100 years ago, she was the fearsome German warship that ruled the waters of Lake Tanganyika; today the MV Liemba runs as the world's oldest passenger ferry. The Goetzen, as she was known then, was sent to East Africa where she defended Germany's colony against the Allied forces during World War One.
As part of a series looking at stories beyond the trenches of Europe, BBC Swahili's Zuhura Yunus travels to Tanzania and takes a journey aboard the indestructible warship.
The Titel of the story is wrong, the „Graf Goetzen“ was planned and built as a trade -ship. But in ww1 it was weaponed with cannons. Greetings from Germany
walzi2001 yeah I thought so because that was done a lot with cargo ships throughout both WWs, plus you can see that it's no warship 😂. Greetings from AZ, USA 🇺🇸
@@lovethesmellofracefuelinth7374 She was packing 2x 37 mm Hotchkiss revolver guns, 1x 88mm canon and 1x 105mm canon. Sure, you wouldn't dent a dreadnaught but I still wouldn't want to stand in front of the gal when she was pissed.
The last ship of the German Imperial Navy floating on the water
So its indestructible, but not unsinkable and is awesome that they were able to resurrect it from the lake bed. Kind of surprised that they were able to do it, especially for being down 8 years and is quite an accomplishment 👍🏽
It was not sinkable, at least not by what was on the lake. It survived because the crew greased the hull down.
That was a wonderful story of a ship of it's past and now used as a cargo ship to carry goods. Good camera work too.
1:23 Why is entire Denmark shown as part of Germany?
Also without all of Alsasce-Lorraine, parts of silesia, parts of Pomerania and a huge chunk of Posen.
Hmmm...
The captains name is titus. cool!
kind of looks like the equally old cruise ship the MV Doulous
1:31 i didnt even see that guy walk in front of the screen until a second watching
I laughed when she said it was "Indestructable" LOL.
notes l LOL I know and comment about it not being unsinkable 😂
It can be argued that she is not the oldest ferry. As she was not built as one. In New Zealand on lake Wanaka is SS Ernslaw. Launched as a purpose built ferry in 1915. She has continued as such, uninterrupted ever since without having to spend any time on the bottom of the lake.
It was purpose built as a ferry, this documentary was too short to explain it properly
1:43 HOLY SHIT. THAT BOAT IS MADE OUT OF COWS!!!
I have a great great uncle who was part of the original reassembling crew
Mv liemba
💪 MSCL
I think that's the oldest ship in Africa
a lake? I thought she was a oceanic ship?
e21big Nope, she's been on that lake all her life. But she was built for the sea
@@sirboomsalot4902 In 1913 she was build in Germany and were tested at sea, but then she was deconstructed for transport and carried to lake Tanganika in 5000 boxes and reconstructed there.
Music lovers out there. Is that Finnish composer Jean Sibelius I hear at 0:58. One Sibelius symphonies - which one? Bangkok-Johnnie born in Suomi-Finland
a floating beast that was equipped with 4 guns? umm no. that ship is rather puny with only 3 guns, one 105mm gun, one 88mm gun, and two 37mm guns...
1 105
1 88
2x 37
This does not equal 3 unless ur talking about turrets
I wonder how mad people would be if I said it was a nazi ship
Nazis in 1916 ? ... People would just realize you're dumb
Shogo he even pointed out what he was joking about and you fell for it
I just got it. At first, I thought you were asking how many people would be mad if you said their beloved ship was built by Nazis, but I get it now
Adolph Hitler's memorial remain in the world
the ship was from the first ww dumbass
Actually, its the German Kaiser Wilhelm II's legacy.
