Those were outstanding picks, and cool small towns. A perfect way to end your video. And as always, thank you for sharing your adventures. Keep on rolling along.
Of so many of the “Colorado small town” videos I’ve seen & always hoping in secret desperation that my hometown of La Veta would appear & yours is the 1st one to include it! So thank you for that!! My family owns the gas station right at the rail road tracks which you can see on the far right at 10:49. My Dad & Brother run it. I don’t have to say what my favorite town is 😂 I also have family in Alamosa which you might have driven thru depending on how far west you went on 160. I went to college there as well. Beautiful country & I miss it!
I agree with Walsenburg as #1 on this list. The whole downtown looks clean and well kept, most of the spaces looked occupied. Plus, it's so colorful with the murals and buildings painted assorted colors.
Love this! I've rushed on the interstates too much and your videos AND your Maps app download have inspired me to slow way down and take the backroads .. what we used to call The Blue Highways on the old maps. I am loving discovering places in The Great Plains region (as a start) and quirky one-of-a-kind Wow's along the way. What a hoot and what a celebration of the American Spirit. THERE ARE WONDERFUL PEOPLE OUT THERE. THANK YOU.
Another great video. I'm not going to pick a favorite, I always love all the towns you visit 😊 Beautiful drive, enjoyed the views. Fun fact: tumble weeds are not native to North America. They are thought to have arrived with a shipment of Flax seed from Russia in the 1870s. Always enjoy when you include an animal or two in the outtakes. Safe travels and GOD bless
I just cannot rank them either. They all have their history and we're home to people. I thought when I saw the tumbleweed that he should of played a short excerpt from the old song "Drifting Along with the Tumbling Tumbleweed". And I thought what a poor area that they had no death go rounds into tate!
Thank you so much for the vote for Walsenburg! We love it here, so happy to hear you liked it too. Next time you are in town, come to GubGubs pizza and ice cream, corner of 7th and Main. 😃
Another great video sir. I think they’re all great in their own way. Speaking of La Veta, we went there a number of years ago to see some western music artists sing. Not sure if it’s still operating but we took the train to close to La Veta pass where there’s a siding and an Amphitheater. Great views and great show. Great place to hear Michael Martin Murphy sing Wildfire! Anyway, the trip west and then south into New Mexico is beautiful as well. And you have to mention the very unique mountains and terrain around and straight south out of La Veta. Thanks for sharing and the memories!
Fowler! The downtown is decorated and well maintained. And pretty big for such a small town. Cold day. I saw the temperature in Cheyenne Wells at the bank was 25F. Great video. Love all those places. I grew up in extreme SW Kansas as a second generation. My dad said, when he was a kid in 1940s, all the farm kids and parents came to town on Saturday. These downtowns were hopping on Saturdays. In the winter, they went to the movie theater which was something like 15 cents. In the summer, they went to the free public swimming pool.
What a happy little tumbleweed😂...I like any small town that has kept trees growing on the main street as a few in this posting have ...thank you for the post
I did pick 3.... I chose according to towns I would love to visit. 1- Walsenburg: Beautiful art on those buildings. 2- Fowler: store fronts looks so interesting. 3- Ordway: buildings are so old and really look well maintained. Thank you
Thanks for a walk through memory lane. I grew up in Flowler. I went to school for a while in Ordway. One set of grandparents and my parents are buried in Olney Springs, and my other set of grandparents are buried in Walsenburg. This time of year the area looks pretty bleak but the spring and summers are really beautiful.
Yeah I would have to agree with your top two. I liked Walsenburg because of all the artwork and murals. Great to see Bethune seems to still have an active little school so for that reason I would put it higher on the list. And nice to see you chose the Colorado towns that don’t flaunt dispensaries (unless they just didn’t make the videos).
So I'm putting my top three here before I hear yours. It was a hard choice between Walsenburg and Fowler, but in the end Walsenburg ranked as number 1 because it was so colorful! All the businesses had their own choice of color and they weren't shy about it. I love that! Plus they had more murals. Fowler had creativity as well, but Walsenburg looked like it would be fun to live in. My third choice was La Veta. I liked the architecture and inviting feel about that town. And we matched all but the 3rd. And to be honest I did have Ordway in the top 3, but La Veta won out in the end. Probably because of the mountain pass.
Thanks for doing this. I grew up in Colorado. Lived in Durango, Ouray, Telluride and Montrose. Went to college in Gunnison. Please do some of the ski towns and four-wheeling towns.
I liked Burlington first, I guess because it was full of history and close to Kansas, my home state. Then, Walsenburg which is always a good stop on our trips to Kansas. Lots of neat old buildings and murals there. A fun mainstreet video. See you soon. 😊
I liked Burlington and Walsenburg then Fowler. The scenery on the drive at the end was beautiful. Interesting towns and informative. Thank you for the trip. Happy trails to you and God bless. P.S. That dog sure did look a little spooked and the tumbleweed at the end was a great ending to your video. Ha!
Ridden 160 south out of my home state many times. It's a great ride in the fall. Interestingly three of those small towns still have an operation movie theatre. Walsenburg has a colorful downtown and a great courthouse. Huerfano (the orphan) has some great little towns, not all incorporated. I've ridden to Fowler more then once to eat just because.
Burlington, its amazing how these little towns have so much structure standings and in use. Alot of these towns remind me of our county seat. Not much going on in Erie ks.
A couple suggestions if you are in Colorado on highway 50, visit Skyline Drive in Canon City and Bents Old Fort near LaJunta. Both are well worth the visit.
Burlington is a nice town. Used to have an annual Stearman Fly-In. Does have the Kit Carson Carousel, worth a look in summer. Cheyenne Wells courthouse is one of several designed by Denver architect JJ Huddart. Walsenburg's courthouse is one of the few remaining Richardsonian ones in the state. Huerfano County is named for a prominent volcanic butte north of town. Crowley County's courthouse looks like a Denver Square house with an addition. Sugar beets used to be the major cash crop in the Arkansas valley.
I spent the first four years of my life in Fowler. My four oldest brothers grew up and graduated high school there. The rest of my childhood was spent in Pueblo. During my 20s, I lived in various places along Highway 50 from Pueblo to Holly Co. before moving out of state.
@@lonnieallen3530 My four oldest brothers might have. They graduated and left Fowler mid to late 60's. I was just shy of my 4th birthday when we moved to Pueblo, so I don't remember much of Fowler back then.
Ken Curtis of Gunsmoke sang with the Sons of the Pioneers. He grew up in Las Animas, east of Fowler and Ordway and only 10 miles away from where I grew up.
This new series has been really good, actually I didn't watch the first two episodes until two days ago but I really enjoyed them both. Do you plan on making this a big series? I'm sure it has lots of potential especially in these midwest or more central states.
Enjoyed your video, and I concur that Walsenburg tops the list. Having said that - Fowler is a notorious speed trap, and I am far from the only innocent auto traveler who has come to grief there for no good reason. No way I could ever feel positive about that town.
Another great video! My Grandma was born and raised in Coffetville, Kansas. I think Highway 166 goes thru it. Coffeyville is very close to Oklahoma border. Do you have any videos of Coffeyville? Thank you!
@TravelwithaWiseguy Thank you! I watched it. Awesome. I heard Dalton gang dual Bank robbery story somewhere before. I didn't know it was Coffeyville. I wonder if any of my Grandma's family was there during that time. Thanks again
I think I could live in East Colorado! When did you go to Larned? Many years ago I worked at the prison there, Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility. Not the best years of my life.
Fowler gets my vote. Looked rather lively, and I automatically rule out towns in the mountains since they get all the attention from the tourist anyway... One thing I noticed though, it seems all these towns had a population peak around 2000. Any guess why that is? Folks hiding out since civilization was supposed to end that year and they wanted to be out of the big cities?
Wow, I had not heard or read similar sentiment. I always enjoyed my family's visits to Burlington when we traveled to and from Denver. I always found it to be an oasis on the plains of Colorado because of the dearth of towns with services along I-70. We always made a point to stop at the Safeway, and my siblings and I loved the giant slide at the large playground.
Love the demeanor and positive attitude of this channel.
😊♥️

Miss the old G&G Ttuckstop just out of LA Veta from back in the seventies.
That’s so cool!

Olney Springs because of the dog. Walsenburg for the bright painted buildings. Honorable mention for the outtake dog and tumbleweeds

I wouldn’t play that song but it would’ve been a copyright violation 😊
@TravelwithaWiseguy Makes a lot of sense. Not a living member of the band, and yet someone has their hand out!
Fowler was my favorite, so we were not too far apart. Thanks for showing these small towns.
Fowler is a cool spot, for sure!
Thank you so much for the vote for Walsenburg! We love it here, so happy to hear you liked it too. Next time you are in town, come to GubGubs pizza and ice cream, corner of 7th and Main. 😃
I'll definitely check it out next time I'm in the area!
Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks for the added support!

I lived in ordway from 2010 to 2020... thank you .. I enjoyed seeing it again
I grew up in Cheyenne Wells, I now live 10 miles east in Arapahoe. Just five miles from the Kansas state line!!
I grew up in Cheraw and we used to play 8 man football against Arapahoe.
@@lonnieallen3530 Were you there when the Turkey Plant was still dumping turkey guts in the lake..?? Nasty.

Very nice tour. Walsenburg is nice and going west on 160 is a great drive with other great towns along the way.

That tumbleweed really was a perfect ending! 😄
I liked Walsenburg best. Also liked Fowler. Thanks for the video!
Thank you again for sharing.
It was my pleasure!
Colorado is one of my favorite states! When I would go there to visit my sister I’d go through Limon to get to Colorado Springs where she lives.
If I remember right the TV show "Lonesome Dove, The Outlaw Years" was set in Cheyenne Wells.
I love Burlington and Walsenburg. Spent many nights in Burlington whenever I was driving back to Bible College in McPherson Ks ❤❤

Cheyenne Wells, I know some people from there good memories,Thanks for the video
I agree with first two but I put Cheyenne Wells at three cause of the nice courthouse. As always Thank you for taking us along.
I enjoyed the courthouse at Cheyenne Wells as well. It was higher up on my list too.
Great to hear your take! Thanks!
When I was a kid we had relatives near Sugar City. They made regular shopping trips to Ordway or Rocky Ford,
My Mom attended church in Sugar City in the 1940's.
Burlington, its amazing how these little towns have so much structure standings and in use. Alot of these towns remind me of our county seat. Not much going on in Erie ks.
sometimes places give off a vibe, it seems like these are good decent people in these little towns that have found the happy median
A couple suggestions if you are in Colorado on highway 50, visit Skyline Drive in Canon City and Bents Old Fort near LaJunta. Both are well worth the visit.
Ditto on the Bent's Old Fort.
ha ha was just in Fowler and Walsenburg last week

The Annual Stearman Fly-In I think you are refering to was 60 miles further east at St.Francis, Kansas.
I think I liked super tiny Bethune the most!
That's Wild, Heavy, Very Far Out there! Annd Really Cool!😎👍
Thanks man! 😎
like seeing the old movie theatres. hopefully they are still going
Love those too!
I spent the first four years of my life in Fowler. My four oldest brothers grew up and graduated high school there. The rest of my childhood was spent in Pueblo. During my 20s, I lived in various places along Highway 50 from Pueblo to Holly Co. before moving out of state.

Back in the 70s, Walsenburg had a restaurant called the Burger Hub. The hamburgers were the size of small hub caps -- best hamburgers on the planet.
Fowler looked cool.
Close to my home town of Cheraw, Colorado.
Love Walsenburg and LaVeta
I love La Veta..becoming a bit of an arty town..
We usually stay in Burlington when we drive to Kansas.

Fyi....Ken Curtis of Gunsmoke grew up in Las Animas not that far from Ordway and Fowler.

Burlington is, I'm sorry to say, a sorry place to live, with the feedlot right at the edge of town and obvious poverty on the outskirts.
