David Quinn fired by San Jose Sharks (Instant reaction)

David Quinn has been fired as San Jose Sharks coach, the team announced Wednesday.
“After going through our end of the season process of internal meetings and evaluating where our team is at and where we want our group to go, we have made the difficult decision to make a change at the head coach position,” Grier wrote in a statement. “David is a good coach and an even better person. I would like to personally thank him for his hard work over these past two seasons. He and his staff did an admirable job under some difficult circumstances, and I sincerely appreciate how they handled the situation.”
Quinn's dismissal comes after the Sharks finished with the worst record in the NHL during the 2023-24 season (19-54-9).
Quinn inherited a rebuilding Sharks squad before the 2022-23 season, but it's clear Grier didn't see the progress he needed to see.
Quinn finishes with a 41-98-25 record in two seasons as Sharks coach.

Scotty Bowman wouldn’t win 25 games with this past season’s Sharks roster.
I might be wrong, but I thought Quinn was a good coach that had a roster that was very poor.

Don't agree personally. He made a lot of questionable decisions especially when it came to the younger players. He'd punish players like Eklund for the smallest mistake and keep players up in the top six that didn't deserve it for way too long
You are wrong. He wasn’t handed a great team, but he was poor at coaching. They were bad and still underachieved. That’s a coaching thing.

Like you said Brodie, it wasn't a surprise, it was unexpected. But there isn't anyone to blame at all because this Sharks team had old and young players. To me, you can't expect any team to do good just because they have new players and new coaching staff. But hopefully we get to see the Sharks turn things around and of course, it's going to take time for them to get where they want to be. So thank you David Quinn for trying you best in helping San Jose get back to the playoffs and I hope you get a Stanley Cup with another team. Maybe with Tampa if they let Jon Cooper go or with the new Utah Hockey Club.
As a fan of the NJ Devils, I’ve been rooting for the Sharks. With recent trades between the teams, I know some of the guys on the roster. It’s been great to see Fabian Zetterlund getting a chance to shine when he could barely crack the lineup in NJ, and Mackenzie Blackwood seemed to have more consistency to his game as well (though the injury bug is still there). Next year I hope Vitek Vanecek can return to form as well - he’s a really nice, humble guy, great in interviews, who just had a bad year here. Possibly due to the coaching staff here, which is also a candidate for wholesale changes in the offseason.
As far as head coach’s jobs go, fans like us often like to predict (demand?) their fate based on what we see on TV. What we don’t see is the interactions they have with the players and GM, and most importantly the assistant coaches. Last year when Lindy Ruff was candidate for the Jack Adams (then fired this year), was it because of his own coaching or was it because he was the figurehead of a coaching staff that included Andrew Brunette? Fans will likely never know. There is so much about staffing that fans don’t know.
I really can't argue with this. Bad team or not, every interview the guy sounded defeated. If the Sharks are going to turn this around, fresh blood is necessary. We need an Antonio Pierce-type coach to build a new culture in the locker room.

I think Quinn's fate was sealed after the Sharks gave up that 10 spot to Pitt at home after giving up 10 the game before. Nothing says "I've lost the team" more than that pathetic response to an embarrassing loss.
The Sharks are probably going to have to settle for a washout who is willing to take his lumps for another shot at a head coaching job. Woodcroft fits the bill, but I don't think McLellan needs the aggravation.
Todd McLellan came to my mind right after the news, since he successfully made LA to be a contender recently. If the Sharks don't hire him, I believe another team will hire him sooner or later.
The 2-10ga games showed the team wasn't prepared and (I feel) Quinn didn't do enough to hold them to a high standard. That was his downfall.
You obviously don't know anything about Coach Quinn to make a statement like that.....
Honestly, I want somebody that has never had an affiliation with the team before to be the next coach. Pining for Todd and Jay back doesn’t give the Sharks any FRESH eyes on the team.
I wouldn't dissuade a few former Sharks like Joel Ward from applying. But yeah, I agree, a big no to Tmac.
Honestly I wasn't surprised with this, he may have said all the right things this past season but he definitely was a good coach with the in game actions. There were so many losses it seemed where you could see an "I give up" body language from him and he hadn't even used his timeout yet, to me when your team is struggling and losing control and momentum you do everything in your power to get it back but time and time again he just didn't do those things and at the end of those games he had a tone of washing his hands and putting things off on the players, which would have sat better if he didn't lose with card in his hand that he could have used.
As a casual fan, I think the Sharks need to finish near the bottom of the standings next year as well, so Grier can get more Top 5 draft picks.
Sharks fan here but Neptune couldn't have turned this talentless train wreck of a team around. The Sharks were PAINFUL to watch. If Grier is putting Quinn out of his misery as a "mercy firing" yeah, well, okay, I can see that. If the locker room was toxic towards Quinn, I can see that too. My question otherwise is: what's the point? Taking heat off the GM or ownership? Why? Who can't see that this team is re-building from the ground up? This isn't going to happen overnight. Even with the huge salary cap space the Sharks have, this team is 3 years away from being competitive.
A NO to Todd McClellan...and even bigger NO to Jay Woodcroft. The choice is already there behind the bench Ryan Warshofsky. One publication calls him of the brightest minds in the game and a future NHL head coach

What’s more shocking than the Quinn firing is Head Athletic Trainer Ray Tufts firing after 27yrs. We allegedly had the most games missed due to injury.
Wow, just saw this! I have to hear more. I am shocked, that the Sharks, sort of, did Quinn dirty? Which coach wants to come in, and coach a team, that, is, not only rebuilding, but publically, tanking!? That's worse! The writing is on the wall "This is a stop gap/temporary job, so don't get to settled in." Quinn, doesn't even get to develop players, that Grier drafted/signed.
Saying that though, I didn't care for the Quinn hire. His resume, along with his coaching, didn't do it for me. However, I got it. He was the type of coach, to get you through, those down years , a Stop gap coach. (Plus, which established veteran coach, wants to coach during a "tanking year"? That is a lot of work.)
Quinn was not the coach to develop high end talent, that is about to come. The future is reserved, for a more bona fide Head Coach. Who that is? I don't know
Sharks need a guy like Gerard Gallant or wouldn’t hate seeing Craig Berube
Firing was unfair for Quinn, this team was built to lose and we accomplished that goal. Not much in sports in fair though - tell that to Mark Jackson in 2014. Hoping for a similar turnaround here
My pick for next coach would be Jay Woodcroft - he was just the fall guy in a tough sports market, the season prior they had 50 wins
Quinn was a fall guy, both for the Rangers and the Sharks. Ownership/management knew the teams they put on ice was not playoff-capable.
Idk man kinda pissed at this move, mostly because it doesn’t seem like there’s a worthwhile replacement lined up. I think Quinn did about as well as could be expected with this team, but as others have mentioned dropping two consecutive losses with ten allowed goals doesn’t exactly reflect well on his abilities as a coach. He was definitely going to be replaced as part of the rebuild but this just feels premature
I guess like, I don’t see the harm in letting him tread water for another season. It’s not like the end of this rebuild is just around the corner, there’s still a few years of tanking and developing prospects left. It feels weird to change coaches right before the hump, if that makes any sense
I’d like to see Marco Sturm get an interview. Coached Team Germany in a past Olympics and currently in the LA King system (AHL Coach). Oh hey, how about Sturm, Jumbo & Marleau?
Quinn seems like a good man & I wish him well going forward, but I’m pleased with this move. Other teams would have done the same thing. Lastly, Quinn’s still got 1 year left on his contract, so he’ll be fine.
I was thinking with all the good coaches available they maybe thought now was a time to make a move. Woodcroft immediately came to mind.
I thought the same. With the playoffs still full swing there will be some time to shop for the right guy, and to me, the move at HC is more about “next step of the rebuild” than Quinn doing a horrible job. Quinn was the right guy for his time, but imo GMMG wants to solve the issue sooner rather than later.

Grier should be next and replaced by Dan Boyle.

I loved watching Mike Greir when he played, but I'm unconvinced in his ability as a gm. He's made some puzzling decisions, and deserves some blame. To some extent, Quinn was set up to fail. No one could've succeeded with this past season's squad.

Surprised but not surprised. Coaching is not going to make this group of players good. The defensive players are not NHL level. 1/3 of the players will be out of the league when they leave the Sharks. There are a few interesting players but would be 3rd and 4th line on most teams 8:53 . A 500 record is still 3-4 years away. It’ll be ugly the next couple of years no matter the coach.

Never liked Quinn , he might be a good guy in person , but he came across as a jerk to me like he was always pissed off at the players . Looking forward to seeing a new coach .

This is crazy! How could Grier fire him after what he had to work with!? As a lifelong Sharks diehard I was completely fine with him staying and getting a chance with a actual roster
I don't understand this type of thinking. The team has been in a rebuild for both of Quinn's seasons. You should want a steady hand during the years you know you are going to be bad. You get a different coach once the team is ready to compete. The Sharks are still a few years away from that. Right now, you want the kids working hard, and learning to just keep focused on the next game, shrugging off the losses as they develop their game. Admittedly, I don't follow the Sharks closely, so maybe he was bad at that. But you can't expect a team with a roster like the Sharks have had the past two seasons to be doing any better than they have done.
Naturally I think people are going to look at the record during Quinn's tenure and have potential to tie that to this move by GMMG. But I think this move needs to be looked at with Grier's comments at the locker room clean out last week held to give this context. Grier said "We need to be harder to play against.", and this year we really weren't hard to play against. Not because we struggled to score, not because we had multiple games giving up 7 or more goals. The roster at the end of the day really didn't have a high level of compete around the roster. Yes the lund line came together and had a lot of compete to them, but what about the rest of the guys though? Ultimately I think that lack of compete and effort on a night to night basis from game 1 through 82 was why Grier elected to make this change now.
I'll also add, Grier may have been rushed to select a coach after being hired 2 years ago after the previous regime elected to keep Boughner whom Grier wasn't interested in retaining. Quinn and the rest of the staff did an exceptional job at keeping the energy up amongst this past season's roster and doing so well at minimizing the negativity and/or the infighting that can occur during the course of a 50+ loss season with a group of professionals that all want to win.
My exact thought too. The exit interviews with the players must have been a disaster to warrant his firing.

About time
This was a shocker to me, as Quinn is a really good coach in terms of knowing the game of hockey and coaching. Mike Grier always has more inside knowledge and reticence to keep some of the reasons private, so it does seem like unfair scapegoating of a good coach sunk by a rotten team with no chemistry. Quinn will probably get over this shock and get a better job with another NHL team, and do much better. Sharks were starting to make some progress in changing team identity and now another coach will continue the experiment, hopefully with better player procurement by Grier and scouts. A player-coach like Joe Thornton or Joel Ward could probably relate better to young players more than a detached, highly intellectual/thinker type like David Quinn. I think Quinn did try his hardest and it was not good enough. Let us see if Mike Grier can hire a better or more effective coach. NHL is really a cruel business for players and coaches, but at least Quinn gets another year of salary from his 3 year contract with Sharks until he lands another job. Maybe Quinn will heal from this shock faster rather than go through another big losing season. MIke Grier keeps disposing of players and staff that fans liked, so he must do better or move on himself as the buck stops with him. GM is ultimately responsible for the team on the ice and its supports. Grier's win-loss record as GM is also the same as David Quinn's after 2 years.
Quinn is a terrible X and O’s coach. He also is bad at developing.
I honestly thought (and hoped) Quinn was going to get one more year. He has been a good coach stuck with a crappy rebuild process.

Diehards yearn for the days of McLellan and DeBoer again. But - its to the cellar for awhile, and hope there is a resurgence. Sharks are still 1 of 5 teams who have not won a cup. Let's hope they won't be the last to win.

I am so over the moon he’s gone I’ve been saying it all year he needs to go and I think that John McCarthy should be next and sent packing as the Barracuda were not able to reach their full potential this season after the heartbreak of missing out on the last playoff spot on a tiebreaker last season 🦈🦈🦈

Sharks couldn't win with this roster no matter who the coach was blame GM. GOALIE MUSICAL CHAIRS WAS ESPECIALLY EGREGIOUS
