choose from!
Isn’t that the truth! We are so much happier!
I hand wash all the dishes (no dishwasher) I guess I'm used to it LOL!!
This is a great tip!!
YUM!
YES! What a great swap! So smart!
So many great tips! Thanks so much for encouraging us.
Thanks for watching!
I have silicone muffin liners, and I use them to freeze mashed potatoes. This is a winner. I can take out one whenever I need one.
Great idea!
YAY! Thanks so much for the channel support!
Cobbler looks lovely!
I have cut most "stuff spending" and instead am thrifting most of the things I want/have on my "looking for it" list! It is amazing what you can find at a great discount if you are just patient! :)
You are so right!!
My mom found that recipe long ago, and shared it with me. It became a family favorite! I've used can fruit as well, delicious. Thanks so much for all your videos.
Thank you for watching Julia!
We only shop the perimeter of the store. No more chips, breakfast treats like pop tarts or nutrigrain bars.. we buy store brand frozen orange juice vs the pre made.
That's great and healthy advice!
That cobbler looked scrumptious. Might have to give that one a try.
My sub out is meat. I also try to fast one day a week. (I say try!!)
Big hugs from Surrey England xx
Big hug right back! Thank you Karen!
Yes, Amy one of the best ways to cut down on food waste!
a small crock pot is handy for this@@FrugalMoneySaver
Frozen fruit cubes are also good in tea.
Yes! Great tip!
Thanks so much Debbie! You have a wonderful summer as well!
I grew up with my mom having those plates your cobbler was served on. Made me smile🥰. Enjoy your videos very much. Great tips today, as we are a retired couple also since 2012. I’m definitely going to try keeping record of our monthly spending!
YAY! It's really eye opening Teresa!
Great video!
Thank you Beth!
Can't wait to see how you cut back your basil.
I showed it several videos ago. Here it is ruclips.net/video/HcVngt2OhQ4/видео.html
@@FrugalMoneySaver Thank you for your reply...I am new to the channel and have been watching in different order. Not always up to date.
I started making oven stuffer roaster instead of buying rotisserie chicken I get more meat the other is so small.😊❤️
Yes! Whole chickens on sale are an amazing bargain!
We love tri-tip and salmon- but right now we have subbed out for chuck roast/ ground beef and tuna. We find lots of yummy recipes for them.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great tip! Cooking from scratch is really the way to go!
Every cooking show or Tik Tok video where I see someone leave a bunch of batter or good in a dish makes me cringe! I think of how wasteful it is!!
Ha ha! I am not alone then. I scrape every bowl, container clean before I wash it.
I found your blooper, on the video you first had a green tablespoon of baking powder, then changed it to a black teaspoon! But you say it right, it was just the video. Great video as always, I love your encouragement, tips and recipes!
YES! I realized my error and switched it out LOL!!
Thanks for all the tips Jennifer!
I subbed out Mall shopping for Catholic Goodwills. So much better!,,😊
The best!
I have always used and sworn by Dawn dishwashing detergent. I have trued other name brands and did not like them as they could not compare with the grease fighting properties of Dawn. I finally broke down and tried Radiance from Aldi. It is half the price and really does work!
YAY! Great swap Laurie!
I needed metal rods to use when blocking large crochet pieces. Blocking rods can be expensive. I watched a video where a man said to use TIG welding rods instead. A friend's son is a welder. He gave me several TIG rods for free. I just finished a crochet project and those rods worked great!
YAY! That's really wonderful!
Yes, preparing ahead is so important! We are trimming that Basil in todays video LOL!
Thanks for the cobbler recipe. I made it and it was delicious.
So happy you enjoyed it!
So glad the video was helpful Sandi!
I just cut two bills. I cut Netflix and another subscription I was paying for and not using. I cut another business expenses and have for the last several months bc I wasn’t using that service. It all adds up.
It sure does!
I got tired of milk going bad before we used it! I bought powdered whole milk to have on hand when I need some! Also we love bell peppers but they have gotten expensive and don’t last long in storage so I just bought a 2# bag of multi colored dehydrated bell peppers! They are great!
So smart!
