When I see this game, I don't know whom I should cheer for. I went to LMU, but Shaq was my favorite player with the Lakers. Well, basketball was great back then.
I love how they have the 45 second shot clock in the bottom left corner. It could've been a 7 second shot clock and it wouldn't have affected this game.
@@arisdelis1 The drugs made him sluggish, as was evident in their game at St. Joe's a month earlier. And Hank, unfortunately, made the decision to cut his dosage way down so he could play at his best level.
I was a Sophmore in college in North Carolina and remember watching this game in the boarding house. This LSU team eventually lost to Georgia Tech in the NCAA tournament.
I remember that Georgia Tech game. I think LSU jumped out to almost a twenty-point lead in the early minutes, but Ga Tech started chipping away and eventually won.
Your right JB, sweet move by Mahmoud(Chris Jackson) at 2:28. Gathers thought he had it but was like WTF. LMU plays speed scoring, unlike LSU play more polished speed scoring. I remember watching this from home, this was sophomore year in High school.
Believe it or not, Westhead instituted a slowdown offense with the Lakers after winning the championship in 1980 with Jack McKinney's faster offense. THE SYSTEM! HIT YOUR SPOTS!
The last 15 seconds of regulation was insane. Lowry attacks the basket with 12 seconds left (way too much time in a tie game). Gathers gets the rebound and puts up an awful fade away air ball with 9 seconds left. Then LSU puts up a half court shot with more than 5 seconds left. Absolutely ZERO time awareness by both teams.
Shaq, Chris Jackson, Stanley Roberts - this LSU team should have gone DEEP into the NCAA tournament in 1990. Dale Brown was an amazing recruiter, but never could get LSU that championship because was just wasn’t a good coach. This was the team that should have done it.
Shaq said there were a lot of egos on that team. Shaq wanted to do his thing. Stanley Roberts wanted to do his thing. And Chris Jackson wanted to do his thing. And they just couldn't gel together. And unfortunately, this group was only together for one season. If they could have stayed together maybe one more year, and worked as cohesive unit, they could have been in the running for a national championship.
Exactly correct. I get so angry that Im this good as a coach & can't get a chance while they hire this type of knuckle head. 3 pros ,& lost every year. The worst coach ever. Dean Smith next
I had just graduated from LSU in December ‘89 when my wife and I moved down to New Orleans for work... otherwise I would have been at this game. Watched it on TV, it was just amazing. Still my favorite college basketball game of all time. Dale Brown was such a great coach but Bobby Knight always seemed go have his number, unfortunately...
I’m bout to make the best RUclips video to this game. Stay tuned, I’ll be done probably end of the month, and if you want, I’ll post the link to it. Always been fascinated with Loyola Marymount
I mean yes and no. He missed his best chance to win it all with Shaq but took the program to heights it'd never seen before and really hasn't seen since
AVC IV True, but that was one year - an isolated incident. When Dale Brown was coach, he got LSU some amazing talent and they were in the NCAA regularly. The program hasn’t had that level of sustained success since. Dale Brown was an amazing recruiter but a poor coach, unfortunately.
@@jonnychingas5757 The only reasons LSU made the Final Four in 2006 were (a) Glen Davis and Tyrus Thomas and (b) J.J. Reddick and the rest of his teammates choked vs. LSU in the Sweet 16.
One of the best games I’ve ever seen.
Still, one of the absolute greatest and star studded basketball games ever...
This tempo is unreal, especially compared to today's game.
How bout ANY era. Paul Westhead had LMU playing at an UNREAL pace.
@@paulsonj72 Yes RUN-N-GUN
Wow! Gathers was unbelievable in this game. Every kind of shot imaginable What a treat! R.I.P. Hank
I got to see Gathers in our gym at La Salle University. He was the real deal.
I saw Hank Gathers when Loyola Marymount came to Cincinnati to play against Xavier. He was a great player.
Yes he was, and now my Aunt Lucille is up there with him
I watched LMU on the west coast before they blew up and would lose my breath just watching them. Kimble, Gathers, and Fryer & Lowery were phenomenal.
A young Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul Rauf), Bo Kimble, and The Late Hank Gathers.
Stanley Roberts too
I had the pleasure of watching this game live, great seats. Once I find the ticket stub I will post. Sad what happened to Hank Gathers.
The tempo of this game is breathtaking
Look what happened last month at the NBA All-Star Game. Over 200 points in 48 minutes! The East team did it.
This is hands down the craziest college basketball game I’ve ever seen and I don’t think it’s close.
You should see LMU vs. Oregon State.
@@louishamilton9648 Oregon St didn’t have the star power like LSU
@@dd212NYC l agree, but in THAT GAME, the pace was frenetic.
Such a great game...All that talent on the floor...whew
Glad I grew up on this brand of college hoops. We will never have this again.
LMU average 121 points per game is crazy

Hank shot free throws left handed... unbelievable. Would have liked to see LMU vs Flying Illini
@Matthew Gentit UNLV had way more talent
That big guy on LSU is a beast. He must've went on to become a superstar in the pros. Stanley Roberts is his name. #53
Gathers died 28 days after this game.
yeah- still a little bummed about that...
HG had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, very scary. and was on and off his meds...

Eugene Blackman And in the second round, too. Dale Brown was a great recruiter but his coaching stopped LSU from getting a championship.

LSU was ranked #2 in the preseason polls and promptly lost its second game to Kansas, which elevated Roy Williams' coaching status.
@@pomerlain8924 Chris Jackson barely made the required ACT score to be admitted. If it had been a few years later, he goes straight to the NBA.

I doubt it. The game was joined in progress even in Louisiana.

LMU wouldn't have had a prayer vs. UNLV with Hank Gathers.

So fast paced
Refs gave LMU no love.....
These were neutral refs so you can't claim SEC bias. And why would they give Dale Brown any love? Refs hated him. So your argument does not wash.
That was the worst game Jeff Fryer played. If he has even an average game, LMU wins going away. He was just off that night.
