Ghosts are an important and integral part of the folklore of the socio-cultural fabric of the geographical and ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. Fairy tales, both old and new, often use the concept of ghosts. References to ghosts are often found in modern-day Bengali literature, cinema, radio and television media. There are also alleged haunted sites in the region. The common word for ghosts in Bengali is bhoot or bhut (Bengali: ভূত). This word has an alternative meaning: 'past' in Bengali. Also, the word Pret (derived from Sanskrit 'Preta') is used in Bengali to mean ghost. In Bengal, ghosts are believed to be the unsatisfied spirits of human beings who cannot find peace after death or the souls of people who died in unnatural or abnormal circumstances like murders, suicides or accidents. Non-human animals can also turn into ghosts after their death. But they are often associated with good luck and wealth in Bengal.

As someone who grew up watching Thakumar Jhuli and is now a devoted horror fan, I can't be more thankful to Devyanshu bhaiya for this representation. Bengali literature and stories need more exposure and this video made me feel waves of nostalgia
Edit: looks like I summoned the Thakumar Jhuli fandom! ❤

@@anidude696 it means 'Bhoot(male ghost) is my son, Petni(female ghost) is my daughter/ Lord Ram and Sri Lakshman reside in my heart, you cannot hurt me'.
'Son and Daughter' here is figurative, meaning 'subordinate' or 'servant'. In the precolonial and colonial era, the lord and lady of the household would be addressed as 'father' and 'mother' respectively by the servants, as a mark of respect.

Hello, I'm a Bangali and I would like to rectify you about one thing. Nishi calls its victims 3 times, not twice. It is a very vital thing we were taught even as kids that if we hear our names being called, we should always wait for a 4th time. If it is only 3 times then we should not respond to it. We Bangalis follow this rule almost religiously. Other than that, very good effort 👍🏻 please keep making such videos.
yes, I remember seeing this Fear Files ep about Nishi a few years back. Haven't forgotten the rule for once 😂

Aleya is also called bhulo which means they can make you lost your way. My grandfather told me about this. In his days when people go out at night they saw many strange lights trying to guide them but instead it made them lost their way. In countryside and villages the roads were dark and if you see plenty of lights going to a direction together it means “bhulo der biye jachhe” which translates to it's bhulo ghost's wedding.
Being a Bengali I can certainly say that our ghosts are also as fond of food(especially maach) as an alive Bengali😂😂😂. Even after becoming dead their appetite for Maach and other Bengali delicacies like Rosogolla never dies. 😊😊😊
Sankhachurni is commonly called Sakhchunni in bengali... Being a bengali our childhood is filled with the stories of Sakhchunni, Daini, Petni, Jokkho, Bromhodoittyo, Pencho Pechi, Sknondokata and all. And our thakuma, dida (s) used to tell these during power cut..

He described 'Sankhachurnis' story from really popular "Thakumar Jhuli"s one of the most popular story "Shakchunnir kahini"..The story he told was 90% similar to that and it's still popular as a meme or a Spooky story for kids to watch.
Yeah, I was also confused about that lart, but after his description I remembered it was Sakchunni and not sankachurni

My great grandmother has witnessed "Mecho Bhoot"
Whenever she used to cook fish, a hand used to come close to her kitchen's window and ask for a fish in a nasal voice.
I enjoy listening these folklore and trust me it's the true story
They don't harm anyone.
What we can't prove or explain doesn't mean it has to be a lie. Appreciate brother.
One of my relative witnessed it too. It's so real.

Mine great grandfather has witnessed mecho bhoot once he was returning home with fish
My great grandfather witnessed mecho bhoot, my grandma witnessed shaakchunni when she was pregnant, My Aunty witnessed aleya, my boyfriend witnessed brahmadaitya and I witnessed nishi 🙂
I remember that when i was small during the time of Kalbaisakhi (April-May) we had a lot of power cuts. Then we used to lit candles and hericane (Bengali people would know) and my grandfather used to tell me ghost stories of sakchunni; skondokata; mecho bhut and others. Those days❤❤
I miss harrycanes.

We want part II of Bengali ghosts including 'Rakkhosh', 'Khokkosh', 'Pecha-Pechi', 'Jokkho', 'Skondhokata', 'Maamdo', 'Shaheb Bhoot', 'Kapriya Pret'...
Jokkho is termed as "yaksha" in Sanskrit and pali who are the guardian spirits and kind in general.
Thus the fact proves that they are limited not only to Bengali culture .
Kanawala Bhut is one of the Bengali ghosts which helps to forget the address of the home and make the man to forget about his home's address. My grandmother had experienced this when she was in Bangladesh. She had gone for an evening walk but when she was coming back to her home she was not able to find her home . She was 20 years old then . This incident really gives me chills till now.
Me being a Bengali laughing as hell listening to the pronounciation of shakchurni🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol, I was totally confused by that until heard the story.. Moreover I realized that I used to think shakchunni ate shakpata for living 🤣🤣🤣.
he literally said the story of Thakumar Jhuli😭😭
@@randallorton3092 we grew up saying shakchunni🤣

Those were the the days when thammu used to tell me the stories about these ghosts.
I think we are the last and luckiest genaration who get the opportunity to hear these stories from our dida and thammus .❤
There are some scary ghosts in Bengal but they are not that popular or common in literature .. I came to know about them from the stories of Kali Gunin .. anyone reads/hears Kali Gunin's stories? Anyway, love this video .. the presentation, the thumbnail everything is awesome
As a Bengali i grew up watching and listening to these stories. 'Nishi r daak' calls 3 times not 2 as far as I can remember those stories from my childhood. (Although in my late 20's I became an oblivion person.)
I just love my bengali ghosts. ❤️ Brought up listening to the stories of petni, sakchunni, brahmadaitta, kondhokata, mamdo and many more. They don't seem so much fierce or dangerous.

Another fact about Nishi Dak. As you said, if you respond to Nishi Dak, you're a goner. But if you don't, you'll anger her and she'll scratch a nearby tree. This will get reflected as a scratch on your body (similar to an animal paw scratch).

But there are so many popular ghosts and urban legends of Bengal with their interesting backstories, and as a very old viewer of you I can request, you should make another video on it. Love from Bengal...❤️
Shankhachurni is commonly known "শাঁকচুন্নি" /sankchunni in Bengali and "নীশিডাক" / nishidak calls victims name 3 times..... Love from bengal
Loved it 😜🧟♀️👻☻👍
Where are skondhokata and Mamdo Bhut??? By the way... whatever you are doing it's great...made me think about my childhood...once I was extremely intimidated by NISHI DAK...I COULDN'T SLEEP FOR 2 WEEKS
Sankhachurni/sankhachurnika/shakchunni are called so because the bangles made of conch (sakha) worn by a married Bengali woman are broken when she is widowed. This may be another version of the lore for the name but just thought to add it here. My father has a lot of ghost stories from his childhood and he told this once to me.
I am a Bengali and very happy for this video. I appreciate your research work.
There is another famous ghost folklore in west Bengal and Bangladesh is "Kollakata Bhoot" which means beheaded ghost. As like the name this ghost doesn't have a head. And it's eyes and mouth is on it's belly. It often target those people who walks alone at night. It attacks them and twists their neck which kills them immediately.. It's legend is very famous in Rural and village areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Btw Love from Bangladesh ❤
Finally "banglar vut" is come out after the last 2 ghosts hints in last episode ❤. I hope we will see more interesting facts in next video's 😊. Another fact is sankhachurna was created in thakumar jhuli series where she did all the work as per you briefing here😁.
you can explain "PET KATA SHAW" bengali web series,
'Mecho vut', 'Nishi dak', Chiruni(comb) vut all in one❤
Ami recently dekhlam ❤❤❤❤

Wow it's a great video ❤️
But brother that's not sankhachurni, that's Sakhchurni ☠️
U forgot about SKondho-kata(be-headed ghosts) .these are ghosts that u can find on railway tracks or highways due to accidents they have missing heads ,they often throw rocks or beat their chests with hands to hear the echo coming back towards them ,if they dont hear it ,they just run towards that direction, basically like bat echolocation process.
Targets people who return home during their night duty on the way through railway tracks or long lonely highways

i was aware of all these ghosts. but didn't quite know their origins. thankyou for this detailed video on bengali bhoots. my personal favourite bengali bhoots are mamdo bhoot, shankchunni, Aleyaa & nishi. love from Bangladesh
Dear Sir,
There was a bramhadaitya used to live on a bel tree situated in my metarnal inches house. My grandfather means my mother's father used to go early morning to his work around 4 am. Then he saw bramhadaitya many times. And there is also a reason that why my grandfather saw him.
And shankhachurni pronounced different in Bengali is called sankhchurni because they are actually married woman. Sometimes due to changes in stars and time some married woman becomes sankhchunni after their death. Mustered is specially used to beat ghost and spirits. And due to my ancestors and parents grandparents are from Village they encountered this type of cases so many times. And my grandfather means my father's father used to beat ghost and spirits. He used to be like a tantrik.
Can't believe you covered "EKANORE", In my childhood my mom used to tell me about 'Ekanore' When I didn't listen to her and was very naughty, my mother used to tell me stories about such ghosts. Best days of life❤❤

Shakchunni's story reminds me of thhakumar jhuli😌 childhood nostalgia❤
My mother once had an experience with bramhadaitya. She was attending a marriage ceremony of a close relative. She used a short cut route to reach there. We bengalis have special time reference of 'bhor dupur' n 'bhor sondhe'.Its more like a prime time of ghosts or spirits. She walked past a field with her open hair during bhor dupur bela. After returning from the ceremony she couldn't sleep, whenever she tried to sleep she dreamt she was being chased by boys of 10-15yrs who were bald & wore the sacred thread or 'poite'.My grandmother made my mother wear a tabiz after pujas, after which slowly my mother could lead a normal life again. She was in class 9 when these happened to her.
Another famous ghost in Bengal is matha kata bhoot..
Its saw probably in train line...
Basically those whose accidents by trains they became matha kata bhoot...
Basically they didn't saw anything but they heard frequently..
