It is amazing how many people today have no idea that Elvis grew up in abject poverty in a Black community in Tupelo, Mississippi. He absolutely knew what poverty and hunger was. It is said that Elvis was an extremely generous and thoughtful man, he never forgot what it was like as a child of poverty. We all must understand that poverty does not know color.

Hi dad was in prison for only 8 months but they were really poor. Enough for his dad to alter a check which got him in prison. But there was a lot of love in that poor little house.

I hope you read your comments because you’ll learn a lot from us older ones who grew up listening to Elvis. The first time I heard this song, I was a little kid, playing outside. Someone had a radio and it came on. I got the same shivers you did when I heard it. Then, I cried and cried. It was like he was singing my life. The song still makes me shiver. And cry for all the kids that didn’t make it out.

I was 7 when i first heard the song, and I had the same exact physiological reaction listening to the song. I remember it so vividly too. My auntie lived in Memphis, and every summer i would go down there and stay with her during the summer. She took me to Graceland for the first time, and for my birthday she got me the Elvis 30 greatest hits CD from the Elvis store across from Graceland. And as soon as we got back to her house I immediately went upstairs to play the CD. Once In the Ghetto came on and i listened to it, I just remember getting goosebumps and felt like a shiver was sent down my back while i was laying on the floor in the heat of the summer in Memphis. Having the opportunity to go to Graceland and Sun Studios and literally be physically immersed in a place in which so much world renowned talent and ground breaking history took place at and then my 7 year old brain trying to take in and process everything I just experienced that day while listening to his music and that song coming on literally changed and shaped my life from that day on. Im 27 now and in the ghetto still brings shivers to my spine and passion in my heart.

I am yet to see any videos of black people dancing with white people to any songs Elvis sang, however, there is plenty of proof that white people openly danced with black people listening to Chuck Berry songs. I grew up with 6 brothers and 2 sisters. I came from poverty, did 16 years in prison for Armed Robbery.
My mother buried 2 of my brothers. Both from suicide.
I'm 54 and my mother is 74. I grew up listening to Elvis. This song, I can sing with more passion. This is what I thought was a song for me. But she's not gonna have to bury me.

Yes Elvis grew up in poverty. He was a twin but the other baby didn’t make it. He was very aware of the hardships in life at an early age. This song came out in 1969 and he wanted to bring awareness!! Everytime I hear this song I ball my eyes out; it speaks to my soul!!

This song was actually written by the late great Mac Davis (whom I was fortunate enough to meet in 1977 or 78). A great performer in his own right!

My sister, friend & I had front row seats & had several women behind us who were jealous because he kissed all 3 of us. My husband couldn't understand why I was so upset when I heard he had passed away. He was a very talented singer & songwriter.

He came up to me at our hometown country club in our "19th Hole" bar, after he and his band played a round of golf. The local club members were all around him and his band members so he politely excused himself and walked up to the bar to order a drink. As he waited, he noticed me standing off to the side, in my ugly gold jacket (ugh), waiting to serve water to anyone in need. He then just started talking to me, as pleasant as anyone you've ever met. ~ Sadly, I never got to attend one of his concerts.

Elvis will always be one of the greatest ever. He grew up very poor un the projects. He knew what he was talking about in this song. He never forgot how he grew up that's why he was so generous. I think its amazing that the young people of today are checking him out.
Elvis was different, and his perspective was different than great majority of the white people in the South, during that time period. Elvis grew up in the poorest parts of the South during the Great Depression and Segregation. And he understood the lowest depths of poverty. Only 4 white families on his block, he lived and played with black children while living in a 1 room shotgun house (shack) with a porch, and without electricity. How poor was Elvis? His twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley was born about 30 minutes before Elvis. Sadly, he was still born. The Presleys were so poor that they couldn't afford a coffin, so Jesse had to be buried in a shoebox. He was laid to rest in Priceville Memorial Gardens in Tupelo.
The great legends of color in his era: BB King - Jackie Wilson - James Brown were there to witness Elvis‘ creativity. He was a one-of-a-kind super talent that grew up in the black community during the great depression and segregation in the deep South. His support for the civil rights movement is not known by the greater population in America.
Clearly a terribly racist time Elvis put poverty and racial socialization on his platform. But he did it all through Music and his behind the scenes actions alone. He never got political I think that’s what actually made him so powerful and able to succeed.

Most white men in the south disagreed with him or was jealous of him. 99% of white people male or female during his day or even today had/have no idea how he grew up and why he felt the way he did. Growing up in predominantly Southern black neighborhoods named Shakerag and Beale Street during the Great Depression, in a shotgun home/shack with no electric, puts him in a very small company. How many families (white or black) had to bury a stillborn twin in a shoe box? Thats the kind of poverty thats rare and then to feel for black people as a white kid in that era and location? He was the first to break segregation laws in Memphis. I stick to my 99%.

I was lucky enough to have seen Elvis do this song in person and I cried for the rest of the show. Long Live the King!
When he recorded his first song at Sun Studio while working as truck driver around Memphis (That's Alright Mama) and when it became a huge hit, everybody thought it was a black man singing it. My mom was one and said she was shocked to find out he was white. It made headlines back in those days. Watch new Elvis movie on HBO.
Think about something, when did Elvis sing this? What was his target audience with this song? Elvis was preaching to the white folks and to all of us. The sad part and as this song eludes to that same Ghetto situation exists in Chicago and other cities today. Why? Because far to many of us have "turned our heads and looked the other way". As far as which a good Elvis song to listen to? ANY of them! But if you want to take a deeper look into what this man was about you might want to make your next one IF I CAN DREAM. I can't believe that I was never much of an Elvis fan. That men knew what it was like growing up in the Ghetto and never forgot were he came from. I very much admire that. He was also very generous and giving. His songs tell a lot about his live. He had so much soul and many black friends that admired him. He was a very loving and giving human being. There was not one racist bone in his body and he certainly never thought he was above black people. He was such a gentle soul. Growing up he still had a lot of pain in his life. The only way he could handle that pain, was by taking to many drugs. RIP, Elvis. There will never be another you. Rest easy now Elvis, you don't have to live wit pain again. I never took drugs, but I understand why you did. Elvis for ever. I am very much impressed by him. Loved your reaction to his song and the men himself. I saw him in Memphis 3 years before he died and his voice was like the angels opened up heaven and let us hear it for a minute. I’m not all that religious by. “How Great Thou Art” is one of my favorite Elvis songs.

Elvis recorded over 700 songs in his life you havent even begun to scratch the surface -, he started out growing up dirt poor in tupelo mississippi singing in black churches and many of his songs have a gospel feel. Theres a reason he was nicknamed the king, his voice sounded like no other and his shows were always entertaining.
I used to sit and listen to his records and I would play the song over and over when I was a little kid. I would start crying. It touched my heart so deeply. When you have time please listen to If I Can Dream. And Unchained Melody. Or one of the earlier ones when he was very young old Shep. And of course and of course for fun romantic surrender. Elvis had a three octave range. The movies he did were because the colonel had him do them he didn't want to do the silly teeny bopper movies, he wanted to get back to some of the serious ones like King Creole or Jailhouse Rock. He was offered the role in a star is born with Barbra Streisand but his manager the colonel blew that for him. He started recording stuff he cared about in 1968. He was deeply affected by Martin Luther King's assassination. After that 68 come back to her he decided to do songs that matter to him. There's a lot of them. Thank you for your review. By the way yes Elvis grew up in the projects he moved from one project house to an apartment building in the projects so yes Elvis did grow up in the ghetto. his father went to jail and his mom struggled and they lived in abstract poverty. When E first played the International Hotel in Las Vegas, the management took issue with the fact his backing singers were Black to the point that they were happy with Elvis coming thru the front door but his backing singers come in thru the back door. Elvis said "My girls go thru the same door I do or I ain't comin'"

Elvis grew up in Tupelo Miss. He learned to love gospel from the black churches that took him in. He never forgot his roots or his love of God.
I am 53 and I have been an Elvis fan since my teens. I love watching young people react to old music and seeing them light up with the realization that it was better than anything that they expected. Keep an open mind and keep exploring there is a wealth of music just waiting for you to enjoy it. This is one of my favorite Elvis songs but as others have said he has a vast catalogue of music to keep you busy for quite some time.
I was about 6 years old when Elvis died. I watched my Mom weep. Everyone in my family cried as the reality set in that a true talent was gone. I am also from MS and we are so proud of Elvis, Muddy Watters, BB King, and the many talented artists from here. Yes, Elvis was truly a man of the people and performed songs from his heart. He was ahead of his time both musically and on a social justice front. He was also very easy on the eyes ;)
I also watched my mom break down in uncontrollable tears when elvis passed away...way too young.

I can see everything he is saying. I grew up in the ghetto and I would never change a single thing, learned so many things and learned what I wanted to be and what I didn't want to be. Thankfully I received a helping hand from family and friends that got me out of the ghetto mentally and physically. We need to always help the next generation and uplift and guide them. RIP King.

He grew up in a 2 room shack on the border of a black Ghetto in Tupelo Mississippi.
He went to black churches and sang in the choir in one, he grew up with nothing and never forgot it, he supported a lot of charities and gave a lot of money and his possessions away.
He was a beautiful human being inside and out, who's fame and prescription drugs to cope with it killed him in the end at the age of 42.

Oh Elvis was a beautiful soul . I was lucky I got too see Elvis in 1972 my first concert . Elvis grew up very poor . He was born in a one room home in Tupelo Mississippi . When his dad got out of prison for forgery of a 5.00 dollar check he moved them to Memphis Tennessee. They lived in a the projects there he said at one time they would have no food and a neighborhood lady would feed the family . Elvis never forgot where he came from . You have to listen to his Suspicious Minds Live in Las Vegas , his If I Can Dream in his White Outfit Live 68 comeback special . Kentucky Rain , Rubbernecking , Jailhouse Rock so many to watch . I would watch as many lives shows you can to see and feel the real Elvis . There is also a short documentary called Elvis and the Black Community That Echo Will Never Die it’s a must .

I think this song came out in 1969. Over 50 years ago! Great music will always be great. And Elvis was the best! He was older than my parents, but I still love his music. Especially "In the Ghetto", "Suspicious Minds", "Kentucky Rain" and "Burning Love". So, glad you are willing to listen and appreciate his talent.
Hey I was just a kid when I heard this on the radio. On the original version his voice is younger and his range will give you chills.

This song is based on a true story. A poor young black man tried to steal to buy food for his newborn.
When Elvis was offered his song he didn't hesitate to record it. There was a special place in his heart for the poor & black. He grew up with both.

Elvis has had many hit songs in a wide range of styles such as Rock, Pop, Country. Gospel, R&B, etc.. Most of his songs are fun type and he'll often include some dancing in his live performances. Anyway, another great hit where he put forth an absolutely awesome performance was a very special song (especially white suit performed on a TV special) check it out...A truly amazing song which he gave us his all, not just his great voice, but the true feeling he expressed was incredible.!!!
