- Loose flywheel, broken brake drum, bad generator, worn radius rod Bushings etc detroit diesel 671 We found lots of issues today on this running driving 4104. It’s off the road now until it gets some repairs done. He’ll bevback on the list in a few months for me to come back. Not to far from our new property in TN.
First this time. I thought at first Scott, you meant missing as in not there! Yeah, I'm an idiot sometimes. This 4104 will certainly benefit from the in-frame you are scheduled to do on it. Looking forward to the rebuild videos.
Needs some love
Mike Mullay Detroit 671 missing.
Detroit 671 found after short search at rear of bus!
This looks like a good job to watch, and see how you improve the engine and transmission keep them coming.👍👍🇬🇧
Will do
There were always two kinds of diesel mechanics A) Detroit and B) everything else. Your average truck wrencher wanted nothing to do with 2 cycle Detroits. The garage superintendent asked me if I ever worked on DD, said yes, he said can you start tomorrow.
My brother worked on Detroits in the navy. They were in landing craft ,which he was a machinist mate on in the 70s
What an awesome interior.
“Glow plug in a can” lol
I got that one from Tyler
I have an extra can of compression if you need it for that low cylinder .
We call it Summer wind
My neighbor said "starting fluid will make it lazy". I said no, starting fluid will make the owner lazy. It's an easy way to get the engine running without fixing the issues.
@@castirondude a lot of older equipment came with ether start from the factory.
OMG that counter top... I really like that.. And the leather work looks great. Look forward to the rebuild on this one!!
His wife is very good at upholstery
I’m in Love with these conversions!
I know you guys get a ton of comments, so mine will go unnoticed, but I'm in northern Minnesota, and my dad had a garbage company for forty-five years, we kept those old Detroit motors working with bailing wire and bubble gum and bowties some days. 671 , the motor of choice. Not a bus guy, but love what you do buddy
Thanks! Hats off to your dad.
Good leather working and a troupe of ferocious guard puppies make for an amazing bus! I'm glad to see this one is in such great shape.
Ferocious lickers
That is a nice clean looking silver side!!!! And absolutely gorgeous Walkers and Akitas!!! Would love to have one of those beautiful pups!!
They are very pretty
You got a big job there when you come back. That is a beautiful bus inside and out.
It won’t be too bad. It will probably take about 2 weeks.
was really interesting seing towbar engine out video lately seing towing pullpoints love your videos from nz
You need to pull those bottom tins off and have someone 3D scan them. Hopefully a shop somewhere could re-create them for other bus owners that want them. Love the puppers!
Nice fella but a tenuous grasp 'o' the finer points of mechanicin'.. thanks for being there Scott!
Lots to see
Nice condition. Looking forward to the rebuild.
I really like the inside of that Bus its so very nice.. Looks like quite a bit of work to do before this one rolls again. I guess the ole Cat came by to lend a helping paw in case a Bus Mouse came out. Good stuff Scott, thanks for the video..
You’re welcome
Looks like Vegas and California to the west. Next. Say you got there just in time. Be looking forward to the big repair!
Love the engine sound. Beautiful bus.
That engine was not missing. I saw it right there in the back of the bus.
Miss Firing When its cold, and then still when warm? means it needs a Re-Build 10K+
Gotta take it all apart, but its gonna be really good when done. Really neat interior.
4:24 Now we know how you diagnose so accurately -- Vulcan Mind Meld!!!
I was trying to heal it
I guess the starter is snagging because of the flywheel movement . Cool bus !
Maybe. It doesn’t sound pretty.
$5 gets you $10 that, because of the flywheel movement, the nose cone on the starter is broken. Been there, done that. Put a clutch in a 59 4104, and had the "too many helpers" syndrome. We put a clutch in, and I (who was the responsible adult) was so busy trying to save everyone broken bones and smashed fingers, that the flywheel didn't get torqued. We got it together, and the starter failed on about the 3rd crank. It was possibly the original. Didn't surprise me, but the guy at the small-town auto parts store did. He said "I'll get you a starter, but you'd better check the flywheel, I bet it's loose. See this crack? Those are typical of a badly out-of-time engine, or a loose flywheel". So the next weekend, I and a buddy pulled off the trans, and the flywheel bolts were finger tight. Thankfully, we didn't go anywhere with it, and only ran the engine for a few minutes, as it was almost dark. Live and learn, but I still have bad dreams about what could've happened had we gone for a drive.......
Wow that bus is really straight what a beautiful ride
Yes it is
You and Kelly really need one of those cute puppies! Akitas are such good dogs.
We are done with puppies. 3 St Bernards at home are enough.
Well that countertop look beautiful and the freehand art in the rear of it it was nice also
Coming along nicely
Great looking bus !
My brother used to really like those Fairbanks morse diesel engines with the two opposed crankshafts!
So many buses.
So little time!
I really dig most of that interior! I think I'd really like a 4104 or 4106 done in wall-to-wall birch plywood (think 1950s travel trailer).
Nice! I like that vintage look.
I had a cousin from Nashville who lost his drivers' license. Yep. You guessed it. He was a Tennessee Walker.
;)
The first time I heard that joke I was laying in my crib, 💩 my diaper and started crying for momma
@@gullreefclub ... So that was what, six months ago??
^ Hiiyyooooo
dayumn some one got absoloutly RETKED by words
You're like the Subaru commercial. Dog tested..... Dog approved. Good thing you'll be on the road for awhile. Clyde might get jealous.
This engine wants to live, I can feel it, I hope it'll get all the special treatments and love it deserves :)
Hopefully
Beautiful Akita (the dog).
And a sweetheart too
Very Nice Bus.I would love to have one.
Start of another great video ace . Keep them coming John in the UK
Oh ya I am here, lets go Lenny, ride time,👍👌❤🇨🇦
You won
I love the 4104, best looking bus I think.
That is a clean bus. Sounds like the lopping is saying, get Scott, get Scott, get Scott.
Those belly pans were designed to keep the engine oil pan warm in the winter. Reason they don't get put back on is that the Bulkhead holders get worn down and if they arent' repaired properly, those pans will fall down and catch on the road. JUST saying
U should start working with Vintage Glass Company on manufacturing the rear windows & windshields Hell all the Glass! I’m sure they would be interested in doing it with all the vintage busses being restored & being used now! I can get u his name & Number of the Man U need to talk to! I buy all my glass from him for classic cars I fix! & I think he’s located in Tennessee!
I love the Tennessee Walker Horses!!!! I’ve had 18-20 of them Throughout my life & I Love their Temperment & Personalities! My Friend has 12 of them now! He has a HUGE BLACK One his name is Lerch!!! Like off the Adams Family!
David Ellison that would be fantastic if we had a supplier for all the glass and rubbers on these things as we restore them. I know it ain’t gonna be cheap but what is in these busses? I’d rather pay a steeper price and have new, stronger, safer glass and not let those areas be the ugly child especially after a new paint job
Awesome video
I love that Western rustic look
That bus looks great
Yes it does
I see a linerset and bearing change is going to happen there. A head rebuild too. The belly pans were a popular addition to hot rods in the 50's. especailly louvered ones. There are potential horses waiting to be unleashed in that engine, i can hear them.
Yes, they are factory and very rare
Singing Deep Purple's "Smoke On The Water."
Like the old heads in the shop used to tell the newbies, Son, that engine isn’t missing, its right there. Now it may be misfiring. 😆
Something on the inside is missing, probably compression on one of the cylinders.
Yes Scott , more than likely. But I just couldn’t resist.😏
I read the title like "The entire 671 engine is missing!!!" Goooot it. Nvm...
Not missing literally
I didn't understand that title either. Thanks to Scot's reply I understand the "missing" but what or who was issued to whom?
There's yer problem... See that space under the hood? Sposed to an engine there; engines missin.
Puppies and a great looking 4104. What more can you ask for? Awesomeness!
Some broken stuff too
If you can take photos and provide measurements for those pans under the engine, there is a fantastic fabricator in the Nashville area that can reproduce them, even with modifications if needed! Looking forward to that rebuild!
People like them for free much better than custom made
Shoshone Falls is a large waterfall in Twin Falls ID. my hometown. Also home to the perrine bridge. you had a video here once. (craters of the moon).
When the engine fired up, it reminded me of an old "hit and miss" engine. They were one cylinder with a heavy flywheel, fired once and then spun 3, 4, 5 or more times before firing again.
Yes it did
Beautiful bus, but seems to have a number of minor problem left unattended to that got worse over time.
Will be interesting to follow, and see what more you find during the repair.
Nice wall painting, could it be a try to resemble the Havasu falls?
Early summer I’ll be back
Very nice!
I really like that bus!
Me too
MIght want to check the compressor to make sure it isn't pumping air into the crank case through the oil drain line. Seen it happen a-lot on modern engines. For them to fasten down the oil fill cap and dip stick like that... why wouldn't such high pressure blow by escape through the ports to the relatively low pressure intake? Unless the oil rings are broken or missing.
Beautiful bus.
Yes
Lovely Akita
Nice video Scott, is the surging a normal part of a Two-Stroke Diesel? Might that just be the fuel lines? Gorgeous Akita Puppies they look awesome! Really nice condition and fantastic interior.
Shoshone Falls is just out of Twin Falls Idaho.
Are we going to come along on the tear down and rebuild?
Makes you wonder if the alternator mounting adapter cracked when the teeth broke off the driven gear. There is no extra room for something that big. He is so lucky it didn't destroy the geartrain. I'm sure there are someone out there or BGM that can help him out with spare parts. Will a 50dn geardrive off a 8v71 work? If so I have 2 spares.
It may have bent the end of the alternator shaft when the pieces broke.
I think it has 18 teeth about 2 inches in diameter
Scott, when you get finished working on that 4104 ask the owner if he can deliver it to central Texas? That is just what I've been looking for. lol
Maybe make him an offer now.
Nice looking faun akita
Scott , I noticed you used two wire hydraulic hose in some replacements
One wire is more than adequate in medium pressure applications.
Better bend radius in tight applications and less strain on components.
OE applications are reusable fittings which can be field fixed .
Just need the hose to make repairs or replacements
Is it rated for 250 deg?
Standard operating temperature is 215 and up to 275 degrees .
Most hrdraulic lines have a least a two to one saftey ratio.
I'm sure there isn't any hydraulic lines on your bus that exceed those temps except the stainless braided line on the air compressor. That has a high temperature liner stainless braid
For truck and bus hydraulic lines/ hoses , one wire hoses are adequate
Two wire is normally used in construction equipment
One wire , two wire and fabric covered hose would have the same liner suitable for hydraulic and engine oils.
Hope this helps
Shoshone falls is near twin falls Idaho on the snake river
This looks like quite a project. Only fitting that in Tennessee, some teeth are missing
Except we are in Arkansas
Did I hear you say the underside panels effect cooling?
If that's correct you definitely need a complete set of them to improve your cooling system. A little bit bit of help can make a big difference.
so is it just me thinking the engine has been out worked on and then just stufferd back into the bay without checking the torque settings. Still got a chance to fix it now.
Another 4104 needin' some lovin'👍🚌🔧🐵
I am going to use my magic fingers on it;)
This one looks like it's gonna need more than finger lovin!
10:18 The horse agrees
;)
Well.....at least the blow-by is within spec's.
Your customer is wise to put the time and money into getting the engine running right. Moving to spring brakes is a solid decision. By the way, when using ether, if you have a helper, get the engine spinning BEFORE injecting ether. Too much risk of broken rings.
He starts it, he says he’s going to use some either i say ok if that’s how you do it just use a little bit. This is how he always does it. He then sprays a lot and starts it.... I’m like am i still hearing it spraying???? Guess so
Diesel engine missing! Don't nobody leave this room.
Aww I love pups. So he's doing to have you do a full in-frame complete with a head swap? That's pretty extensive but it sounds like she needs it. I really like it. Nice 4104
Yes it’s an investment
from what i could tell it might be wise to pull the had and drop a piston to make sure you dont have aligned rings because (for gasoline engines) if those rings align, it gets loads of blow by. you already probably know that but just wanted to mention it to everyone else,
also the hunt on that engine is baaaddddd
Take that hippies, here's some greenhouse gasses for ya.
Smoke
Seem like it vibrates a lot. I geuss because it is running bad. The drive line vibrattion may have loosened up the flywheel. The loose flywheel may be holding the starter drive engaged. Good luck. Nice old bus.
Possibly
Hi Scott I saw your video about Tylers new bus project. Something that might help with the conversion check out Copart.com they are a nation wide salavage pool I was thinking you guys could pickup a damaged travel trailer or motorhome to use parts like holding /water tanks pumps generators A/C units some furniture etc for a very low price. Just an idea Iam looking forward to watching the conversion take shape.
Looks more like Tennessee Laying Down Horses to me 😃
Hehe
What about an air starter?? Those are super cool!!!!
Mack had "start-air"
That bus needs Iceman
sounds like there is a spark plug wire shorting scott :)
He forgot to pull the choke!
@@castirondude WELL THAT AND THE DELAMINATION OF THE CHROMEMOLI TRIPOD RODS MAKE THE MUFFLER BEARINGS RUST AN RATTLE
DataWasteland I bet its never had the spark plugs changed on it!! Lol!
I sooooo want a set of belly pans!
They are cool to see
So, were 471's used in earlier GM buses? I know inline Detroit 671, also later v 92's...I guess prior to 47.
When I saw the needle bearings fall out, I thought we may see another V730 install.
Those weren't needle bearings, they were gear drive teeth.
You'd said in the previous video that the bus wasn't too far away from your property... was wondering how far they drove it to bring it to you? Looking like the new owner may have a few surprises ... ooof.
Nice bus
How long can something sit, outside before injectors get stuck, very general question. My 6.5 Detroit Chevy craigslist bargain sat ten years...I just put new injector pump on it and am afraid to try to stay start....if injector stuck couldn't it hurt the injector pump? And I see twenty year cold starts on RUclips all the time, I'm hoping I get lucky?
Dogs make every video better..what breed were the pups?
Akita
I am curious what is behind the mural. I see a door in the mural you didnt bother to open. A closet? Also no fridge?
I could see Kelly complaining about the fog bank that enveloped Lenny.
It’s a closet
exucse me while i fog some skeeters!....an old gmc joke.....
He was a magician making my bus disappear
Wow. Is he selling the pups?? I have an Akita mix and had a 50/50 Akita/American Staffordshire mix...miss her tons
Pups will be forsale
G'day Kevin from Australia.
The back wall of the bus with the painting on seemed to have some kind of concealed door.
Any ideas.
✌ Peace guys.
It’s a closet
@@BusGreaseMonkey doesn't it also allow some acess to the engine bay too? I wonder how the bed was oriented too.
Hmm, I wonder how many of the buses with no bottom plates had them fall and drag along the road for a few miles before they were taken off.
When you can see people driving down the road dragging the exhaust on their cars and pickups I have no doubt the bottom plates had some going that way.
They are spring loaded on there. I doubt they fall off.
But the engine isnt "missing" ;). This will be fun. Big project!
It’s only missing when it runs;)
Provo Falls Utah, maybe?
you will be spending a good deal of time on this one. grin.
Looks like it
changing the subject.
how are your plans going with Lenny for the turbo and engine brakes?
will you be adding under piston oil squirters / coolers to handle the extra heat?
The Cool Buss 😅
How many miles does Lenny have? Love ur channel!! 👍
2-4 million is a ballpark
Do you charge the same for an assessment day like that as you do for a normal repair day?
I'd guess so, since it is your time either way.
Yes
Little Cosby in a can never hurt anybody lol
