I am just so thankful that someone else appreciates the beauty of this game. I was gifted it as a little kid and rarely made it past the second or third boss, but it lived rent free in my head until covid, when I finally was able to play it all the way through, I've loved it so much I'm writing a book based off it, haha
I just got done playing this game for the first time and I really enjoyed it way more than I was expecting. I agree with a lot of your points, though. I had the exact same issues with the final boss and it took numerous trips back to the drawing board for me. It probably didn't help that I was at level 85. In fact, just about every boss was a brick wall for me. Every time I got to a boss, they would wipe me out. It did feel unfair at times but I'd always be determined to try again. I'd say the lack of targeting wasn't a problem about 90% of the time but sometimes I'd get stuck in that same loop like you said just because I couldn't control who I was healing or bringing back to life. Once my healer was paralyzed but every time I used Esuna, it would heal the wrong person. Even with these annoyances, the fun really does come from limitations. I found a lot of strategy in the game's battle system. I also loved the light-hearted nature of the game, there's so many charming aspects all throughout. I'm so glad I played this game. The story was fun and I loved the art style. It's a bit sad that it gets no attention and seems to be forgotten but at least it has a lasting legacy by spawning the Bravely Default series. I hope Square will give this game some kind of nod some day, maybe by a remaster or at least an easter egg reference somewhere.
it's been a year since I played, you definitely brought back some memories. Painful ones but also charming ones! It is pretty sad this gets 0 reference or attention, it's definitely underrated.

Bravely Default isn't anything like 4HoL, and it's AMAZING, absolutely worth playing. There's a bit of boss repetition by the end though.

It sounds like a fine game just made for niche demographic. I respect that. ...I definitely wouldn't want to play it myself, though.
