Last year was the trip of tunnels for me. I drove down and back to Italy. I drove through more tunnels during trip than I ever in the previous 43 years of my life. The Frejus tunnel going to Italy, Mont Blanc on the return journey, and this A86 was the last of the big tunnels. All were awesome to drive.
The hard shoulder is on the left only to Saint-Denis, in the other direction the hard shoulder is on right. Because it's a double deck tunnel, emergency exitsand ERAs are common side for the two decks.
I think it is reasonable that the shoulder is to the left side because there are more direct exits toward the twin tunnel. And besides, there are many arrows indicating the right direction.
That is one crazy looking tunnel... It looks like something from a si fi movie a little bit because of the walls and its design... Super long tunnel as well... In miles how long is it?
Awesome tunnel! I don't like that left shoulder though, it can trick you into thinking that you're driving the wrong way. Even if having it on the left may make some sense (because there's a left-hand exit), the dashed lane markings should be on the right.
Roads of Europe (verreme) Why not paint the median yellow like Norway and North America? Also, I think the shoulder is on the left because you can access more rapidly emergency exits.
Merci.
Does the tunnel have exact 10.000 length to avoid some extra regulatory burdens for tunnels > 10.000m? Is the shoulder on the left to match a right shoulder on the deck below, or is it meant to facilitate exit of solo drivers? I driver there twice, always at night though, feels very empty and almost creepy at 1 or 2 AM (times I've driven there). Nice to see the approach with daylight.
+Andre Lot The other deck has a normal right-hand shoulder. Only this one has this inverted layout. The reason is the "twinning" of the emergency exits of either desk.
Incredible! I can't contemplate a tunnel like that being built in the United States. How was the driving experience? I hear it is a bit claustrophobic.
Just been through it (by mistake!) in the early hours....never saw another car and it felt as though the whole lot was going to topple in at any moment....worth doing it for the experience! : )

-Enters double-deck A86
-Only 2 meters high
-Shoulder is on the left
*Uncomfort 100*

we went through this a couple of weeks ago with a roofbox on and i must say it scared the crap out of me.
Thank you for this excellent video

There is nos street view of this tunnel. I think is because of the height of Google vehicles.
Awesome video by the way !
yeah I also came here because it's not on street view

Amazing on my bucket tunnel list
Very nice thank for this video cheers !
Only me who finds this tunnel claustrophobic to look at?
That is one crazy looking tunnel... It looks like something from a si fi movie a little bit because of the walls and its design...
Super long tunnel as well... In miles how long is it?
+Lord Zeyphr 10.4 divided by 1.6 make... 6 miles and a half ;)
Went through this tunnel accidently a few years ago :(
Tunnels of Paris
Went through this yesterday... in a Ford Transit Custom! We only just fit. May upload the video soon!

Tall NBA basketball players would bump their heads just walking in that low ceiling tunnel!!!

Andre Lot I think the exact length is near 10500 m.

Actually there is a tunnel being built like this (one bore, two decks) in Seattle to replace an old viaduct on the downtown waterfront.
J'AI PEEEUR
Ok!😄
In indonesian we will have this maybe this tunnel the long is 60 km september our next year in road toll from bandung to connect toll trans java.
Are you going to make more vids of driving in Spain?
Ng10 Yes, I have lots of footage from all over Spain. It will be released during the next few months.
Tunnel in París
May I ask why you make these trips? Do you combine it with work or is just pure leisure? Just curious ^^
HelixR This was a two week vacation in Spain.
European Roads Excuse me, but where you from ?
+European Roads Is not this in France?

Why would anyone be so stupid as to propose, let alone build, a motorway tunnel with a 2m height limit?
Looks like you don't know Elon Musk...
Where exactly in Spain?
Ng10 Paris is in France.
In France, no spain
For the moaners of this tunnel, next time stick to using the blackwall tunnel 😂
Elon : "Let's reduce the tunnel diameter and put some RGB lights in it!"
Broke down in the Blackwall Tunnel luckily the guy behind me had a rope in the back of his car and towed me out
Excellent quality video, monumentally stupid planning/engineering.
