@@billytuchscher yeah dude, specially for taking off, bottom turning and basic top turns, helps with mobility and keeping your body ready if you are land locked too. I’m an intermediate surfer and showed it to some of my advanced friends who surf mexpipe and they also found it very helpful
life was more fun back then, before the internet made the world so small. The 'waving your arms all over the place' comment from papa totally makes sense. Brad had the most relaxed arms when surfing (later on) - elbows glued to hips during cutty - guessing that comment did it. Curren's surfing definitely came from that place of 'understanding' waves, flow, and power. Not sure that we still have power surfers like Curren and Gerlach, but maybe it's partially the equipment getting so much smaller.
@@Winker. - not in the same way imo. Both incredible, regardless. He just had more innate wave knowledge than others. He wasn't thinking about the type of turn he was going to do, he was thinking about the one three turns down, and just flowed it the whole way. And when there was a section to hit, he'd really nail the bottom turn, which is key, oc, then gouge the crap out of it. Probably nobody had bottom turn close to curren thus far. I'd say that's pretty much certain. The guy never did airs, and it didn't matter. It wasn't his thing. He was all about flow (and show)
@@jeffg4686 With respect i am a huge fan of Currens but also we have to consider Occy and his backhand circa 84 as well as Irons for incredible skill and read of a wave i think some surfers are up there with Curren but perhaps none had his flow, as for power some have surpassed it , just my opinion too..... As for your comment " innate wave knowledge" that is very valid and an insightful comment i agree Cheers.
@@SurfSplendor just now found you (or better put, the algorithm served the podcast up), loved the Gerlach interview. Proved that surfing can get as deep as you want to go.
Dont get me wrong, Brad is a very interesting dude, but he should take a beat and let the host ask some questions instead of just hijacking the entire interview.
First half of this, about Gerlachs Dad was fantastic...tho the wave ki thing is all a bit ridiculous..It kind of seems like hes trying to make some cash selling knowledge that hes making up in his own head..Teaching 'surfing'..is not a thing.
Ah hang on....then he goes on to say he could teach John John, who surfs a million time better than Gerlach ever, ever has.. how he could improve with his knowledge....This blokes a buffoon.
I don't know, I train on land and it's proven beneficial. Even found that Tai Chi improves my flow and balance. If your serious about surfing, and waves don't come, TRAIN.
@@moodybot801 I'd reckon after 6 straight seasons in the islands, trips to Indonesia every year...and trips to Tahiti, before the age of 35...i have a fair idea..I'm not the best surfer on the planet...tho I can say that balancing on a cushion in my living room would not help to improve mine or anyones surfing one single bit..Good luck with that tho..
Does anyone remember the Jack Johnson video where Ben Stiller paddled out and surfed just like Gerlach...?
Brad is such a G, been doing wave ki for over a year and it has been massively helpful
Yeah? it's got me curious.
