  • My journey continues! After departing from Cairo and arriving to Minya, being involuntarily escorted and followed by the police for a good portion of the trip, I spent the night in the city of Minya. During the night I plotted my escape, sneaking out early in the morning, driving into the Sahara Desert and hoping I could continue my trip solo once again, with no further police escorts or exchanges. Follow along and see how long that lasts for me 😅
Welcome to the channel! My name's Gisselle, I'm a budget traveler and have been to 6 out of the 7 continents, visiting 20+ countries, living for some time in Sydney, Australia as well as in Saigon, Vietnam. I am currently living in Cairo, Egypt and exploring all this beautiful country has to offer while visiting nearby countries as well. I am a lover of language and a culturally curious lady just making my way through life one day at a time. I live to learn, I love to travel and explore, try new things and meet interesting people anywhere and everywhere in the world. Come along with me as I solo travel the globe and discover fascinating new places, try delicious local food, meet lovely people, and share a moment in time on this beautiful planet, our Earth.

I remember travelling from Bahariyya via Farafra, Dakhla, Kharga to Luxor a few years ago - taking the western Desert route. I was also alone (me being female) and I was not allowed to go from Farafra to Kharga without having a police officer IN THE CAR with me. Seems they are a bit more relaxed closer to the Nile river ;-)
    Keep going! 🙂

Ahaha, yeah they do this with all foreigners, quite annoying 🤣 I did travel near the Nile on this trip as well, but seemed to encounter the same problem. I also met an older gent from France cycling across Egypt while on this trip, and he was also being escorted. Guess it's just an Egypt thing 😅 Although I did ride to Alexandria from Cairo without any police escorts, and recently Fayoum. Much closer to Cairo though, rather than crossing the country from Cairo to Abu Simbel and back to Cairo again. Ah well, it is what it is 😅

I look at this from both sides. I certainly admire your independence as I also travel around the world alone. But I also understand that the police want to make sure you don't end up as roadkill. So they are being super cautious and escorting you from city to city. You were very courteous to them, and that helps! Continue to explore the world!

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  11 месяцев назад +1

Yeah I heard about this happening to tourists and foreigners before I left on this journey, so it wasn't exactly unexpected. But still very frustrating all the same, and more so than I initially expected, even though I knew it was probably going to happen. I guess I just didn't expect them to follow me TO MY HOTEL once I entered a city and wait there until I PAID and checked in and then ask me where I was going any time I left the hotel with my bike. It was at that point that it was too much for me and I resolved to avoid the police at all costs. I also understood they were just doing what they were told by their superior officers so I wasn't trying to be rude to anyone and the majority of my interactions with the police were fine, meaning I was polite, laughing and joking with the officers are the many checkpoints I encountered (I wasn't allowed to film at almost any checkpoints which is why you don't see almost any of them in this videos series). The interactions with the police caught on camera were really just me riding up to a checkpoint or them finding me on the road as I was traveling from city to city and already recording. Regardless of the forced escorts, I loved this journey and 1000% happy I did it, and would love to do some more similar trips like this in the future (just not in summer as it's killer hot driving through the desert 😅).

Yeah. I am very independent. I love traveling alone. I know there are worse things in the world of course, but it can get very irritating when you are driving on a slow and little 150cc motorbike for 6-9 hours a day in both cold and then hot weather. You're thirsty, your ass is sore, you want to keep moving and arrive to your next destination while having a nice view on your way there, stop when you want, listen to music, just enjoy the ride. Then you have police keeping you at checkpoints for half hour to an hour each time you are stopped at one, eating into your time when you could be driving, getting to your destination and cruising around there. Then, when you finally are able to leave the checkpoint, you usually pass through a city/town/village, and your police escort is turning their flashing lights on, blaring the siren, drawing attention to you and overall just changing the experience completely. While driving in between cities I want to stop and take a break for things, whether it be to stretch, grab water, a meal, or whatever else. When you have an escort it's like being baby sat, they are looking at you, wondering what you are doing, maybe they come over and ask. It's just not as private, independent or enjoyable. This is supposed to be a solo trip. Lastly, the escorts change every 20 mins or so due to jurisdiction, so the new police escorts aren't aware of things you've said to the old escort, like "please stay behind me so I can see the road conditions ahead, and rocks are flying up from your vehicle and hitting my helmet" and things like that. So yeah, it is annoying. I think I am handling it quite well, but this is why I mind.

I'm not familiar with that song, but I do wish I could find copyright free Egyptian music! It's tough to find copyright free music of any kind, unfortunately, and especially Egyptian music.
I was fortunate enough to evade police for most of the day, thankfully. Had I not told them I was going back to the hotel when I first left in the morning, I would have had a police escort from the very beginning all the way through to Luxor, so I managed to avoid that for most of the day, and other checkpoints along the way by just driving through or ignore them flagging me down. I am very much enjoying my trip though, regardless of the police escorts, etc. I'm lucky to be here having this experience, and I am truly loving it! Muchas gracias Dave 🙏

Off course unless you are traveling alone then chose Latin America/ eastern European citizen. They won't bother you as much and won't be viewed as "high value personal ". They heard it too, so while we were debating about the necessity of an escort, it was all friendly and polite.

my dear as an Egyptian let me tell you why police followed you more than you deem enough - the problem is a female tourist on a bike is a very easy target for act of terror especially riding in Sinai where terrorism is hard to combat and also in south Egypt like Minya Asyut Sohag as these cities normally are not used to tourists and they don't care much about tourism being hit like people of Luxor for ex. so police are too much afraid to see you alone in desert cos if god forbid you had unpleasant event or act of violence or the like everybody will accuse police for failure to protect you by letting you into dangerous places especially some parts of non urban regions are known to be too much conservative - you can feel the difference if you drive your bike in urban Alexandria or Cairo - however police still wish tourists stick to urban areas and groups not to be easy target to terror groups - lets imagine tourist had terror act while in Egypt - the international community turn against the regime so the regime turn against security apparatus - since terrorist know that they make tourist an easy target to hit both the government and economy .

Yeah I get it, and I've responded to similar comments many times now, but I will repeat again, it is very annoying. My bf is Egyptian, I live in Cairo, and I am not ignorant to the thought process, intent, or reasons as to why I am being escorted by the police. But in my humble opinion, it is relatively safe. I have had no issues thus far. By the way, I have Egyptians that tell me I shouldn't go into neighborhoods like Garbage City or City of the Dead in Cairo because it's "dangerous", although they have never even been themselves. But I have been there many times and people are friendly, offer tea, etc. So not everyone is correct about their ideas, and it's a bit judgmental in my opinion to say things like that when they have never even been there.
I get the whole blame and international backlash if something were to happen, which is why I say in all the videos I don't blame the police as they are just doing their jobs, but it also doesn't mean it's not very irritating, especially when you have been driving 8 hours through the desert and you're tired and thirsty and your ass is sore and all you want to do is get to your destination and you have police stopping you for an hour at a checkpoint and then passing you off from police escort to police escort having to wait 10-15 minutes for each escort to arrive in every little village and city as their jurisdiction ends. Some police flirting with me, calling me, rocks hitting my helmet from their car which is in front of me blocking my view of the road. Just saying. Thanks for your wishes, I am really enjoying this trip, and my few complaints about the police is just me venting-I know I am very lucky to be here making this journey to the south.

As an Egyptian I understand your culture and how would you want to live your life.
But you too have to understand. Egypt is 1 million kilometers country, it has a population of 110 million + 9 million immigrants and refugees. It had from 2013 to 2019 an isis insurgency that claimed the lives of 3000 Egyptian civilians, tourists, military and police personnel and over 20,000 isis fighters on our eastern and western borders were killed.
Still countries bordering Egypt are not stable.
You are the perfect soft target for one of these terrorists. You are a woman traveling alone posting about where you are and you have lots of followers.
All it would take is a guy with an AK, knife, camera and wifi.
These guys escorting you aren’t doing it because the want to or because they have fun, you won’t uncover a secret they don’t want you to know and they are not spying on you they are many easier and undetectable ways.
they are doing it because they don’t want to see something like that happening.
And this wont be just bad for you, western media will pickup on it, it will hurt tourism and lay off many people so it isn’t just about you.
