Sacrificing on intuition takes incredible confidence, which Morphy, Alekhine, Tal & Kasparov fortunately had & which allowed them to produce so many beautiful brilliancies. Bravo for intuition!

Doubtful, his comment diminished his own calculating ability. GMs in general like to cultivate the myth that they calculate everything, however, some of the greatest players occasionally admit they calculate to a degree, and if can’t see everything, still will proceed on intuition, particularly when their clock is ticking. Some of Kasparov’s most famous sacrifices were done on intuition and general assessment of position. Seems Alekhine and Tal did so too. Key is having excellent grasp of chess principles, the courage to trust one’s calculations, and to follow one’s intuition for whatever has not been calculated all the way to mate.

This game was fascinating and I especially appreciated the conversation at the end between Najdorf and Alekhine. It is reaffirming to me that the moves got so advanced that even these incredible grandmasters needed their intuition rather than solely there calculational skills to choose the best next move. Would Capablanca, Tal or Fisher have done the calculation to the end? What is your guess?
