Presented by Dr. Salmi, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology and Surgery at Stanford University, this session dives into the critical anatomical structures within the chest and their role in various conditions that present with chest pain.
Understanding chest pain begins with knowing what’s inside the chest. The rib cage, sternum, and diaphragm form the structural framework, housing vital organs like the heart, lungs, and esophagus. Each of these plays a role in the diverse causes of chest pain, ranging from cardiac emergencies like myocardial infarction (heart attack) to non-cardiac causes such as pleuritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and costochondritis.
Chest pain related to cardiac anatomy is often serious and includes conditions like coronary artery disease (CAD), where narrowed or blocked arteries limit oxygen supply to the heart. Dr. Salmi explains how conditions like angina or a full-blown heart attack (myocardial infarction) develop, emphasizing the importance of recognizing these symptoms early.
Non-cardiac chest pain also has anatomical significance. Pleuritis, for instance, involves inflammation of the pleura, the thin membrane surrounding the lungs, causing sharp pain that worsens with breathing. GERD, a common gastrointestinal cause of chest pain, results from stomach acid refluxing into the esophagus, often described as a burning sensation in the chest. Costochondritis, a musculoskeletal cause of chest pain, involves inflammation at the junction of the ribs and cartilage, often pinpointed through tenderness on palpation.
This session also highlights the importance of using anatomical knowledge to create a differential diagnosis-a critical skill in identifying the underlying causes of symptoms. You'll learn how to prioritize life-threatening conditions while ruling out less severe causes.

Dr. Salmi is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology and Surgery at Stanford University.
He obtained his M.S. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University in 2005 and his M.D. from U.C. Davis in 2010. Dr. Salmi completed his Residency in Anatomic Pathology at Stanford University. He is specifically interested in autopsy and cardiovascular pathology. Due to his outstanding lecture style, he has received numerous awards for excellence in preclinical teaching.
