Peter, big thanks for video.. I'll try to put out my rear left bearing this afternoon.. But not sure whether it is bearing which is making more noise when I turn right (and most of the weight stress to the left side) or it is just brake shoes which is moving? Somebody can help, pls? Fyi : brake shoes already changed.
I am alil Kate to the party but to check if your bearing is faulty: While the wheel is on and still tightened up put your hands at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and try pushing and pulling to shake the wheel, if it moves, that means it is a faulty wheel bearing.
Peter Finn, my corolla model 2001 is make a hooo sound from the back wheels when driving at 40-160km/h is that a bad bearing or what? How can i know when the bearing is bad?
Peter, thanks for this vido guide. I have a question - what is the torque spec for big central nut, if you want reuse the hub and replace only bearing? I cannot find this, as this procedure is stated as too special for DIY mechanics. Thanks.
great tutorial! ** I've always heard that Lb/f?? as "foot pounds" which upon thinking about it doesn't seem right, but that's what it is.... After reading the other comments and horror story, I will for sure look up in the book and do my own due diligence. update: not sure what the "horror story" cause was, but the Haynes book book showed 59 foot pounds (ft/lb?) fwiw **(edit-- note: this job was completed only with the encouragement and help from this video, and also the book, Thank you Mr. Peter Finn! some observations: the later model hub with the ABS tone ring absolutely did not fit the 1994 DX, and the correct replacement came with a plastic cap that had to be removed. Added bearing grease per Peter's other video, since the ball bearings had only a light coat, were showing and not well packed from the factory)
Hello! Is it even necessary to put grease in the wheel bearing? It's because the new wheel bearing already brings a little grease! How number is the key to loosen and separate the bearing from the hub? I'm not talking about the four 14mm screws, I'm talking about the only screw. Thank you and sorry for my bad English.
A wheel bearing has gone on my Corolla but my garage said it might be quicker and easier to change the whole hub assembly rather than just the bearing. I don't mind as long as it's fixed.
I have a huge question, I used your video when I changed the rear passenger side. I have tried to remove the rear left side. I have worked on it for 3 days now. Problem is I can not get the dust cover to come off of the bearing. so How do I do it. I have soaked it . I have driven backwards (someone told me to do that because the break is stuck ) ( it stops my car) HELP how do I get the dust (rust) cover off so I can change my wheel bearing. When the wheel turns it sounds like it is uneven and rubbing on 1 side. I have soaked it with a very expensive spray. THANK YOU. HELP PLEASE
Peter I love your vids I drive a 1994 Toyota Celica and this is literally the exact same setup. I have a question though when you remove the rear wheel bearing assembly do you need to remove the the O-ring and lube it and generally clean the inside area where the axle is?
10:22 100Nm ????? Typical maximum torque rating for class 10.9 bolt is ~70Nm (50Nm w/ lube). Mine all had to be drilled out to remove unfortunately. I was going to buy new OEM bolts, but Toyota wants $6 each! I went to the hardware store and obtained 10.9 Class bolts of the same type. Toyota's bolt markings are proprietary, so I can only assume they're class 10.9. Anyway, 100Nm is impossible and I've snapped 2 heads off and ruined the threads in one of the holes. I don't know what to do now, because you cannot buy the axle carrier assembly anywhere, except maybe from Toyota. The only thing left I believe I could do is to buy longer bolts and add nuts on the other side (1 bolt enters the axle carrier and cannot receive a nut). I looked up the torque sheet before, and I thought it said 59 ft/lbs, but I figured you knew best. With anti-seize I should have really used 50 Nm. Arrgh:(
Yes there was no confusion between Nm and ft/lbs. 100Nm was too much for the bolts I obtained. It may have been fine for Toyota oem bolts, but not the class 10.9 I obtained from the hardware store. The heads were turning, without the rear turning, until snapping. I ended up using 80Nm, which felt like a more appropriate limit. I used longer bolts, to add nuts and lock washers on the opposing side. So far still tight after 150 miles.
BEFORE ANYONE CHANGES THE WHEEL BEARING AND HUB ON A 2002 Camry or around that year THE HUB DOES NOT COME OFF EASY IT IS RUSTED ON poor engineering !! Don't think for a second it will fall off!! I am on my 3 hour of trying to pop out the hub.... yes 3 F ing HOURS !!! be prepared !! If you don't have the time or tools don't bother screwing with it! its a 5 hour job but it should take 30 mins !! Good F..ing LUCK !!! (BFH!! Big Fucking Hammer)
Spray the surrounding areas with lubricant a day or so prior to doing the work. More than once depending the severity, be surprised what difference it makes
Peter! your channel has taught me so much about working on my 2001 Corolla, I have saved so much money! Thank you!
Hi and many Thanks for feedback. :-)
Peter, you are a great teacher - thank you!
Many thanks!
What size bolts to take drum off
you're the man peter. great job as always.
+Slammed Cannon Thanks for feedback. :-)
please let me know what torque spec for this rear wheel bearing? please.
What size are the bolts to take off the drum hat
12 mm nut head and standard Toyota engine bolts
Does this technique also work on a Toyota Cressida 1989 model which has got a split differential and CV's at the back?
It is different. 👍
meu amigo eu sou do Brazil, estou muito impressionado com seu vídeo, muito obrigado, vc é muito bom obrigado.... parabéns...
👍
is this the same on a 1996 4wd corolla?
ooooohhhhh I wanted to see the bearing replacement! cool video though. I dont have to to disassemble the brakes. thats great!
Peter I have a loud ringing come from my driver side wheel what could it possibly be ?
Yes. Also driveshaft and brake disc could do noise.
Good man! Great video, this will save me a some money.
Dani El Hello, Thanks for feedback.

+Ernest Makhetha Yes, hooo sound is from tires or bearings. Replace both and Hooo is away. :-)
Peter, thanks for this vido guide. I have a question - what is the torque spec for big central nut, if you want reuse the hub and replace only bearing? I cannot find this, as this procedure is stated as too special for DIY mechanics. Thanks.
Thanks for info 👍

Yes, please check by the book.
is the parking brake on?? what size bolts did you use to remove the drum??
Standard 8 mm bolts

Grease is always good for bearings.
What size are those 2 big screws you use to remove the hub. I wanna go buy some and dont know the size
Toyota's special bolts
How tk fit front disc
Thanks for comment 👍
What is the size of bolts used to take off the drum?
Josiah Veurink Hi. It is 10 mm socket size and standard bolt.
A wheel bearing has gone on my Corolla but my garage said it might be quicker and easier to change the whole hub assembly rather than just the bearing. I don't mind as long as it's fixed.

Hi, You must replace the whole part! Purchase some old used part, what is good.
Grab a bff (big fucking hammer) and hit it all around hard. It will start brraking loose. I start with a rubbber Mallet first
You mean the brake drum!?
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor what is the whole part called??
Kimberly Gray : white vinager and pure lemon juice or acetic acid same
do you change put the front passenger bearing the same exact way?
No, it is difficult job
It’s not hard at all just have to take bearings and races out and replace.not hard at all
só pra completar vc me salvou de um enorme problema, DEUS TE ABENCOE
👍
Do i need a diffrent bearing for ABS version?
Yes
According to the Haynes manual, the torque required for the hub bolts is 80 N-m/59 ft-lb, not 100/75 as you demonstrate.
clinke2007 Thanks, also 80 N-m/59 ft-lb is Ok.
Very helpful! I love Finland!
How to fit discs
Thanks for comment 👍
Excelente ilustración, deseo conseguir esas bocamazas para construir un carrito minero z20. Gracias por el aporte
Hi Peter how testing fuel pump is working at rav4 2000, thaks have nice day.
Hi, I will do new video. :-)
Help! I can not separate the bearing from the hub. I already took the screw but it
Use hammer and hit to sides carefully.
The bearing separated into two parts. Most of the bearing came out, but there was a part there.
:(
Very helpful thank you
You're welcome!

goldiegoo You could only add bearing grease to rear bearing.
Peter Finn Thank you! The Chilton Repair Manual shows an O-Ring but there isn't one on my car - you are exactly right!
your the bomb. Thanks for the video. keep up the good work.
Brittney Colburn Thank You for comment.
A very good tutorial!!
+kbbacon Hello and Thanks for feedback. :-)
Peter Finn I've been a professional mechanic for nearly 40 years. Your channel is a lot bigger than mine, but I'm getting there!
Thanks! I am the professional machine engineer and I have many skills. :-) Thanks.
great video Maestro 👍👌
Thank You my Friend. :-)
thank you very much for great videos. keep it up :)
+xtra xtra (i) Thank You. :-)
How to remove back wheel bearing not the front
Good and Thank You. :-)
Sure wish 09 Camry was this easy
of course Peter you have to know the torque, but you did not change any bearings
Yes

Did anyone thought about "The Count" while watching this video? 1-2-3-4 bolts....lol
Good point. :-)
Seized ones takes forever to do
