The tail boom and tail rotor aren’t armored. The cockpit glass is only armored in the front of the pilot and gunner. The pilot and gunner wear a huge and very protective helmet to protect themselves from rounds entering the side cockpit glass. Even then, the frontal armor is only really meant for at most 23mm. Can it protect you from 30mm? Yeah, a bit. The hind is perfectly capable of making it back to base with one engine. Or in some cases even complete its mission. Check the panel near the bottom left of the cockpit. Near the landing gear switch. The Hind hasn't dampened my desire for the Kiowa or Apache, but it really does scratch that itch for strafing things on the ground, with the guided missiles easy to use and nice for squashing AAA. It is straightforwards to use as well so it's nice if you don't want to think too hard about things. As a background I spend quite a lot of time scouting in the Gazelle L. Which is great and flying with others I'll probably still fly it a lot but it's only really good for strafing unarmed vehicles and only one or two afvs. It gets cut to pieces really easily which isn't great so it really can't operate alone, so I get frustrated when I get the uge to go strafing in a helicopter. The M is cool but the laser rangefinder's broken and you have a 50m safety buffer between your range and the range of barrel launched ATGMs so where you have to hover stationary often you just get killed ow with the Gazelle M facing off against tanks. Pro Tip for buying a DCS Helicopter, Ask yourself: "Do I own rudder pedal's?" - A: "Yes" Then buy DCS Helicopter! B: Answer is "No" Than perhaps hold off and buy rudder peddles first! I suggest the MFG Crosswinds.
I have a Warthog HOTAS. I use one of the engine throttles for the tail rotor. It give you the fine control you need for helos. I tried just about everything, twist sticks don't have the fine control. Anyways, it's good advice: You can't fly a helo without some kind of fine control for the tail rotor.
It's also an amazing module to come out with the 14 day free trial system, because the operator seat is easy to learn, doesn't require track IR or a hotas (I know the helicopter can be flown from there, but you know what I mean) and it's now free...so it's a good way to get some friends in there that do not want to splash hundreds of bucks to "try" DCS full fidelity ...
For those wondering, the 'CCIP' is done with AoA,Alt, and Speed. If you are erratic in your approach it will be inaccurate. You want to put the Cross hairs on your target, and hold it there until the Yellow light on the opposite side of the green, turns on. That is 'Authorized to fire light'. ALSO Spud is VERY scared of a blade stalls, but you can go WAY faster and be MORE AGRESSIVE than he was. It is not like the Huey's VRS, the Heli will simply begin to ROLL to the right(@350), and all you have to do is Input right rudder, and keep her level. Be calm, Even if you ignore her and roll Her over. Keep the blades level, Keep the nose level as gently as you can, and the engines will probably die, but if you glide for JUST afew seconds, they'll wind back up and you are good to go. The Mi24P is just as tough as the A10C
The only Desync issues I have had in MP is when the Operator releases flares he is the only one that sees it. If the pilot releases flares it is visible to all. Random wobbles are present but that depends on the ping of the pilot from what I have seen.
Helicopters with fixed forward firing guns are underrated as hell. Choppers like the ah-6 littlebird with it's 2 mini guns or the cobra with a mounted 20mm vulcan are cool as hell. The gun on the Hind P takes the cake though. Its like an a-10 that can hover and deploy troops.
Hello Spudknocker, I found Hind a little easier to fly than Gazzelle, since the latter doesn't have a trimmer at all and is much lighter. But the important thing is, how to set up and tune axis, especially for the rudder input. What about the curvature and saturation? Rudder input can't be over-sensitive since it makes flying at low speeds a real challenge.
The first thing i noticed was how similar it flies to the Mi-8MTV2 but surprisingly much more steady/stable as in it doesnt drift that much nor does it go berserk too easily if i oversteer. Not really buyer's remorse but it seems just too similar to the Mi-8MTV2 but then again im a sucker for helicopters and this one seems to be easier to fly. I just wish i could completely remove the mirrors in cockpit view (and also the HUD lines).
Systems wise the 24 was built on the bones of the 8. It's part of the reason a lot of us were flying the 8 to prep for the 24. The stub wings really help stabilize and settle it more than any of us anticipated
Mixed feelings about this. The Hind is a brutal machine and the current features are enough to keep us entertained for hours and hours. Didn't really notice any big glitches apart from a glitchy trimmer and unresponsive Petrovich. BUT The lack of a campaign, the shallowness of the CMS system and the bare tutorials don't really feel like it's worth the full price. I suggest everyone to play the free trial and decide. It will become amazing though, that I'm sure of.
My first helicopter. Probably not the best choice lol, the learning curve is steep, but once I realized that the throttle levers need to be left in the middle position, flying is easier now :)
You forgot the fan, (wait, you did it later…) environment condition systems, and the aircraft did not pressurize on your startup. (A couple of those are critical, especially the fan)
The multicrew problem i have with all other helicopters as well. I think its not on the module but generally a problem still. Tried Gazelle and Huey Multicrew. Hope they will fix it latest with apache odule. The Hind is pretty cool but it will take me some time to learn it.
from what i heard, most hind pilots had their gear down due to the fact when they needed to do emergency landings, now the problem was is that when it was up it took too long to get out, so having your gears down would most likely be better as you wouldn't have much of a hard landing. I can't quite remember, but i do believe there were versions that had the gear stowed remove.
Question is this on Console? I doubt it but if so how do I go about starting this game? I mean the level of detail is insane! I know little about air craft but I'm very interested. I'm coming from BF3 and 4 dogfights and this is a completely different animal! I'm just blown away with each video.
It's on PC only and you can test every aircraft including this one for 2 weeks. PC has to be somewhat decent but you can do it on like a 4-5 years old gaming machine if you keep the settings low. Also it's almost impossible with mouse and keyboard only and hard with a controller - made for joysticks. Maybe you can borrow one - lots of older gamers still have one from back in the day ^^. If you got that I'd give it a try. Pick a cool aircraft, watch some RUclips tutorials, try to replicate it. It's more like learning an instrument like a piano or violin than your usual videogame that can be understood in a minute but also much more rewarding. That said, Microsoft Flight Simulator comes to Xbox in a couple weeks. It's not cool military aircrafts but still a good way to get a feel how it's like to play a serious flight sim. DCS is a bit more hardcore than that even if you put MSFS on full tryhard realism mode but you still see if it's your cup of tea.
What are your sensitivity settings, because it is so difficult nearly all the time. I have constant control issues with uncontrollable movement to the left on the vertical axis.
Is it possible to play this helicopter with just M&KB? I tried some free modules such as the CH47 and it has no flight control but everything else does work. I am wondering whether this module gives you the ability to fly with M&KB, just like the other modules like MiG-29.
Have not seen a video using the cannon yet. I assume it doesn't work. I jumped in and had no idea how to turn on weapons but a 30mm cannon was definitely what I wanted to try at the training range. Unfortunately my only option was to land my Hind in a newly created hind sized crater at cruising speed. This thing will make the apache feel like a f-18 compared to a warbird. Honestly easy to employ in a battlefield situation. Really just point and shoot. As for the joystick, I really miss my g940 FFB stick. Got that when ka50 first came out. When it finally had to be replaced I missed it for helos. Being able to trim and stick just stayed in position was intuitive. Centering sticks ALWAYS wobble when releasing the trimmer button.
So you didn't manage to fire the gun? What doesn't work? Perhaps you're experiencing a bug? Because it definitely is possible if everything is set up right. If you want to hear my personal opinion of it I'd say the gun is the highlight of the mi24's weaponry, I literally use it like a sniper seeing how the gun is just so precise and easy to aim with the sight.
I had just jumped in without watching or reading anything. Like a kid on Christmas. Figured I would figure it all out. So while I was getting to grips with the flight model I was also fumbling with all the switches did not prove very useful. I watched a few videos and found the Russian equivalent of the "master arm" switch. 🤣 Only bug was user error. 🤣
@@Power5 haha, that's the spirit ! It was feeling like Christmas for me too, except I watched Matt Wagner's introduction videos to the hind a million times before so I somewhat knew what I was doing ; )
The KA-50 is a straight up newer aircraft, of course it is objectively "better." Some of us like the old beaters for their own sake, DCS covers a wide range of eras.
Pedals. You really want pedals for any helo in DCS (not quite as important for the Black Shark), as a stick twist will become really annoying, imho. Other than that, the best stick/throttle you are willing to pay for. And some type of head tracking, either through VR, TrackIR, or the budget FaceTrackNoIR option.
One other word of advice, avoid Saitek, IMHO. A cheaper controller that breaks much more frequently can become a lot more expensive in the long run. So you will want to do some research.
@@tomriley5790 It's a Kamov scheme... thing. Not to mention it was never really fielded. Although Ka-52 is not much more of a helicopter either. Edit: that's right, I think I have a good description for it - a manned drone (if that makes any sense).
@@tomriley5790 And it flies like a drone. You can call it what you wish, but it makes absolutely no sense of ED to include it in DCS while it's taking them forever with other relatively modern Soviet/Russian equipment. And at the very least it should have been Ka-52 instead. Better yet, a Mi-28.
I have most the planes and all the helis and can jump from each one not killing myself but only really would say I am capable in 6. Of those I consider being "type rated" in the 16, Harrier and all warbirds. Anyone who has a deep knowledge of most and are looking to tackle the Mi 24 and waiting for the Apache should consider joining the military. Evenwith aTM hotas, custom keyboard and a additional mappable pad I can get totally confused.
What are you having trouble with ?? other than the AI there isn't really anything extra to be mapped, I have the TM warthog as well, I put Petro AI on the TMS hat and Observe on DMS down. For showing the AI menu I use the pinky button, for looking through the gunners sight I use the missle step button on the side. I fly in VR so I try and avoid using the keyboard where possiple, I use left ctrl as a modifier and then use my hotas for the extra binds like knee board etc.. These I try and keep the same for all modules. Flying can quite a be a little tricky , I trim out before the hover check which I find easier. For landings I treat it like the MI8, I have VRS a couple (ok more than a couple!) but now getting the hang on how much I can push the decent. I think the thing that can be catching people out is the tail rotor, the hind uses pedal dampners so you can get out of wack with pedal movement, you have to be quite slow on the pedals. You can turn off the damper, its under a red safty switch on the front panel, left side (just above the main rotor RPM guage) This then makes the pedals move in time with your own pedals (might help a bit).
What were they thinking when they installed that fan🤔 Let’s put it directly in our FoV. Too bad they didn’t give us the option to make it a little more translucent…though I guess it’s just something that you’d get used to. Would be great to see some missions with the Mi24

90% of helicopters out there including in DCS have fixed landing gear or skids, it can definitely be an easy thing to forget when you are inundated by the complexity of flying a helo when you aren't yet very experienced in them. Gear up landings happen all the time and its why special training is required for pilots to fly aircraft with retractable landing gear whether fixed or rotary winged. I find it interesting that there is no gear warning or horn in the Mi-24.

The Turkish invasion of Cyprus was 1974 me old mucker, not the 90's
Well messed that one up… oh well haha
It's also an amazing module to come out with the 14 day free trial system, because the operator seat is easy to learn, doesn't require track IR or a hotas (I know the helicopter can be flown from there, but you know what I mean) and it's now free...so it's a good way to get some friends in there that do not want to splash hundreds of bucks to "try" DCS full fidelity ...
Should I buy? I hit that pre-purchase button the day it went up...
I'm pretty happy about this, new modules are always happy. However, I'm most looking forward to the Apache ;)
Early cobra in nam do exactly the same as the hind, even many late variants in 80’s,because of those technology limits
I watched this before finalizing my decision on buying it, thanks for going into detail and keeping it fun with shooting live targets!
Very first attack helicopter modeled in dcs you say? Sharks gonna get ya
And Gazzelle can carry guided missiles too, so we can call her a "light attack helicopter".
Do not turn on the Doppler airspeed switch on the left panel as it is broken atm. It works backwards so down is on and up is off.
oh no, crud
Pre order gang reporting in!
Here👋😜
This video will be my guide as to whether I buy the module. Thanks
Awesome!
Probably yes if Hind Ops is your kind of mission type. It's pretty awesome.
Just download it and try it for free for 2 weeks. Make your own decision
First of all. Turks invaded Cyprous in the 70s not 90s. Also they got the 24s about 20 years ago and they did not fight in the invasion.
Thank you for making us feel smarter, spud
Petrovich voice lines: 'Yuri, where's the vodka?'
I preordered the Hind in my opinion its a perfect cross between an apache and an a-10.
More like KA-50 and SU-25T xD
But I get what you're meaning
@@headiii_plays *su-25A
Yes, but without precisie targeting systems of both.
@@jakubdabrowski3846 I can say that I'm definitely happy with her :)
@@headiii_plays Yea i definitely see the KA-50 I don't have enough time on the SU-25 I mainly fly the A-10 :)
20-30 curvature is good for a twist grip - 15-25 for a rocker type yaw control - 0-5 for rudder pedals
That fan looks like it is using the fancy motion blur tech that was recently added to the warbirds. :)
Wouldn’t be surprised 😂
Definitely the manliest helicopter ever built!
It’s a lot faster than the mi8, but I can see what you’re saying.
Mixed feelings about this.
The Hind is a brutal machine and the current features are enough to keep us entertained for hours and hours. Didn't really notice any big glitches apart from a glitchy trimmer and unresponsive Petrovich.
BUT
The lack of a campaign, the shallowness of the CMS system and the bare tutorials don't really feel like it's worth the full price. I suggest everyone to play the free trial and decide.
It will become amazing though, that I'm sure of.
Great! I enjoy flying this monster.
"wish you could shade the lamp with your hand to see if it's lit"
perhaps they could do this. an anti-flashlight. makes a region less lit.
Thank you Spud for the video.
My first helicopter. Probably not the best choice lol, the learning curve is steep, but once I realized that the throttle levers need to be left in the middle position, flying is easier now :)
Im 21 minutes in. Does Spud ever put the gear up? :)
9 minutes later 😂
You forgot the fan, (wait, you did it later…) environment condition systems, and the aircraft did not pressurize on your startup. (A couple of those are critical, especially the fan)
This looks really really cool!
Nice video Spud what is your screen reference ? looks like a nice ratio to fly with
Do you like flying straight, are you scared by turning? Then the hind is the helicopter for you
Maybe just learn to turn?
That said, I haven't tried it with the SAS crap on, maybe that's what is getting in the way...
You need to turn it almost like an airplane... the wings are giving a lot of the lift at high speeds
I can't quite remember, but i do believe there were versions that had the gear stowed remove.
ironically the mi8s rotor brake was the only thing i forgot for its entire startup on my first cold start
every since dayz watching the runningman back in the day i always wanted to fly hind but never had a pc the time hase come
Nobody talks about the Shark anymore smh
The Huey is a great helicopter.
It’s pretty great - but I gotta say this heli feels much more stable and smooth sometimes
12:00 make sure AIRSPEED TO DOPPLER stays OFF.
It will mess up your moving map display.
@2:23 Cypriot is pronounced "Sih-pree-ut", rather than "Sai-pree-ut".
I’m just waiting for my Apache
Hey Spud, I was gonna buy the Mi-24 but thought it might be too much in resemblance of the Mi-8, so I'm going to hang out for the Ah-64D.
Approved!
Do you have a video on how to use the troop transport features of this helicopter? Are they even in yet?
Vne is not really an issue, you can easily go 330 without issues(well you won’t hit that speed with full rockets ofc but still)
Have not seen a video using the cannon yet.
You assume incorrectly, it works... and it’s beautiful
I notice when you play as RED coalition Petrovich can't see any OTAN BLUE target
I've found out that Petrovich can't tell an enemy from a friend, it literally shoots everything.
I hope they implement some sort of IFF soon.
Excellent skills ! .............aaaas always ! ;-)
Its cool, especially with multi-crew, but the KA-50 is so much better IMO, gimbal mounted gun, can carry way more ATGM's, way better NAV system.
The KA-50 is a straight up newer aircraft, of course it is objectively "better." Some of us like the old beaters for their own sake, DCS covers a wide range of eras.
"Should You Buy?"
me: _too late_
LOL! Sorry I didnt get it out earlier for you! haha
How about a video giving suggestions for controller setup (T.16000FCS, Warthog, etc.)?
@AesirHunter Those look really good, especially if you have a brake lever in front of your stick / cyclic.
What head tracking hardware do you use?
TrackIR
Hey. Do you have manuals for this aircraft?
There's something missing from this vid, as always, so to speak.
First attack helicopter - Black Shark - am I nothing to you? :-(
That's not a helicopter.
@@getsideways7257 what is it?
@@tomriley5790 It's a Kamov scheme... thing. Not to mention it was never really fielded. Although Ka-52 is not much more of a helicopter either.
Edit: that's right, I think I have a good description for it - a manned drone (if that makes any sense).
@@getsideways7257 it's a helicopter with contrarotating main rotas, negating the need for a tail rota. It's still a helicopter.
In case you are forgetting, there are also people too old for the military (or just not having good enough health).
@spudknocker: Training with Casmo paid off I guess :-)
Good thing hot starts are not modelled in this!
Question: Does Peetrovich Ai have ANY Voicelines? Like JEster AI?
They want to implement 2 voices one for the gunner and one for the pilot.
Both with russian and english voice lines.
as always!
No the map is not microfiche, it is a standard paper map with a crosshair that moves.
You forgot to put up your landing gear. :)
I’m curious, genuinely. Is the KA50 not considered an attack heli, or do you mean 2 man attack helis - like the Apache or KA52, or indeed, the hind?
Weird that Brazil operates this heli ...
What were they thinking when they installed that fan🤔 Let’s put it directly in our FoV. Too bad they didn’t give us the option to make it a little more translucent…though I guess it’s just something that you’d get used to.
Would be great to see some missions with the Mi24
It's really not that bad
@@FG-td4vs Plus, there is always the Wonder Woman option.

Mi-24 is an oppressor? You mean a conflict resolver? :)
Yeah... The US has been known to 'liberate' people from democracies. I'd much prefer to put down the Kool-Aid and flags, and just enjoy a sweet helicopter.
A single Mi-24 flown by a South African pilot prevented rebels from destroying Sierra Leone while the UN watched and did nothing and prevented the fall of Syria to ISIS. I'd say it's a symbol of freedom and progress. :)
@@DeathBlossom867 Sierra Leone's government was less bad than the rebels, but they were hardly 'good guys'. Ditto for Assad's regime vs ISIS in Syria. The only real symbol of freedom and progress in Syria were the Kurds, IMHO.
Can't Eagle ask the countries that owns the certain Aircrafts? Like they can ask Indian can they use the SU-30 MK1? Or that Russian law works for all? And I can't wait to try the Hind, when we're able to get gaming pc parts. I been wanting to get into Dcs for a while, Arma 3 had been my dcs 😹.
Every country has specific laws about top secret military files. I'm honestly surprised that Russia allowed the Hind to be developed, considering it's still in use in so many countries.
@@theonefrancis696 I'm surprised they did it for the KA-50 as well, I wonder what's so secret about the rest like the SU-30.
@@subjectc7505 well the Ka50 is a retired chopper, it was replaced by the Ka-52 after the Chechen Wars.

'Not a expert on flying helicopters'... I thought raising landing gear was universal?...
@@Spudknocker bitching betty will start bitching if you try to land with the gear up.
but she bitches in russian.
is this a helicopter I should avoid like the plague until they get the AI figured out? I would like to fly this single-pilot with some AI if it's working. But I don't care whether I am in front or back. I just want to join my buddies who fly the KA-50's and I will provide support for them in the HIND just by myself What is the best way to go about this knowing that the Hind is updated to 10 March, 2023 up to this point and that I will be having to learn the systems and flight dynamics in order to be able to just fly this beast, much less have to understand the weapons systems. Any AI that can be used for that is a bonus for sure. Or should I just stay away from this tangled web of wires and complicated systems? Any help is appreciated!!!!! So in other words, should this be only used if I have two real people flying it?

"For US in the West... a symbol of comunist oppression" 🤣🤣🤣 Hilarious!!! You really got me there.
You could have made it perfect however by pointing out that for "us in the West" 🤣 the Huey is a "symbol of love, freedom and democracy" that "we in the West” generously spread over Vietnam just to mention one....
When I hear that I see the Hollywood "bringing democracy and freedom" type propaganda in my mind.
Stereotypical for sure.
It is just a bit absurd from my point of view as my fellow neighboring countries fly and actively use the hind without ever even taking notice of the fact that "the hind is cold war soviet equipment so it must be the helo of the bad guys" mentality that some genuinely believe applies to most people ("for US in the west").
Yeah, for sure, I see where he's coming from, this way to describe the hind is quite stereotypical for a lot of people but for some this stereotype is quite distant from the truth.
No offense to spudknocker of course, I just wanted to comment what I thought of that.

"A symbol of communist oppression". Come on, man. I'm not even Russian but you could literally make that same argument about every US module from the Mustang to the A10 and F/A18 (in the latter case probably even more so by the rest of the world).
