Growing up I had always perceived Spam negatively. But turns out it’s actually made of simple/fairly high quality ingredients, and has a pretty wild history. It became popular in WW2 and the US government purchased 100 million lbs for soldiers in the war (they were eating it 2-3 times a day). If you love spam I’d encourage you to check out the @SPAMbrand museum virtual tour, or my RUclips video where I go over more of the history.
Naturally I had to try turning this iconic product premium. Spam is not traditionally made with beef so this sorta felt like cheating, but either way it was a fun one!

Curing salt is basically poisonous in FAR less quantities than regular salt, and it's only meant to brine something in (wet brine, or dry brine that is rinsed off)

Little tip for people: there is no differnce between A5, B5 and C5 Wagyu. The number is the quality. The letter at the beggining is just the amount of the cut from the cow was grade 5.

@@rosenberg1144 yeah, you'd be surprised how many shops sell a5 at like double the price due to a being seen as better and people do fall for it.
@@alexcovey1200 i 100% get what you mean, but isn't there also a prestige with buying the cow that produced the most grade 5 cuts? Isn't the whole concept of wagyu that it's prestigious? Besides the genetic development of cattle that gets treated really well on some mountain in Japan or something. I personally have never tasted wagyu, i eat local meat.
@@rosenberg1144 you see wagyu is a breed of cow. The myth of music and food is false. Cows only came to japan after ww2 and the wagyu breed was bred for succulent cuts that went tender without needing to be cooked for hours. In all honesty, for the average person there is no differnce even between a5 and c4 grade. I think food theory did a decent job explaining it. So yes a5 wagyu is prestgious. But unless you want to brag to your friend, just buy grade 4/5 wagyu and ignore the letter. It tastes mostly the same, since the best way to eat wagyu is in asian cuisine. If you want a hunk of stake, get an angus.

For something different, the other day I took 4 cans of Spam that had been sitting in the pantry for a couple years, formed them into a meatloaf with garlic, red onion, crushed red pepper, and hoisin sauce. Then stuck it in the fridge. After an hour I then wrapped it in thick bacon, brushed it with more hoisin sauce, and baked it at 350F until the bacon was done. It was shockingly good.

Watching Max grind up that sweet wagyu and jacking up that prosciutto stressed me out😭.
In case you're wondering what is so special about wagyu and why it's so expensive; the cows just get a special, really expensive diet that causes the marbling (a lot of fat) which makes the meat very rich in taste. So if you were wondering, those cows probably had the best life a cow could wish for (According to Google👍)

He said that it felt illegal to grind the wagyu, but honestly, it would be the first thing I would do if I had some, I would grind it and turn it into either a hamburger patty or turn it into un rico picadillo
WHY?? JUST USE EXTRA FAT! An A5 is a bunch of fat so just ask your butcher or local store with a meat department for 5lb of fat then mix with like 8lb of premium beef like top sirloin or eye of round for less fat and it will taste scarily similar. Source I'm a butcher.
