i got jofa 9800 shoulder pads when i bought the full set of protection from a guy who got an concussion while playing. i've caught the puck couple of times in chest and shoulders while playing, and have been cross-checked bunch of times, too. never felt a thing in them which seems just crazy to me. what i will say is that while i think they are quite light they are definitely heavy when compared to whatever they're selling you in hockey shops these days (when i go to sharpen my skates i usually browse their stocks and top end stuff doesn't even compare to jofa in terms of protection). might hunt down jofa shin pads and elbow pads as well since i plan on playing defense/center so might need to block shots some more.

Hi there, thanks for the comment! Yep, I totally agree. It’s hard to beat Jofa/RBK equipment for protection and quality. I’ve since picked up the elbow and shin pads and haven’t looked back. Some people think that just because adult rec hockey doesn’t have checking that is also doesn’t have contact. Gotta protect oneself.

Are the JOFA 6500 also sought after? I bought a complete hockey set from an ex hockeyplayer. I wondered why he would use such a used up shoulderpad while having pretty new equipment overall. I thought that shoulder pad is worth the least but in the end its worth what I paid for the whole set

I believe so. As long as they're pro stock and authentic center ice NHL branded, they're probably worth something. Many players are now using the Reebok 6K and 7K Pro shoulder pads, as they're a bit lighter and more mobile, but a lot still use the JOFA branded stuff. There's a reason why this stuff is sought after. There's no BS marketing, it just has to protect players. It's us jokers who pay money for the retail marketing hype! lol Anyways, if you have a pair they're probably worth a bit. I'd not that some are made in China and some Sweden. The ones made in Sweden are the high dollar ones.

Bought a set of mediums for $200 after seeing a picture of Peter Forsberg in 8500s. Cool collectable pads but I prefer my Chinese 9400s for playing.

Well, these pads are sure worth it. I just picked up another pair of RBK 6K Pro Stock pads from the Pens. They're usually $179-200, but they were being sold for $35! Couldn't help myself! They're more mobile than the Jofas, but the Jofas are more protective. Either way, both pads seem to be all the pros wear and I can see why. Thanks for watching!

How about jofa 9800, what can I compare it to today?

Hey there, if you're referring to what modern-day shoulder pads you can buy that are most similar, I'd say you'd want to look at the CCM Tacks line. If I'm not mistaken, Reebok bought Jofa and even CCM at one point. I think CCM then came to be its own company again. But specifically the CCM Tacks AS1 pads. The other one that may've just went out of production, but was similar is the Bauer Nexus 2N line of pads. These are all retail pads. If you want another pro stock option, you should look for a pair of RBK 6K or 7K Pros. They're great but expensive and hard to find. In fact if you're looking to replace your Jofa, the RBK 6K Pro would be ideal. Second choice would be CCM AS1 Tacks. Thanks for watching!

@Y G Well, the 5030s are certainly popular, but I think they give a false sense of protection and aren't as mobile as people like to think. If I'm playing roller hockey, I'll elect for a padded under armour shirt of some kind. There are a number of manufactures out there and some that are really good that are designed for football. That said, the hockey specific ones offer tricep pads, which I prefer. Take a look at the Mission Core padded shirt or the Mission Pro padded compression shirt. I'd also consider wearing CCM Referee elbow pads as they're lighter than ice hockey pads and more mobile, but still protective. Thanks for watching!
