  • I'm changing the transmission fluid on a 2004 Suzuki Forenza. The transmission is an automatic ZF 4HP16 transmission designed for use in a vehicle with front-wheel drive and a transverse engine. The transmission fluid recommended by Suzuki is Esso LT71141.
    However, in this video I'm using Valvoline Max Life ATF. Valvoline recommends this product for use in 2004-2008 Forenza; 2005-2008 Reno. Here is the Valvoline link:
    www.carquestprofessionals.com/...
    Here is the link for the service manual for the NUBIRA/LACETTI (Suzuki marketed a rebadged Lacetti as the Forenza and Reno beginning in the United States in 2004):
    lacetti.com.ua/chevy-man/EN/do...
    Here is another manual:
    lacetti.com.ua/chevy-man/EN/do...
    Here is the Optra manual (another rebadged NUBIRA/LACETTI):
    file:///G:/pictures/car%20pictures/pats%20suzuki/transmission/-ZF4HP16-Optra.html
    5/16" equals approximately 8 mm (or 7.9375 mm). You would be able to use either size, 8 mm or 5/16", square pipe plug socket to remove the drain plug and fill plug.

    Hi, thank you for your videos. Did you try replacing the transmission filter? I thought that like in other car models, the filter is just closed to the transmission pan but it seams that it is necessary to remove the transmission to replace the filter. Do you recommend to replace the filter? thanks

    Couple questions. So I am changing my transmission fluid, or attempting to but no place has the specified tool that they need. The car is a 2006 Suzuki Forenza Wagon. I am going to try and take it into my own hands. I am having transmission issues I feel like so I just want to change it. What is the specific tool? My owners manual doesn't say. Is it the same as the 2004

    As black as that oil was, I would suggest doing at least one more if not a couple more changes after about 3k miles. With just a fluid change, you don't get the fluid out of the torque converter. The right way to do it, would be to have it flushed. My dad has an 06 Reno with just under 200K miles and he gets the transmission flushed every 30k miles with the OEM recommended synthetic fluid. He also uses synthetic engine oil and gets it changed every 3k miles, I told him to have them save the old oil and I'll use it in my car, but the oil change place won't let him take it. :)

    This might be an odd question, but is this the same transmission as the one in a Suzuki Esteem GLX Wagon from the US? It seems like it is. I’m just looking up stuff to help me when I change the ATF from this car. Going to look up under the car to check if I see a similar drain bolt location and stuff.

      This car is a GM/Daewoo product, nothing to do with Suzuki other than the emblem. If you want to be sure check what fluid is used in a 2006 Daewoo Lacetti. That is what this car really is.

      Use the same stuff I'm using in this video: MaxLife ATF. Or you could get the OEM fluid called Esso LT 71141, which costs more. Valvoline says you're OK to use their product (MaxLIfe) on this list:

    i have a 2006 suzuki forenza with the 4HP16 transmission and this transmission it's picky about the oil you use the original Esso LT71141 is a long lasting synthetic oil and the factory recomendation is not to do a oil change unless the transmission has been work hard. the first time i did this transmission oil change to my suzuki a use castrol transmax multivihicle transmission fluid it says in the back that replaces LT71141 yes it does but only the type that is use in mitsubishi trans. well after a year wend i decided tho check the oil it was burn black in a bad way i did a little research on the transmission itself and found out that it requires fully synthetic long life trans oil and this oil is not cheap or easy to find were i live. well went to autozone and found in there synthetic trans oil that is close to the original its proline multi vehicle low vicosity full synthetic atf it covers 5HP LT1141 i now its a different trans but its the updated version and it uses the same atf oil and so far i have inspected the oil in 3 consecutive Mount and i have no problems so far its been 10 mounts now and the trans its working fine.

      @JA-rn5qv 2 года назад

      This is a ZF transmission. ZF4HP16 to be exact. They specify you can use Dexron III, IV, or Esso LT71141. Castrol Transmax is not fully compatible with those fluids except in very particular cases, but Valvoline MaxLife Fully Synthetic ATF is fully compatible, so you can use a Dexron III, VI or Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic ATF. I have used all of these with this transmission (not the Castrol) and the Valvoline MaxLife has given the best performance/results.

  • @Norsology
    @Norsology 3 года назад

    If I remember correctly those Suzuki manual gear boxes use 75W90 API GL-4 oil, NOT API GL-5 oil. If 4x4 the transfer boxes and the rear differentials take 75W90 API GL-5. GL-5 has more HP additives than GL-4 but also additives that can degrade the copper synchronizers found in those manual gear boxes. You should make sure which type is correct before proceeding. Look in the Instruction Manual. Either use a pure GL-4 or at least a GL-4/5 oil. The oil You used was pure GL-5. The API rating is more important than the viscosity rating which can be chosen according to specific needs like driving pattern and temperature ranges. For most people with a small 4x4 manual transmission Suzuki a 75W90 API GL-4/5 will thus fill both transmission box, transferbox and rear differential.

    • @JA-rn5qv
      @JA-rn5qv 2 года назад

      Many Suzuki manual gear boxes do indeed use GL-4, however the car in this video is a GM/Daewoo POS, nothing "Suzuki" about it other than the emblems. This GM/Daewoo may also use GL-4 as well, but that would have to be checked in the service manual rather than following the Suzuki norm since what works for an actual Suzuki may not be correct for a GM/Daewoo vehicle.

      Everything is going good with the transmission. Sometime all it takes to cure light transmission problems is to perform a simple drain-and-fill. No issues so far. I think that Valvoline Max Life ATF is great stuff for those specific types of transmissions but I can't say how MaxLife is for other transmissions.

    • @angelito1906

      mine´s its a forenza 2007 with only 58k miles, i was reading the owner´s manual it says no problems no change the transmission oil, mine´s not giving me problems but a question do you think its time to change the oil?

    • @MileTune-Up
      @MileTune-Up  7 лет назад +5

      I would definitely perform a 'drain and fill' on that ZF transmission before 90,000 miles; preferably every 30,000 miles if you want to keep your Forenza running good for a long time. Suzuki tells us not to change the transmission fluid, that it's good for "life", and yet they're warranty expires after 5 yrs or 100,000 miles. But, do what you feel is best. Good luck.

    It really sucks that newer cars aren't coming with trans dip sticks and a proper drain and fill location on the cars these days.. They really want the trans to blow up.. So you gotta pay $2000 to $4000 for a new one, Really sucks.. I know that's what they want.. I thank God I have a proper Dip stick and easily accessible drain plug.. The model's and years after mine don't come with a dipstick.. Guess I got lucky on that.. Because I have a CVT, and I do a drain and fill of 5 quarts every June, right before it gets super hot.. I do it about every 10,000 or once a year in June.. CVT fluid is more for protection than anything else, It works more like lubrication to the trans the same as engine Oil, and if you let it get Burnt up and black like engine oil it will blow up.. People think what I do is over kill But U wouldn't wait 75,000 to 100,000 miles to change your Oil.. You'd do it every 3000 to 5000, Same thing with these CVT's.. People say to do a drain and fill on your CVT every 35,000.. But i believe the older it gets the more often you should do it.. Really every time you get an extra $100 Bucks, Buy 5 quarts just to have it around..

    I assume you didn't see you drain 4 ltrs of fluid and pour 3! This oil change is made only when the car is lifted up high,the oil SHOULD be hot and you first pour 3 ltrs,then start the engine,put it in D and then change all the gears sequentially, At the end you leave it in D and pour the rest 1ltr. The job is done! In the correct way! I had several cars with that kind of transaxle. I assure you - that's how it is supposed to be done. Otherwise you risk pouring less fluid into the transaxle and the following consequeces.

  • @AndrewFord
