Stam Fine Reviews looks at the 1987 film Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
Starring Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Mariel Hemingway, and Margot Kidder; Superman IV is, in a word, yikes!
The film series' original producers offloaded the film rights to Cannon who made what turned out to be the last movie to star Reeve, who in turn wanted a specific storyline in order to appear as the Man of Steel. Budget cuts turned this into a, well, have a look.

I remember seeing this on the shelf in my local video store back in the late 80's, after greatly enjoying the first two movies I was excited to see it particularly since Gene Hackman was back as Lex Luthor..that excitement had completely vanished by about 15 minutes into the movie..

You're a tiny bit nicer to this than everybody else who covers it, so kudos for being different. I also kind of liked Gene Hackman's and Jon Cryer's chemistry. Too bad they never teamed up in anything else.
The comics adaptation (which sticks closer to the original concept and doesn't have to worry about having its budget slashed) is actually a good sight better. Superman IV was probably never going to be a "good" movie, but it didn't have to be the disaster it was.

Went to see it with friends in the theater, so would have been 13 or 14. It started off with an ominous scene on a playground with a plane flying over. Then it cut off, and we had to change theaters as they had the labels switched between Superman and La Bamba. Even at that age we realized pretty quickly we should have stayed.

The Salkinds totally mismanaged the whole franchise. Not letting Richard Donner finish Superman II was the first mistake. Richard Lester made that a lot cheesier that it should have been. Donner's work saved that from being the dreadful mess that a 100% Richard Lester mess is (see Superman III). Getting rid of the whole franchise for part IV was an opportunity to reverse that. However, totally the wrong company got hold of it and just kept hammering the nails into the coffin. Learning how this whole project was doomed before it started is tragic. Christopher Reeve was totally screwed over with this. It's interesting how TV shows (Lois & Clark, Smallville and Superman & Lois) can get it right, yet the movie industry seems to find it so hard.

The Donner cut of Superman 2 is awful for the most part, what Lester did with it was campy in places, but what some conveniently forget is that Donner had plenty of campy stuff in his version too. Some changes Lester did really made a difference too, like replacing Brando with York that makes far more sense to Supermans return, which was ridiculous in the Donner cut, while the ending to that version was just as bad for a number of reasons.

Its heart is in the right place, conceptually. Reeve hated the comedy of parts 2 and 3 and only agreed to coming back for a 4th on the proviso he could use it as a platform for a very serious issue he wanted to address, the arms race and nuclear disarmament. Unfortunately the productiom was a nightmare and the budget was tiny, so it suffered the same fate as dozens of sequels and killed the franchise.

They did this to make maximum profits off tent pole movies and stars, without too much outlay.

Because they really cheated the fans by taking half of the movies 34 million dollar budget which they were GIVEN by Warner bros to make superman 4 and spent it on another film they were making at the same time (masters of the universe), just so they could make more of a profit. So this film only had 17 million spent on it instead of the full budget. I think if it had the full amount of 34 million spent on getting the best writers, best FX teams, real locations ect, it could have been one of the best because of Christopher Reeves enthusiasm for the project because they promised him he could have some creative input into the film. But pure greed of those two cousins cheated the cast and the fans.

    It's a perfect silver/early bronze age
COMIC book story. From the dialogue to the storyline itself. However for a movie? Eh. Everything was shoddy. At this point it's only been 9 yrs since Superman the movie. Yet Reeve, Kidder, and especially Jackie Cooper look at least 20 yrs older, Superman is not supposed to age so quickly, and Jimmy Olsen looks 35 in this movie what the hell is he still doing here? The story is rushed, full of holes, and never gets going. Luthor , who wore wigs in the first two movies because he was bald, now looks like a balding middle aged man who somehow grew more of his own hair and is no longer vain enough to cover it up. The production , special effects, lighting, sets, filming locations all suck. There is NO love out into this movie. Reeve as great as he was can't save this film. It's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. Once Donner was fired it was the beginning of the end. In retrospect having the first two movies be one connected story made it impossible to grow. Especially when you replace the director of the first movie. Sad ending to the greatest Superman ever.

Thank you for dragging Milton Keynes' terrible design. I'm so glad the only times I ever went was via taxi.

Oddly, this was the only sups film I saw at the cinema. Even as a 9 year old I thought it was rubbish.
Looking back on it now, I guess the idea was decent enough, and the bit where he chucked the nukes into the sun was quite cool. But it was so cheap looking it's hard to take seriously. Milton Keynes trying to be metropolis FFS...
Yes, it's the only town in the UK with a US style road grid system, but that's about it.

It may be bad, but it is still head and shoulders better than Superman III. At least this one was trying to be an actual superhero movie, and wasn't created just to be a (lame and unfunny) vehicle to promote Richard Pryor's career.

This is a waste of the talented involved, and yet another example of never trusting cannon films to put in effort. But it’s still silly enough to make it watchable. Superman 3, to me is still the worst of the reeves superman movies.

Bryan Singer has made some terrible mistakes in his life, disregarding Superman III & IV was most definitely not one of them! Certainly he had plenty of good reasons to do that.

i saw this as a kid back in the 80s as i was 7-8 years old when it arrived on HBO and it was shit. it hasn't aged well. the science, a subject i was never good at mind you, is horrendous. it looked cheap and i hated the "ban nukes" bullshit. the only thing in that film that is any good is... gene hackman. i've seen him in bad movies but he's never given a bad performance. he's one of those RARE actors that can't suck.

The first Nuclear Man in the original cut of the film looked like Bizarro with a mixture of Lobo thrown in.
Regarding the director, too bad Furie is mostly known for this turd and the Iron Eagle films. He should be better remember for directing the film that made Michael Caine a star, The Ipcress File, and an excellent kitchen sink drama called The Boys.

Superman IV would have been better as split up into little pieces and made into a sitcom so it can be cancelled as a bad American series and not part of movie canon.

You nailed it. After the huge disappointment when this film was released and a lot of time passed, this film has become a guilty pleasure only because my expectations are so low going into it. It somehow makes the film more enjoyable. Hackman as Lex Luther is also fun to watch no matter how bad the film is. It's easy to see some of the interesting story elements had huge potential, but just failed to come together in typical Cannon fashion. But then, MANY Cannon films are a guilty pleasure for me, so what do I know

With a big enough budget and better writers it could have been a good film. Nuclear man had potential to be a formidable enemy for Superman.

After seeing the first 3 films l was excited to see 4 but not seeing Lex Luther again l want something new Lex had his time in the first 2 films ,the 3 rd film was ok but a lot of slapstick and the 4 one was worse l heard found out many many yrs later they split the budget for two films 2nd one being Heman which was way better story and effects. The forth film could’ve been epic like Tim Burton’s BATMAN in 1989,can u blame Chris not wanting to do another film after Burton’s BATMAN film. And in the late 90’s we lost Burton’s version of SUPERMAN which l be leave would’ve been epic as well ,BUT WE’LL NEVER REALLY KNOW WILL WE

So many people are ripping this movie apart, wish they did the same critical butchering to Snyder's hack job. Cause this movie with ALL it's visual flaws, is FAR superior where it counts and that's the heart and the character of Superman and what he is actually here to do. It's the only Superman movie to date that does what is needed to actually help the planet and not just fight bad guys... but hey! if there's no SuperCGI beating up other CGI then no one is impressed...

Thats an Interesting fact that it was filmed entirely in England i didn't know that. However I'm not surprised, there is a scene shot in what is supposed to be a New York subway station. But even as kid of 12 who'd never been to NYC i could tell that it was blatantly a London underground tube station albeit with a name change.....Thats really pathetic cost cutting.
