I have the original Neo flair. It’s fun but a lot of steps for small yield of coffee. I’m between a boiler machine and the flair 58+. Thank you for confirming my suspicions that the 58 is the next best step for me.

I'm a few weeks in and I have no disagreements with your review. I'm a bit new to the espresso game although I dabbled a few years back with the ROK. The Flair 58 is a dream. My only complaint, albeit a small one, is that the plunger has a tendency to rotate slightly, creep if you will, with each shot pulled. Eventually, the slot lines up with the lever interface and it disengages. Sometimes that happens on the upstroke and sometimes the whole thing falls out when you remove the portafilter. Flair provides a key to rotate the plunger from time to time to keep this from happening but you have to keep your eye on it every few days, depending upon how many shots you pull.

If they make a new version of this flair 58 with a better implementation of the heating element, I might be interested in switching to a manual espresso machine..
The power brick is an issue, but also that device for setting the temperature look like a joke, it needs to be less ugly and integrated in the body of the machine IMO.

  • @ChristopherMichaelR

I picked one up today because of the labor day sale. Ultimately im picking one up because of my journey into light roasts. I've found the need to have pressure profiling. I have a modded gaggia classic at 6.5bar, bambino plus w/ dimmer mod, and picopresso. I liked pulling shots on the pico but hated the workflow. I was getting significantly better shots than the GC and BP. I was getting a lot more nuance even though i had less control. The bambino just doesn't get hot enough for light roasted coffees. But I had great success with medium or dark roasted coffees. Because of that, it is on the chopping block. To be straight, there are some light roasts that need to have that control. Hitting the puck at straight 6.5 bar and going 1:2 or 1:3 doesn't taste as good as the pico. The only differences I can think of is the control of preinfusion and the flow control.
edit: I mainly drink iced lattes so no need to steam milk really. I was contemplating about keeping the bambino plus as a milk steamer but most likely I will be selling it.

I love my Flair 58 (love my Pro 2, as well): it has a little bit of a learning curve, of course, but boy does it pull good shots. I combine it with a Bellman for lattes. Works great with my Acaia Luna (I use a Pyxis for my Pro2). VST or IMS scale helps a lot.
I am probably going to get a Smart Pressure Profiler, which essentially gives it the same sort of control a Decent has, when combined with the Lunar.

I would consider it more if someone had provided better options for detached milk steamers, but what's on the market atm is either over $1000 or is really inconvenient. Not sure why no one has thought to provide a detached, electric, steam wand in a compact, affordable, package, it shouldn't be that hard. It would make buying someone like the Flair a no-brainer for someone that also likes milk drinks.

    • @chadgregory9037
      @chadgregory9037 2 года назад

      @@D4PPZ456 i second this notion.
I feel like i could engineer a thermoblock type unit that would heat very fast, and create a very nice steam pressure that would also be able to be adjustable with programming on a simple control chip. Adjusting temp and water flow rate to adjust steam speed and temp.
It's a very simple machine, the most "clutter" would be the redundancies for safety and preservation.
It would be so simple using a check valve and a vibe pump using a dimmer style control for setting minimum pressure to maintain when fresh water needs replenished on the bottom side of the thermoblock. this way pressure can form in the block, but also be able to receive fresh and perhaps pre-heated water to maintain proper ratios of water/steam/temp in the thermoblock
I would also like to imagine that using machine learning models (that I know how to code) with data gathered it would be feasible to make a good unit that could easily steam non-stop for like 5 whole minutes or more. (I just say 5 minutes cause thats a longgg time)

Espresso quality-wise, I'm not sure I can think of one... as an overall package with capabilities to steam milk, the Lelit Bianca is a great package at around $3k

Acaia Lunar is the best option. Expensive though

Personally, I was really turned off by Flair's aggressive gifting of the 58 to the people on YT and IG...it just rang as really gimmicky and sad. You could see so many of the gift receivers were smitten by getting free stuff that they didn't critically look at the device. If they did lobby criticism it was couched in almost apologetic way as not offend Flair.

I mean, it depends on the the RUclipsr. I can't think of any in the coffee space that would shy away from giving genuine feedback just from receiving a review unit. We receive review products all the time. The big names right now are pretty blunt and honest

Nope! Piece of junk. Poor construction and potentially unsafe. Very strict return policies. Flair insists they’ve made an impeccable unit. If you like spending money on the mediocre that looks more cool that functional, go ahead. Take my advice and stay away! Spend your money on a real machine and with a company that is more reputable.

Impressively far from the truth 👍
Sorry you appear to have had a bad experience, but Flair units are great, especially this one.
