But I sell my commissions on there, along with other products like; ychs/bases/and custom assets, and a patreon alternative style of memberships.
@@TheArtMentor I haven’t even started using it to be honest! I hope to host specific commission options, and digital products like planners, phone backgrounds, etc for a passive income option. ko-fi, at least to me, feels like a patreon, Etsy, and social media all in one. I also see other artists sell physical products, which I also thought about doing, the only problem is that shipping is all on me. I’m just keeping my options open. Thanks for replying to my comment!
@monstxrblade can I offer you some advice? I think you’re offering too much at once when you haven’t got a hold on one thing. Why not pick one of those, get a footing, then add one, get that footing, and then the other. How’s that sound?
This really helps thank you! I’ve been making art for about 2 years now, and I’ve made alot of progress. I’m really starting to take it seriously now, and I’m going to start practicing the fundamentals tomorrow. Luckily I have alot of time because I’m sick and can’t really go to school. I’m going to try to start my own business, and your advice really helps! ☺️ +1 subscriber

Also you always recommend to focus on one genre or niche, do you have any tips or an exercise that can help make that decision? I am a severe dabbler because it’s a big commitment for me to stick to one thing, on top of my indecisiveness.
good question, easy answer! If you could only make one type of artwork regardless of an income for the next 10 years, what would it be?
@@TheArtMentor I am not sure, but I’ll think about that as I draw and maybe a consistent pattern will come of it
I used to have a huge problem with gaming as well. In December of 2013, I decided to stop gaming and spend that time on grinding my art skills instead. I've made crazy progress since then. That said, I still don't feel like I'm any closer to being a top tier artist. Every time I progress, I simply realize that the top tier level was actually further away than I had previously thought. Is that odd? It's really strange to see huge progress and still feel like you are not moving.
Yes, I'd say that's more than normal, but necessary! Every mountain climb reveals a new peak, endlessly. So how about creating specific things to achieve this year and making 1 specific goal to achieve in each work other than "make this the best artwork ever" and then feeling good about it?
@@TheArtMentor I'm already working in this particular goal-oriented fashion. 😆
In addition to that, this year I've really started tracking my art time very accurately. I want to make sure I spend roughly 1/3 of my time on studies, 1/3 of my time on fun art, and 1/3 of my time on serious finished pieces. Because I think overtraining has been one of my biggest problems. 😅
That’s an awesome schedule! I fully approve ✅ how did you come up with that?
@@TheArtMentor Last year, I tried 50% studies and 50% finished pieces, the idea of which I got from a video by Clint Cearley. However, it can take me anywhere from 1 to 3 months to make a finished piece, but I can easily finish one or more studies in a day. So despite the 50/50 split, it just felt like I created an enormous pile of studies and almost no finished art. So this year, I figured that I needed to spend even less time on studies, and introduce fun pieces that I can finish quicker.

I have started practicing more then few few of the points you have made here such as experimenting with different art styles and taking breaks. I primarily do 3D anime style environments and have started making 3D anime characters and returning to 2D (I have been experimenting with 2D digital character illustrations for the past 3 - 4 months) has helped me improve a fair amount in 3D. I have also found from taking breaks that I can get out of my head and take a fresh look at my work and fix/improve things that don't look right that I hadn't noticed before.
great tips! What's your big goal or project in mind that connects all of those efforts?
@@TheArtMentor My 2D goals are pretty simple and that is to create illustrations of anime style characters both fan art and original. The 3D is a little more complex since it's very fluid (IMO anyway) while my main focus is anime game and film level design be it for environment illustrations or animated backgrounds and in the future short films should that become an interest. Smaller 3D goals can be asset creation for building a scene just as an example. Anyway my bad I didn't mean to ramble. Thanks for the like and the reply, I look forward to more of your future videos.
So in one of your vids (I have been binging them in the background while I draw so i don't remember which one) you said you knew where to get great FREE dynamic references and you could do a video on it if people were interested. thats cause video game has level designers and artist that carefully crafted a specific area or scene so you can idk study just by redrawing something
unless its asset flip where they compile assets they didnt created themselves where you can spot flaws
or old games that visually outdated but leaves a lot of rooms for imagination
lets say that old game called vangers where its a top down racing game from 90s but if you redraw using your imagination and the game as a reference you can make something new
that's an interesting take on this. Also why videogames can suck you in so much since you have so many reward systems, and yet, I wonder how you produce that same effect on your artistic efforts?

a game world is very friendly towards you compared to reality since people are dangerously unpredictable while a game always play fair cause a video game cant exist without you
since games cannot play themselves atleast not in a complex way
and probably cause video game were designed to have fun and since theres no expectations from you to always perform at your absolute maximum and beyond cause in video games no one judges you and you are only pleasing yourself
until a game is multiplayer or worse competitive
and basically theres a beginning and an end in a video game thats only matter of skill and time while making best artwork can still make you unknown forever if you have worst luck imaginable
then you create a video youre forcing either yourself or put unrealistic expectations where everything has to be perfect first try at all times or else its a critical failure
if you make a mistake in video game thats as simple as let me try again but do things slightly differently to progress and you dont take the mistake seriously at all but you just learn what can be done and how while creating content then you have zero experience is not only completely alien but also intimidating
if you played rain world which is very difficult game for good reasons you would understand
but some players would quit from frustration but on creating content theres not one but several difficulties that stacks
definitely true. So how will you create similar situations to succeed with your art based on those understandings?
@@TheArtMentor thats a difficult problem thats very unpredictable
the best you can do is dive into the unknown and hope for the best
but at the same time you need to be careful cause resources can run out or your setup is so unoptimized something is holding back
besides some game by design would not let you cheat or outsmart it even if you try your best you still have to follow some rules
unless the game lets you but never tells any tips or tricks that can only be learned trough experimenting
and if the game becomes way too easy you get so bored you dont want to play anymore cause it gives zero challenges
but in games you have saves but in reality consequences are usually permanent
if its borderline challenging you have basically no choice but to think differently and go back to better prepare and return to difficult stage once you know how to use a skill and maybe have better gear
also a little luck is also involved where a game might change some enemies position to make it easier for you but you can still mess it up and the game decides to give you the hardest enemy position
and ultimately everyone journey is random and some might have better time then others or they gaved up at the start where you only reached the middle so far
find what you love and go do/ learn it don't put it off with there will always be tomorrow there won't always be a tomorrow

I used to have that childish mindset where I would try ANYTHING because my little brain craves forbidden knowledge. Career-wise, it does hit the nail for me. It's just sad how that in some parts of the world (I don't know where, but there's that constant feeling that you will be seen as a shameful lowly pest if you take a small job), you will be humiliated by the modern audience that sees you as a lowly part-time working student.
That, or maybe because I worry too much of expectations... which I hate myself for.
As for the "your final product won't be the same as what's in your mind", I remember having so many old drafts I never finished. But reviewing them, I could improve on them if I would remake them. Currently reclaiming my braincells in Web Development - I was told that not only it's high-demand, but it's a great domain to INFLUENCE others.
have you ever tried revisiting those old artworks and reworking or totally remaking them? That can be a really powerful experience
@@TheArtMentor I look back at them all the time. Although I attempted to remake some, I am still yet to finalize them.

Games are good in moderation. I spent a majority of Overwatch 1's lifespan just playing it when I could've been drawing more instead (I was barely drawing at the time). It does feel like lost time whenever I think about it...
All good and fun within moderation! Totally agree. Yet we're kind of pushed into being mediated with this and so many other numbing factors, aren't we?
