You can’t use salt directly. You can buy the 3 in 1 tablets which have salt in them so maybe try those

I shouldn’t worry too much. Just put normal dishwasher salt in it. It will all gradually dissolve

Yes definitely. Maybe don’t wash glasses for a while until the salt is all used up. Or lower the salt output on the wash, some machines allow you to adjust it.
