The thing with the cars is mandatory in Belgium and the Netherlands. It's called "ritsen" or zippering, meaning everyone stays in their lane and at the end one of each lane can go through the bottleneck, one at a time.
It's also how it should be treated in the UK - but sadly the country is full of self declared traffic police that misunderstand road use
It should be mandatory in other places too, like for perth Western Australia for instance, where merging seems to be rocket science…
It's now also mandatory in Germany. Not all people know of or care about that, though. 😊
I love Sarah Millican, funny woman, but that attitude regarding zip merging has to change. Why cause a bigger traffic jam? Utilise the lanes up until the actual closure. Someone will let you in. My fiancé utilised a lane up until it’s closure and people in the long queue waiting started pulling their cars out at an angle to try and stop him, if they caused him to hit them, they would be at fault.
In Australia if you are merging into someone else’s lane and u hit them, it’s your fault, not theirs. Plenty of ppl try to push in anyway, but they do so at their own risk. I think a lot of ppl don’t realise and think the other person should give way bcuz the person trying to merge’s lane is running out - nope, there’s no such obligation. If u wanna be a 🍆, the road rules are on your side.

The last time I went out for a meal, I was served the meal on a slate, and I sent it back telling them to serve it on a plate. They said they couldn't do that, so I refused to pay. They found a plate surprisingly quickly. And I got a free dessert!

Similar thing happened to me. I sent it back to the kitchen. It took ages to come back (it was rice, I wanted it in a bowl). They said they had trouble finding a bowl!!!
Being a parent helps you learn to say 'no". My favorite phrase to persistent kid requests was: "No" is a complete sentence."

Sarah has mastered the nun’s “No.” She’s clearly learned to channel Catholic girls’ school principal nun energy for the “No.”
I know it's comedy BUT in a zip-merging you have to stay in your lane until the very end and then change lanes. One going straight, one changing lane, one going straight, one changing lane... That's the correct and effective way. Just think of a zipper on your clothes. You want the teeth to interlock neatly one after the other. If they don't your zipper will get stuck or rip open in a very inconvenient moment.
Yeah. I love Sarah, but that bit made me cringe a bit. You're meant to stay in lane and then merge in turn at the point where your lane closes.

I was told by a store employee that they HAD TO HAVE MY PHONE # to complete a purchase. I gave them someone else's and won't go back.
I tell them I don't have a phone in a sad voice looking embarrassed if they get insistent.

Finally had some time to sit down and catch up on some laughs. I almost choked on my scotch tea a few times at some of your jokes. You, my baby, are a tremendous talent. Love, Lola LaRue
I hate to be serious when I know this is about laughing but if I caught Sarah doing what she was talking about in traffic when I was on duty I'd pull her aside and give her a warning. Getting into the 'open lane' early is the wrong thing to do and causes the traffic jam to be sometimes twice as long as it should be. The correct thing to do is to use ALL lanes and merge in a zipper fashion at the last moment. This allows all available space to be used and reduces the congestion. People are loath to do this because they feel it's cheating but also because of the aggressive reactions of others described by Sarah here.
Lastly, the road belongs to all of us. Not one square metre belongs to one person more than another. The object is to share it nicely and get home safely. Driving as though it's your duty to punish anyone who's doing anything you judge to be wrong, for example by not letting them onto a part of the road you've decided belongs to you, is just bad driving.
@@lydinmontreal Sorry, still not sure if you get this. Merging is supposed to be exactly that. People should use both lanes and at the front where the two lines of traffic meet they should merge in a 'zip' fashion. This causes less congestion because it uses all the available road space. What mostly happens is that people pull over to the one lane far too early and cause a longer tailback than necessary. Those who do it properly are seen as cheats and get the reaction both you and Sarah talk about. You're doing it wrong not the so-called cheats.

Hilarious, but my inner pedant has to mention that, according to the RAC: "While motorists on the inside lane might think they're doing the right thing, it can be more beneficial to continue using the open lane until the last minute, utilising all of the available road and then 'merging in turn' at the point at which the road narrows to a single lane." Theory test pro state: "In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily. Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed.” - Rule 134, Lane Discipline, Highway Code. By not merging correctly, studies show that we create more congestion because we leave the closing lane unused for longer. It can lead to one lane of gridlocked traffic instead of two lanes of slow moving traffic." Don't shoot the messenger, I also tend to behave as Sarah does 😂

In Germany it’s considered an efficient use of space to fill both lanes up to the last possible moment then do a ‘zip’: one vehicle from one lane, then one from the other etc. Just goes to show! 😂
