I've watched a few 500cc GP races from 1984 - I saw them at the time. Looking back it is obvious to me now just how well Barry Sheene was riding - genuinely as fast an anyone and far and away the best rider on an RG500. What a shame he didn't get at least an NS500 for 1985. He would have been a serial podium finisher and potential race winner. Amazing to reach that level again just over a year after the Silverstone disaster of 1982.
I'm a young guy, probably younger than you may think, but I'm an absolute fan of the 70's, and 80's riding style, the bikes and especially the riders, with King Kenny, my all time favourite, then Freddie Spencer, Barry Shene, and Jack Middelburg. These people gave such awesome races, that MotoGP of today can't even compare!! Splendid riders!
Great historical document, but when I see the year I immediately think how things were in South Africa at that time. Being in Africa and not a single person of the majority population anywhere to see. I nevertheless enjoy watching the race. It was not the riders' fault anyway.

For a guy from California (where it hardly rains) Lawson rode brilliantly. Very smooth and steady....

A wonderful ride by Barry, he still had the talent to win but it's a shame that he did not get the factory backing. Still a superstar.
ThE final recovery of Barry Sheene IS amazing....if ThE race had been 5 laps LONGER😀, he would have been from 15th to 1st....with ThE infamous Suzuki
