  • A great day out chasing a late season salmon on the Stornoway Angling Association River Creed. I made my way up to Anton's pool. Anton was a club member who died recently and has since had a pool named after him and I did wonder if he might not look down upon me and get me a fish. Almost immediately I hooked into a grilse that went completely mad and, in due course, Anton had the last laugh.

    Hi Pal. I really enjoy your videos and am so jealous of the fishing you’ve got on the island, those little intimate rivers are always so fun to fish. As much as I love your videos, and I realise you speak a lot of good info so not much time is wasted, it would be great to see some shorter ones in the 10-20 minute range. I do like hearing your observations but I’m an impatient bugger and often wanna see the action compressed a bit! Cheers anyway and keep it up 👍🏼

      You are absolutely right in that most of my videos probably have 10 minutes, or less, of actual content. However, the truth is I started making the videos basically as "holiday snaps" so I could send a link to a few friends. There was never any intention of attracting a general audience. So basically I make the videos for myself and my own amusement and, as a result, they tend to be much too long. I don't wish to appear arrogant but with them being personal holiday snaps they are probably going to stay too long simply because there is stuff I remember about the day out that I like to have in the video but that, I appreciate, means nothing to you. Maybe I should think about doing a long and a short version but, being honest, I'm probably to lazy for that.

      Yes Anton was a character and worked hard for the club but on this day he got the last laugh :-) That fish was completely crazy and I am certain it was hooked under the chin rather than in the mouth and this was why I was rather relaxed about landing it and was trying not to net it etc. I was more annoyed about the one I dropped a few minutes previously as it felt like a fairly good take and that it was on and then it wasn't!

      The walking between the Junction and the loch is fairly hard going but the walking up as far as the junction pool is actually quite easy. Once you get above the Junction it pretty much needs serious water in the river to be fishable so you aren't really missing much.

The truth is that I initially started posting videos simply so I could link some friends to them and I never suspected that I would get "subscribers" or indeed anything more than a few people I knew viewing the videos. I'm really pleased if people enjoy the videos, especially in the winter when we are all waiting to get out again, but I have no objectives or plans at all for the channel and I guess most people will get fed up with me doing the same thing and fishing the same places.

    How many association waters are there on the island, and how much does it cost to fish there for a season, assuming you want to fish the better rivers and lochs?

    • @caorach3354
      @caorach3354  Год назад +1

      From the perspective of visitors there are realistically 3 main associations on the island with the Stornoway Angling Association (who do permits for this river) probably the major one. The Gress River, where I'm often seen in my videos, is another. Day tickets vary between about £10 and £25 and you can get a year on the Creed for around £100, I think a season on Gress is about £25. Usefully the various associations have a mix of water, so the Fideach AA have an estuary fishery, where salmon and sea trout get piled up in low water, and a remote loch where big sea trout hide. Gress have a mixture of "saltings" and spate river so in low water the fish tend to be trapped down on the saltings and then in a spate they run the river sometimes to pools many miles out the moor. The Creed needs water to get the fish out of the sea but once they can run the river then there is about 4 miles of fishable water and two lochs, so if the river is low the lochs can often provide some sport providing there was enough water for fish to get in during the main run. Trout fishing is normally considered to be "free" though some places do charge for it but there are tens of years worth of free trout lochs to be fished. We also have a goodly number of private estate waters and prices there vary greatly with the legendary Grimersta Estate waters probably being at the top of the pile. Many of the estates will, if they don't have fishing guests, let the occasional day to visiting anglers and that is a luck of the draw type of thing. If you were intending to come then it is worth talking to Donnie, the angling promotion officer, as he may know of places that have days to offer etc. donnie@ohft.org.uk Almost always the problem is deciding where to go rather than being short of places to go to.

      @@caorach3354 go raibh maith agat. I'll hit donnie up when I have a better idea of when I can get there. i reckon i'll be giver the grimersta waters a miss though. a day there costs more than my entire set up!

    • @caorach3354
      @caorach3354  Год назад

      @@thetattooedangler Do talk to Donnie as, apart from anything else, my taste in fishing is somewhat unusual as I don't like boat fishing and do like remote spots, even spots where people say a fish has never been caught. So Donnie will give a different perspective and that is useful as his suggestions might suit you better than anything I'd suggest. Donnie has fished all his life and genuinely has walked to almost every loch on the island plus he is in touch with all the estates so he knows if anyone has days free etc. Grimersta is a fantastic place to fish but I also understand that it is extremely expensive. It is part of the history of UK salmon fishing so it is nice to be able to say you've fished it but the money you'd spend for a day would get you a full year of Lewis fishing including a few days here and there on some of the less expensive estates.

  • @pauljohnsontwonoviceangler6170

    Great video. We really enjoyed that from in front of our log fire in Durham on a cold February day! Anton's Pool looks a nice spot. Can an angler fish a pool all day or is it expected one moves on after an hour or so? What is the protocol? I have noted from this and other videos you like to keep moving as opposed to staying still and trying 10 different flies.

    • @caorach3354
      @caorach3354  Год назад

      The usual procedure with a salmon pool is that the angler takes a step downstream with each cast however when the pools are quiet and there's no one else about you can take your time. I've got to say that there probably isn't any point standing casting over the same water for an hour as you are searching for a taking fish so it is often and advantage to cover as much water as possible rather than to cover the same water many times. Staying in the one place for an hour probably means you are covering empty water, or disinterested fish, when you could be moving on to find a fish that wants your fly. Sometimes I'd go over the same water a few times if I change tactics inbetween, so maybe I'd go down it with a double on a floater, then do the same on a sinker, and then go down again with a conehead fly on the sinker. We have an angler here who pretty much uses the same fly all the time and he does at least as well as everyone else however I have found that a particular colour seems to work on a given day so I wouldn't like to be restricted to one fly. With salmon I must confess that a taking fish will often grab anything it sees so fishing one pattern might not be a huge disadvantage but I do think that changing colour sometimes gives you an edge.

      @@caorach3354 Thanks for the detailed reply. Great information. Jackie and I have never tried salmon fishing yet but we would love to have a go. Unfortunately, its a bit expensive in this area and we need the more expensive environment agency fishing licence. Scotland is great as there isn't an environment agency fishing licence. Obviously, there are expensive rivers like the Tweed and Dee. But on Lewis it seems reasonably priced. Have you a video on the same river for trout? Thanks.

    • @caorach3354
      @caorach3354  Год назад

      @@pauljohnsontwonoviceangler6170 We don't fish the rivers for trout as generally speaking the trout in the rivers are very tiny so pretty much all trout fishing is done in the lochs with the rivers reserved for salmon and sea trout. Salmon fishing can be very expensive on Lewis but it depends where you go and the River Creed, in this video, is usually about £25 per day or £100 for a year. The Gress River, that appears in some other videos, is about £10 for a day. This is good value salmon fishing and many people think that the Creed in particular is probably the best value association fishing in Scotland, it is only the fact that you have to get on a ferry to fish it that saves us from being over run. The other big advantage with most of our fishing is that it doesn't require wading, there are few trees so standard overhead casting works nearly everywhere, and most of it is done with trout rods so if you have a 7 weight trout rod that's maybe a bit longer at 10 feet or more then you are good to go salmon fishing. The River Nairn, just south of Inverness, is also great value in my view and saves on a ferry trip though it will require wading and Spey type casting in many places but it would be an option for you if you wanted a day at salmon at more reasonable money.

      The River Creed is run by the Stornoway Angling Association and you can get a season ticket (associate membership) for £100 and a day ticket for £26. Membership provides fishing on the river and associated salmon/sea trout lochs plus trout fishing on about 14 different lochs, some with boats. Probably the most productive pools on the river are down in the Castle Grounds which is easily accessible with paths etc. however I prefer to go up the river to the rather more remote spots so all my videos are made up there. If the river is a little on the low side then you can always fish the lochs and you can fish from boats or the bank, Clachan is right by the road but Ois requires a bit of a walk if you wish to fish from the bank. If boat fishing then a ghillie would be an extremely worthwhile investment and if you are interested in that then let me know. The SAA site is here: syangling.com/
