Good afternoon, Emma! 😂 Id like to once more put in my vote for the book spider to be named Webster, both in reference to the dictionary as well as being a web/spider pun. It is silly.
You can return the book with the glittered and nail polished edges. Thrift Books will replace it. I have had no trouble with their customer service people. You have to contact them online first and then they will get back to you. Good Luck. Sorry about your bad day (s).
my anxiety has been so high recently. i have found your videos (and your botm sponsorships!) so comforting and the perfect distraction. thank you, emma!!
I LOVE deckled edges. I am so happy when a book unexpectedly has them. I'm literally keeping a book I don't like because it has them and I bought one edition specifically for them😂
Seven Days in June also has a MC who suffers from chronic migraines (as well as the author herself) and really explores what that’s like, if you’re interested!!
Ah, Puff the Magic Dragon was part of my childhood, but more in song than book form. "Dragons live forever, not so little boys" was diabolical. Who writes a children's song telling kids they're going to die? Playful dragons are cool. Memento Mori! LOL.
^^^I agree. When I got a little older, I always associated the song with puffing marijuana and/or chasing the dragon. Like H.R. Pufnstuf. Good grief. Crazy times, man. But I digress. I found Emma from Carolyn Marie and I'm so glad I did. Emma's Canadian accent reminds me of my childhood in Minnesota.
Deckled edges are elite 👌🏻 I will go out of my way to get editions with deckled edges. I love the feel of them. I love that most of the paperbacks are floppy. I love that they feel “softer” than other books. Just 10/10 books all around. More importantly, I hope you feel better soon!
Omg thank you for mentioning how underrepresented chronic migraine rep is in books!! I suffer from chronic migraines and I read a song of wraiths and ruin when it came out and it was so nice to see my pain acknowledged. It really isn’t talked about in books like you said (I’ve read nearly 500 books and could probably count on one hand how many that have touched on it and not even use all the fingers)
They turned His dark materials into a three season tv show and I loved it! I would say it was pretty accurate and the actors did a great job, I recommend! ❤
The tv show of his dark materials is sooo amazing. Great acting and the animal companions are done really well. Really great show and got me so hooked to read the books.
You might want to check the TW and controversies with Emily A. Duncan before you read Wicked Saints! It was really atmospheric and the wintery vibes were great, but just wanted to warn you about that!
Yes, it is sad that there is no more representation of migraine. As someone who suffers from chronic migraine, I am constantly looking for representation of migraine in literature, movies, art to see how others live with migraine and to find some meaning in so much pain. I have read Seven Days in June, but the first book I read that represents migraine was When Nietzsche Wept by Irvin D. Yalom and that book is amazing. Hope you get well soon Emma 🍀
12:27 I feel that pain very, very, deeply. I've been burned twice by second hand sellers. One I had ordered was listed as great condition. When I opened it, it was super sticky. It was like some drizzled syrup all over it. The second time they said it was in good condition and then when I got it, it was completely water damaged. Life lesson, don't buy it if they use a stock photo and not an actually photo. I've learned that the hard way lmao
Oooh I remembered reading the golden compass from my school library and never stopped thinking about it, and then I finished the series in the lockdown. It feels so special everytime I see it mentioned any where!
damn you unlocked a core childhood memory of being obsessed with the golden compass movie! i didn't know it was based on a book, i just found it randomly on tv once and processed to be obsessed over it for a few months, only to then completely forget about it until now
This was sooo fun! I have been with Thriftbooks (and shipping costs to Ontario) for 3 years now. This episode looked like my place today, as 4 books came! What a great store! Thanks for sharing your joy!
About that sweet smell from old books, recently I read that this kind of smell (something like vanilla) is due to paper decomposition (celullose and chemicals on it). Sometimes it could be sweet, sometimes it could be fruity. Hope it helps. 😊
Emma, your book from the cleveland library, reminded me that my massive oak bookcase has a label stating property of Cleveland public library, solid oak and massive , Cleveland is an hr from my home. great haul.
I'm sorry you're sick, Emma! Thank you for persevering and getting the video out for us. Hope the kayaking was fun. Hot water with lemon and honey always helps me when I have a sore throat. My grandma sore by it and it got me through bombardments of virus in the dorms.
As long as the lemon trees grow... definitely read it❤.It's set during the Syrian Revolution where our protagonist is 18 year old pharmacy student turned seasonal surgeon (due to the lack of doctors) and we basically get to see the harsh realities of war through the eyes of the civilians she treat. It also follows the themes of love, friendship, loss and the fear generated from it (I'm looking at you, Khawf) ...I believe everyone should read this book❤❤❤
Omg when the architecture book quoted Han Byung-chul I gasped - I just read his work “non-things” this month, it was so so mind-blowingly eye-opening. It’s a philosophical yet practical essay on why the era of smart phones has made us lonely. I think you would really like it ❤
Since I am relatively early, I want to say that I appreciate you as a person Emma. Also, I am not sure if you read it already, but Pachinko is a generational novel which might interest you. I really enjoyed reading it.
Summer colds are miserable! Feel better! I really enjoyed your book haul and your reactions 😄. There are some beautiful ones in the haul. I truly love Puff the Magic Dragon. When I was a child I had the record. Yes - I'm that old 🤭. I really like deckle edges that are done well - though perhaps they do not have the same satisfaction with the page flip. My personal experience with buying used online has led me to only purchase ones rated "very good" or "like new". My "good" is often not the same as their "good." Also I am convinced they often don't even give the pages a quick flip to make sure there isn't an issue - like your nail polish edges 🤷♀.
I actually didn't like Normal People when I first read it, but after watching the show I completely fell in love with the story. I really really really recommend watching the show!
yes to this!! i read the book first too, and a couple months later (after the confusion had worn off) i got to the show.... the screenwriters really showed their stuff with the tv adaptation!!
Probably the fastest I have ever commented on one of your videos, but I almost started crying just at the words “puff the magic dragon”. My dad used to sing that song to me when I was little and I’m literally fighting tears right now thinking about it and its last few stanzas/lines. Incredible what a kids book/song can do to you, even so many years later. Thank you for making my heart warm with that today 🥹❤
hey emma...it's quite early in the morning here and i woke up feeling sick & this video really comforted me. tbh all of your videos feel like a close friend talking to you...thank you so much for being my light in these stressful days of my life
book of the month thing is so SMART because i couldn't care less, i honestly always skip, but i watched the whole thing! it was so entertaining. very very clever
Omg I've had The Discomfort of Evening in my book case for agessssss and I've never heard anyone talk about it! Definitely makes me want to pick it up, really excited to read from a Dutch author!
Hi Emma, I've read The Discomfort of Evening this year and it was so good! It's really sad and I think shows childhood trauma in a very poetic and disturbing way. But I loved it! 😅
oh my gosh i LOVED Your Letter when it was first releasing on webtoon! It’s soo cool to see it being published i highly recommend it. Felt a lot of feelings because i related so much to the main characters😭
OMG when you pulled out normal people i got so excited because i just bought a thrifted copy yesterday myself!! it'll be my first ever sally rooney too, so, double excited and a bit nervous since there's always that divisive opinion over the writing style. my copy smells fine but it's a bit bent and waterlogged so i'm just keeping it pressed until i'm less annoyed. nail polish as edge spray had me cracking up though... what a choice 😭 i hope you get well soon emma!!
I hated and loved the discomfort of evening, I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this! Also from a Canadian perspective, as I'm from Belgium and more closely know Dutch culture, it will be interesting to hear what you make of it 😅
Get well soon, Emma! You poor, unlucky girl :c Let's hope that the summer gods will be kinder to you for the rest of it. Also really excited for you to read Normal People. It really impressed me. And hooooly shit, yes I had bionicles! I had totally forgotten about their existence. Wow, that brings me back...thanks for that nostalgia boost 💜😂
The cover of the Bionicle book broke open a whole set of memories I forgot were in my brain. I absolutely played with that red Bionicle while my sister battled me with the green Bionicle for hours and hours and hours. We had a whole army of them. Thank you for that 😂 truly hope the book is a masterpiece.
Omg I loved watching this and knowing what KETCHUP CHIPS ARE!!! I just got back from my trip to Toronto, and of course I had the try the Canadian ketchup chips. They were weird, but I love Toronto!! lol love yaaaa❤️❤️❤️ (This is in response to the fake sprayed edged with the red nail polish looking like ketchup chips)
Hi there! I THINK you’re the first person I heard about “Spy Family” from, and if so, thanks SO much! I love it! I am also going to be starting book 5 soon!
'Your Letter' is my most favourite manhwa/graphic novel!!! I read it all on Webtoon back in the days and didn't know they were releasing an English translated physical copy omg!!!!!
I ADORE deckled edges. I think it's because I love anything that looks or feels antique. Thrift books is always my first choice for books but I've definitely gotten a few sticky or just really bad conditions. It's the best $ for me here in the US though.
Actually, migraines are mentioned in Philip Pullman's "Book of Dust", a prequel for Lyra's story! As far as I remember, one of the main characters, a young boy, experiences them. He gets a vision of "auras" which he calls "auroras" due to misspelling - and they help him and guide him throughout his adventures. Oh, and you showed a collection of Pullman's books later in the video! What a nice coincidence 😅
Good morning, Emma! I passed my exams after a long struggle so I treated myself with books and stationery items (absolutely love them). I got Ministry of Time (thanks to you😂), Lost on Me and Blue Sisters. In stationery I got muji pens, A5 notebooks, translucent pen case and printing paper. So glad to see your new video 🫶🏻
Your letter is an amazing manhwa, and its also very short. Its one of these stories that you read real fast but they stick w you forever :( I didnt know they are releasing a hardcopy! Can’t wait to get my hand on one
I'm very excited to see what you will think of "The Discomfort of Evening". The author, who goes by the name Lucas Rijneveld now, is actually originally from the town I am from in The Netherlands. He used to hang out with my older cousin when they were kids/teens, so it's so cool (and also a bit strange) to see his international success nowadays! As to pronouncing his last name, I think it would work the best to use the English "ai" sound for "ij". It's still somewhat different but comes the closest to what it's supposed to sound like in Dutch :).
Hi, Emma! I have 3 questions for you. 1)Do you have any tips for getting out of reading slump? 2)Do you ever thought making video about reading slump? 3)Have you tried Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge? As always thank you very much for everything💚💚💚
I love the dark materials trilogy so much! I read them when I was 11 and I also really enjoyed the hbo show. Pullman is currently two books into a new trilogy set in the same world
I feel like the AC breaking during a heatwave is an universal experience at this point 🤣 I’ve been melting at 40 C while looking at my brand new broken AC
Careful if you think a book might have mold. I haven't had any personal experience but I've heard it can spread to other books. If you see any dark spots on it, best to just throw the book out so the mold doesn't spread to your other books.
emma ur hair looks GORGEOUS
Thank you🥲
Good afternoon, Emma! 😂 Id like to once more put in my vote for the book spider to be named Webster, both in reference to the dictionary as well as being a web/spider pun. It is silly.
I love that so much:’) I’m definitely gonna start calling him that!!
Aw yay 😊❤ I don't know why getting to name a little book spider makes me so happy but it does 😂
Ok that's hilarious
This is why i love Thriftbooks, chaotic
Ya never know what you’re gonna get😂
Emma, those books that smell - put them in a box, or pot with baking soda around it and close it over night. In the morning the smell will be gone❤
thank you so much for the tip I will definitely be trying this!!
Using cat litter also works! 😊
You can return the book with the glittered and nail polished edges. Thrift Books will replace it. I have had no trouble with their customer service people. You have to contact them online first and then they will get back to you. Good Luck. Sorry about your bad day (s).
i love deckled edges. it gives the book an old antique feel 😅
Being sick in summer SUCKS so hard. Smh.
Feels like a scam😭
As someone with COVID right now, can confirm.
I’m sick too 😢
Me too 😢
"It kind of smells like musty God dust" - legendary quote 😂
my anxiety has been so high recently. i have found your videos (and your botm sponsorships!) so comforting and the perfect distraction. thank you, emma!!
right there with you, sending you all the calming vibes and I'm glad these help in any way
I LOVE deckled edges. I am so happy when a book unexpectedly has them. I'm literally keeping a book I don't like because it has them and I bought one edition specifically for them😂
Yes same!!
Seven Days in June also has a MC who suffers from chronic migraines (as well as the author herself) and really explores what that’s like, if you’re interested!!
ooh thank you for letting me know!!
I second this, plus the book is AMAZING
Also that book is just the best adult romance i’ve read.

I don't think it is a children's song.

Nail polish on a book is dastardly 😭
ikr? what kind of a nasty little goblin even thought of doing it?
Nail polish and glitter on a book?? That's just sacrilegious. 😠
Thank you, Emma, for another great video. I hopevhope you feel better soon! 💕💕📚📚
Video idea : When Caroline comes to visit she chooses 10 books from your bookshelf and you must identify them blindfolded through smell.
I love this😂
😂

The tv show of his dark materials is sooo amazing. Great acting and the animal companions are done really well. Really great show and got me so hooked to read the books.
I like the look of deckled edges but I hate trying to turn the pages while reading 😩
Yesss this!!!
Same!! I love how they look but the touch doesn’t do it for me.
You might want to check the TW and controversies with Emily A. Duncan before you read Wicked Saints! It was really atmospheric and the wintery vibes were great, but just wanted to warn you about that!
I love deckled edges. They're just perfectly unperfect😊
Have you read the Left Hand of Darkness? It takes place entirely on a planet called Winter, I think you’d love the ice and snow descriptions
I grew up with puff the magic dragon, and now that I’m older I cry when I read it 😭 it’s a great book!
As an architect, and an avid reader, it’s fun seeing you read architecture related books!!
I like the edges as the remind me of really old books 😊🌸
12:27 I feel that pain very, very, deeply. I've been burned twice by second hand sellers. One I had ordered was listed as great condition. When I opened it, it was super sticky. Thriftbooks my beloved 🥰 them and abebooks have my whole heart. Such a good alternative to amazon used books.
Amazon actually owns AbeBooks
I watched the BBC TV version of "This dark materials" and I really enjoyed it 😁
Oh my god yes!! His dark materials, the show ended and honestly its the best book to screen adaptation, i love it 💙
just as I was seating down to study without anything to procrastinate on lol, great timing :))
I got you☺️
His dark materials is my fav fantasy trilogy and I think you will love it! It’s right up your alley!
damn you unlocked a core childhood memory of being obsessed with the golden compass movie! i didn't know it was based on a book, i just found it randomly on tv once and processed to be obsessed over it for a few months, only to then completely forget about it until now
I love thrift books so much! As Long as the Lemon trees grow and His Dark Materials series are amazing! I wanna read Your Letter. Great haul, Emma! 💖

About that sweet smell from old books, recently I read that this kind of smell (something like vanilla) is due to paper decomposition (celullose and chemicals on it). Sometimes it could be sweet, sometimes it could be fruity. Hope it helps. 😊
I love the smelling addition of book hauls! We see the cover and read the descriptions, but the smells add up so much more to the experience :)
Emma, your book from the cleveland library, reminded me that my massive oak bookcase has a label stating property of

Omggg the bionicles. My brother had them as a kid so I loved playing with them along with him
literally just ordered some books! perfect timing. hope you feel better soon
Haha thank you lovely!!
Love the decked edges! I collect Penguin Deluxe Editions and I love the pages of them
Puff the Magic Dragon brought back a memory I didn't know I had! Had that exact version growing up!
It sounds amazing, I would love to read that
Can I just say: your ads are always incredible! You put so much work into them, they're a delight.
EDIT: omg the nail polish book
get well soon, emma!! summer sickness is the worst. i wish you all the luck to survive the heat ❤
haha thank you I'll need it!!
Omg when the architecture book quoted Han Byung-chul I gasped - I just read his work “non-things” this month, it was so so mind-blowingly eye-opening. It’s a philosophical yet practical essay on why the era of smart phones has made us lonely. I think you would really like it ❤

that is so kind, thank you - and yes I would love to get around to Pachinko!
Wow. That copy of Don Quijote looks so cool ❤.
I had no idea Puff the Magic Dragon was a book. I only knew of the song, which I adore. I need that book now.
Summer colds are miserable! Feel better! I really enjoyed your book haul and your reactions 😄. There are some beautiful ones in the haul. I truly love Puff the Magic Dragon. Thrift books is a goldmine for all the detective books that I can’t find anywhere else like Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew or Beverly Gray or others
The discomfort of evening is one of my favourite books! Yes, it’s really disturbing but so nostalgic and emotional too
I just started the video and I have to say you look amazing with the curled hair and the jewerly
thank you so much🩵🩵
Don Quixote is wonderful. The Edith Grossman translation is the way to go.
hey emma...it's quite early in the morning here and i woke up feeling sick & this video really comforted me.
tbh all of your videos feel like a close friend talking to you...thank you so much for being my light in these stressful days of my life
p.s. that hair slaps!
book of the month thing is so SMART because i couldn't care less, i honestly always skip, but i watched the whole thing! it was so entertaining.
very very clever
Omg I've had The Discomfort of Evening in my book case for agessssss and I've never heard anyone talk about it! Definitely makes me want to pick it up, really excited to read from a Dutch author!
Hi Emma, I've read The Discomfort of Evening this year and it was so good! It's really sad and I think shows childhood trauma in a very poetic and disturbing way. But I loved it! 😅
lmao at the nail polished edges. thank you for smelling each and describing the smell
Yesss Bionicles was so fun to play with as a kid with my younger brothers! I didn’t know there were books though 😮
Emma your hair looks so wonderful!
Oh thank you!
I've never heard of the Bionicle toys and book series before your video.
oh my gosh i LOVED Your Letter when it was first releasing on webtoon! It’s soo cool to see it being published i highly recommend it. Felt a lot of feelings because i related so much to the main characters😭
I LOVE book hauls, you just made my day! 💗
I'm honoured
emma!! bro puff the magic dragon made me smile so hard🥹and i know exactlyyyy what smell ur talking about!
OMG when you pulled out normal people i got so excited because i just bought a thrifted copy yesterday myself!! it'll be my first ever sally rooney too, so, double excited and a bit nervous since there's always that divisive opinion over the writing style. my copy smells fine but it's a bit bent and waterlogged so i'm just keeping it pressed until i'm less annoyed.
nail polish as edge spray had me cracking up though... what a choice 😭
i hope you get well soon emma!!
I really enjoy the uneven edges "deckled" I've never heard them called that before. 😊
I hated and loved the discomfort of evening, I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this! Also from a Canadian perspective, as I'm from Belgium and more closely know Dutch culture, it will be interesting to hear what you make of it 😅
Get well soon, Emma! You poor, unlucky girl :c
Let's hope that the summer gods will be kinder to you for the rest of it.
You've just sold me on "Cinder". I love "Sailor Moon"!
Omg I loved watching this and knowing what KETCHUP CHIPS ARE!!! I just got back from my trip to Toronto, and of course I had the try the Canadian ketchup chips. They were weird, but I love Toronto!! lol love yaaaa❤️❤️❤️
(This is in response to the fake sprayed edged with the red nail polish looking like ketchup chips)
Glad to see you (seemingly) feeling better mentally!
Hi there! I THINK you’re the first person I heard about “Spy Family” from, and if so, thanks SO much! I love it! I am also going to be starting book 5 soon!
I was absolutely obsessed with the old animated Puff the Magic Dragon short. I think our tape had that followed by the Care Bears movie.
'Your Letter' is my most favourite manhwa/graphic novel!!! I read it all on Webtoon back in the days and didn't know they were releasing an English translated physical copy omg!!!!!
Crazy because I just finished the HBO His Dark Materials today and wow, it’s SO good.
I ADORE deckled edges. I think it's because I love anything that looks or feels antique.
Thrift books is always my first choice for books but I've definitely gotten a few sticky or just really bad conditions. It's the best $ for me here in the US though.
Thrift Books is amazing! As a teacher, it is a great way to stock my classroom library!
Dear Lord! What an awful set from Thrift. I'm so sorry. I've never had any books with smells, poor quality, and nail polished edges.
I avoid deckled edges as much as possible. 🙅♀️
Hope you feel better quickly.
Actually, migraines are mentioned in Philip Pullman's "Book of Dust", a prequel for Lyra's story! As far as I remember, one of the main characters, a young boy, experiences them. How high we go in the dark is in my top ten favorite books of all time- I can't wait for your review omg

So glad to see your new video 🫶🏻
you could definitely sand down those pages on wicked saints because wow
Your letter is an amazing manhwa, and its also very short. Its one of these stories that you read real fast but they stick w you forever :(
I didnt know they are releasing a hardcopy! Can’t wait to get my hand on one
OMG!!! I used to play with Bionicles! I think I used to have that book you were holding!
I'm very excited to see what you will think of "The Discomfort of Evening". The author, who goes by the name Lucas Rijneveld now, is actually originally from the town I am from in The Netherlands. The wolf in the whale is a nice wintery book set in northern canada i think you would enjoy
