Hey Rick! It took many years but I found the perfect shorts for normal runners! Lulemon Surge Lined Short 6". Have a big pocket for the phone that doesn't move, another pocket for keys that doesn't move, back pocket for gels/gummy bears, and elastic bands to stash your shirt when you take it off. I love them!
Y'all are so uplifting and funny! I laugh and learn from all your podcasts. When my sons were in high school the joke was if you did not remember a girl's name just call her Hannah since there was a good chance that would be her name. Apparently, Hannah was very popular baby name in early 2000's. (in Texas, at least)
My techique for my house key is to keep it on a hair elastic which I can loop through a suitable spot on my clothes / canicross belt / running vest or even around my wrist in a pinch. Makes it much quicker to attach and detach.
In winter I run with a chest strap for the heart rate so the watch can go over the sleeve regardless of the running jacket that I wear 😀 . Also let me introduce you to trail running shorts, they're running shorts but with pockets all around the waist 😁 ; I comfortably carry my phone, keys and gels/bars and they don't bounce around. Also Decathlon sells what they call Marathon Belt so you can use your favorite kit even if it doesn't have pockets and still carry your essentials comfortably. Also I have a very light rain jacket, it folds into a pocket so you can carry it and whip it out when needed, but it's not only good for rain, if it's windy it will stop the cold air as well. I run almost every day all year round so I have the right kit for most weather conditions 😎 . Except when it's pouring, no matter what kit you have, wet feet and shoes are unavoidable 😅 .
Andy, I can totally feel for you about the post marathon blues....I ran my last marathon back in Oct and since then I have also not really been able to get back in the groove for running. Lets hope we can both get back after it and have a great 2024
For Andy's marathon, how about the Sydney Marathon on 15th September? It's a candidate race for becoming a marathon major and well, it's stunning Sydney! 🇦🇺 Thank you all so much for brightening my mornings listening to your podcast at my work desk, I always have to suppress my laughter so the whole office doesn't think I'm going mad! 😂
Rick complaining about pockets in men's running shorts... may I introduce you to all of women's clothing, please? lol Thanks for always putting out content to brighten my week :)
Stepone underwear changed my hiking life after a particularly bad chaffing incident. Reckon very transferrable to running although I tend to go commando as all my shorts have an inner and don't see the point in an extra layer. The phone solution for me is a running belt. Very light weight and I need my phone for the music! This podcast was a giggle to watch and not surprised you guys are killing it. So entertaining, such real people with a great rapport with each other. This channel is going from strength to strength and you guys should be so proud of where you've got to and where it's heading. Keep up the fantastic work.
I absolutely loved this episode 😂. Episodes should always be this long. As for the cycling to running. I've just started cycling. Yesterday on Zwift. I did 53km and burned 933 calories, and today, on my easy 10 mile run, I burned 1000 calories. So I would say you are right based on calories 🙂 10k will be around the 40k of cycling.
I’m so glad I heard you talk about shorts not being able to hold a normal sized phone without it flapping about in your pocket when you run. I feel your pain. Some sportswear designers need to speak to normal everyday runners and ask what they need.
You’ve given me an appreciation for something I never considered before: it never occurred to me that “paying to use a track” was a consideration for people in some places. I’m gonna do a long run this weekend and hit all the tracks in my city 😅
I struggled with the keys and phone problem for ages when I started. My go to solution is a flip belt, I don't even notice it's there most of the time.
My best piece is a puffer vest, ive often found most running jackets and zip ups just too warm when i get going even if its freezing cold. And i can take it right into spring, as its still fairly chilly here march to (sometimes) may.
For a key (and a card sometimes) I take a lanyard. The plastic bit comes off when I just need my key, which clips in where the plastic I'd card holder bit would have been. I tie a bobble around so it doesn't jingle about too. And if I need to take money, I slip the plastic I'd card holder bit back onto the lanyard, tape a £5 note to the inside, pop my debit card in the holder, and then tape the key to the black of the holder so again it doesn't jingle about. Seems to work pretty good :) if you don't have a hole in your key then I'm sure you can fashion a small plastic pouch, but honestly it's my go to thing. The bobble is super necessary though because that clanging sound of the key, no thanks
Pocket problem: Underarmour has a series of shorts with a “Speedpocket”. Those have a horizontal, iPhone-sized pocket in the waistband. Also fits a small gel in addition. Nothing wobbles.
Track running is great but it really varies so much by country. Living in Belgium, there was a free track near my home, and while living in Madrid I could go to any track in the city for a few euros a month. But in the Netherlands where I live now you can only run with the athletics club. Hearing you talk about track running does tempt me, but I don't really want to join a club. And I feel they shouldn't be restricted like that? They have a beautiful track but except for a few evening and weekend hours, it's just not used...
My solution to the pockets question is to wear a running vest (instead of shorts). Vest has more than enough storage space 🙂 If I don't want to wear the vest, I use zipped Flipbelt. It has enough space for most phones and a pocket for keys.
To the question of Sarah: If the weather allows me I sometimes switch a 10k easy run for a 2 hour bike ride. I then roughly ride 50 to 60k. As it has been explained to me that you need to dubbel the time at a minimum to have the same aerobic stimulus. For me personally a bike ride insures me that I’m working on low aerobic capacity.
I was forever buying those shorts with an inner lycra with phone pocket. I have the Samsung Fold 4 which you really feel when running bobbing about. I've recently invested in the Garmin Epix Gen 2 which gives me music so I've ditched the phone and now only need to buy shorts/leggings with a small zipped pocked for key. I did a half marathon for training today and felt so free not lugging around the phone!
My preferred running shorts for daily running are from a company called “32° Cool” that I found at Costco. I’ve never heard of that company before, and they’re not particularly good running shirts, but they have pockets with zippers. I don’t wear them for races, but on daily runs I’m terrified my keys will bounce out if I don’t have them in a zippered pocket. Honestly, Costco has a lot of what I wear - socks, underwear, shorts, half my shirts. Decathlon has a lot of the rest. My phone goes out a little pack that I got from Decathlon for less than $20 CAD, and I’ll throw energy chews in there too. Also, I run in Canada in winter, and I refuse to wear tights or sleeves.
On the point of storing your keys. A lot of runningshorts have a little square pocket on the inside of the waistband. This is specifically designed for storing a key or small keyring.
That was great and uplifting haha. Andy’s marathon suggestion: Queenstown Marathon Nov. 16! It is known as “the prettiest” marathon in the world! Going to find that heart rate adjusting video now, thanks!
Clothes, usually. But of course it depends on the run. Sometimes when i feel sudden strange movements in my belly i just sprint from bed to toilet, not bothering equipping any kind of kit.
I love how Andy is always saying he doesnt or didnt need certain things and Rick's problems are just Rick's problems 😂😂 not Andy problems with 😂 Loved this episode, yall are such a joy ❤
This episode has probably been one of my favourites so far! I could have watched an hour of this, hearing more opinions and jokes. Thank you for another great episode and I look forward to the next one!!
I bought trailrunning shorts from Evadict (Decathlon trail brand) lots of large handy pockets, or a small running belt, holds my phone and a 250 ml softflask!
I cycle and run and what I consider comparable varies so much depending on my current training. Normally I think 100km bike ride is roughly equivalent to a half marathon, but last year I was training for a 300km ride and running a lot less so got to a point where the effort for a half marathon was about the same as a 160km ride.
Keys attached to shoe laces!? Sarah pointed out one disadvantage -- sodding about with your laces when you are desperate for the WC -- and, being a poor, weak, permanently weary OAP, going down on one knee, then the other, to fumble with my laces with frozen hands is impactable. And standing up again is no joke. Especially as I live opposite a busy bust stop. That said, groping down the front of my shorts to retrieve my keys from a conventional key-pocket isn't a good look either; and it can bring tears to the eyes. I always rate a phone-belt with a key compartment is the best bet for keeping a comfortable distance between cold hands and the more sensitive parts of the anatomy. Oh, and Rick, I live in sunny Southampton. We seem to be getting Manchester's weather at present.
I’m all about the layers! But my best buy ever, was a New Balance running windcheater, very light on the back, a good solid windbreak front and zip, semi glove extra long sleeves and a high neck. Very light and I can wear it spring and winter. Also good pockets. 8 years of use so far! On the post marathon blues totally get the same thing, I tend to miss the routine and the progression of gains, everything feels like I’m going backwards lol. Btw I heard Honolulu is wonderful in December 😂 Also.. woohoo on getting more people on tracks for intervals, I’ve been banging that drum for 15 years with little impact.😢😂
Thanks Andy (@25:10) i will only train (run/cycle) with a HR strap as the wrist pick up on my Garmin 645 Music is very poor and gives random heart rate - clearly i have boney wrists too 😅
Thanks for your answer to Hannah's (from Amsterdam🤣🤣🤣) question... I've been struggling with the exact same issue. Set up HRR on my Garmin today and the zones are much more like I would expect them to be! Happy days! 🏃🏃🏃 Thanks for keeping up the great content!
I Put my spare car key in a lockbox and put the box under the car. Works well for open water swimming and stand up paddeling. Old car. Not keyless entry.
For shorts with a pocket big enough for an iPhone - I use the Adidas "Designed 4 Running" shorts. The 2 pockets on the back easily take an iPhone 12, AirPods case, and keys! For underwear, I can happily recommend Runderwear.
Love my Nike Stride and Under Armour Qualifier shorts as they can take both my iPhone and my keys! My New Balance shorts though.. pocket too small for a phone, too big for just gels and key… but they feel better overall as running shorts. Some companies only do a half-a-great design, imho
Ok Andy…… how about going to Memphis for the St. Jude Marathon Dec7, 2024 and take a tour of the hospital. 🙏❤️ or Berlin Sept 29, Oslo Sept 21, Greece Nov 10 and Venice Oct 27. There are however 2 other marathons in Spain if you don’t want to travel. I'm going to buy a "burner phone" ... just useful for calls and text messages which will prevent a big phone on me and an increased risk of having my cell phone stolen. At the moment I use my running belt which is so useful.
"Pocket Paranoia" 🤣 I can't go for a simple run in my local area without packing for an overnight camp. No pockets in any of my shorts, but a running belt quells most of my anxious insecurities. TCA Running shorts, good size zip pocket or a running belt but I have recently gone to the S23 to have a smaller phone because the big ones are far too big and heavy, I just want a phone not a tablet.
I've done my first interval session however it was on the treadmill so wasn't as good but idk. Was doing kilometre repeats at 4:00 p/km speed (15 kph) and 8.6 kph speed jog rest. Is it any good? Im gonna include this km repeat speed session in my training and my long runs afterwards.
Never taken a phone with me in the 30 yrs i have been running..i want to escape the world not have it follow me around...entertaining podcast as always
I find double the time cycling is about the same as running. just based on how I feel afterwards. I have no idea on how that may relate to distance, also depends on your bike and the terrain, 40k on the road is very different to 40k off-road and more so on the bike than when running. Your mileage may vary, I know I am a better cyclist than runner.
Thanks for replying so quickly. I just double checked again and it's not there. On the app and the web version of Spotify. Last week's episode is the latest that's showing (I made sure to force refresh too). Anyway if it's just me I'm still glad to watch it here. But just flagging in case there's a small chance that it's not showing for everyone.
Here’s an idea: how about a sports bra review? And please could you have at least one bigger chested runner included. Many of us fall into this category but there aren’t enough recommendations for us!
@@runningchannel Loving it. One of my best buys for sure. Really useful for tracking pace and thus progressing in my running. Keep up the amazing vids!
I now will only buy shorts/leggings with pockets, and even sports bras where possible! For Berlin marathon I carried my phone, insulin pump, seven gels and a packet of haribo all in my shorts and bra!
I'm baffled by what the picture behind Andy might be. I bet it has something to do with running, but it looks like a scary face covered by a fluffy animal. I'm sure that's not it, but I can't seem to get a good view of it by zooming in. What is the picture of behind Andy?
Runderwear have the best running pants. I have a whole weeks worth of pants. I hate wearing cotton pants. I wear men's running shorts and shoes. Women's running shoes are too narrow and the shorts are too short.
After a sockless summer, in autumn it was getting colder and I thought I might need socks for winter. Now its -6 and im still running sockless. I use a running belt for my phone (ninepine) when I want music, and leave the door unlocked 😅

So true!!
Pockets are overrated for running anyway, stuff bounces around and flies out! Give me a vest or a flipbelt anyday.
@@asystole_ yup, I just use a flipbelt

Love this episode. My recent game changer was merino wool blend socks for cold weather after running in sub zero temps and everything froze 🥶.
I struggled with the keys and phone problem for ages when I started. My go to solution is a flip belt, I don't even notice it's there most of the time.
Oh really good idea. I used to unhook my front door key and put it down my sock lol.
A belt is really handy. Somehow my phone and keys destroy standard pockets in shorts.
The flip belt changed my life. I wore an arm band thing for my phone for years and the flip belt is so much more comfortable.
@@GTE_Channel totally. Mine cost a fiver from Mountain Warehouse. Fits phone and keys and don't notice it.

Best shorts are craft trail short tights. Big zip plus 2 mesh side pockets
I normally wear a thight fit nike pro running top nike dri-fit stride running shorts and adidas Trial running shoes for when im on my runs

Do you guys ever use a running belt?? Perfect for your phone, keys, and loop holes for gels, (kept good and tight) i find them great.

Adidas make downtime shorts which I find great for running. 3 zipped pockets and light weight material. Perfect for gels phone and keys.

Andy, which shorts were you talking about with the half Lycra undershort and phone pocket? Been looking for something like this! Thanks!

Is there a watch that can automatically set your zones based over the number of times you run
Most of them give you a rough estimate
Vibram Fivefingers FTW!
OMG I feel sooo lost after Valencia, also my first one! Completely goal-less
Have you signed up for anything else??
I can't be the only one who thought Tom and Sarah were dating
They are!
I second that😎
lol
I think they are but are probably trying to keep things professional! 😊
I was about to say, I could have sworn they were! Good for them
Never taken a phone with me in the 30 yrs i have been running..i want to escape the world not have it follow me around...entertaining podcast as always
That's very fair Gary
Running belt, phone and keys in pockets, swing the phone and keys round the back and run don't even notice it. Cost about £5 off amazon.
Looking forward to hearing Hannah’s questions. 😂
FLIPBelt best thing i have every brought, can fit every phone and more stuff
Can we have video podcasts on Spotify 🙏
It's all up now! Sorry for the delay!
Is the podcast no longer uploaded to Spotify?
It’s up there now 😁
Thanks for replying so quickly. I just double checked again and it's not there. On the app and the web version of Spotify. Last week's episode is the latest that's showing (I made sure to force refresh too).
Anyway if it's just me I'm still glad to watch it here. But just flagging in case there's a small chance that it's not showing for everyone.
I feel that cycling 2.5-3 times more distance of a run is equivalent.
Here’s an idea: how about a sports bra review? And please could you have at least one bigger chested runner included. Many of us fall into this category but there aren’t enough recommendations for us!
We will look into it!
Do the Athens marathon! It's in November but close enough to December I recon :P
Oooooo great suggestion
We need to avoid kit fixation. I wear a £40 pair of trainers and treated myself to the cheapest Garmin. That's it.
How are you finding your garmin? 😁
@@runningchannel Loving it. One of my best buys for sure. Really useful for tracking pace and thus progressing in my running. Keep up the amazing vids!
Almost thought this wasn't happening today 😅
It will be up on YT at 4pm every other Saturday 😁
Mine isn’t on apple podcast app!?!
It should be now! Sorry for the delay
I now will only buy shorts/leggings with pockets, and even sports bras where possible! For Berlin marathon I carried my phone, insulin pump, seven gels and a packet of haribo all in my shorts and bra!
Injinji 5 finger socks
You know the low after reaching a big goal is a very normal hormonal thing? Ask Andrew Huberman 😊
I’ve got an iPhone mini. Gutted apple have stopped making them. They are so much more convenient to run with.
They are great aren't they!
I literally can’t run in anything other than shorts and T-shirt, gloves get added if it’s below freezing but I just get so hot
I'm baffled by what the picture behind Andy might be. I bet it has something to do with running, but it looks like a scary face covered by a fluffy animal. I'm sure that's not it, but I can't seem to get a good view of it by zooming in. What is the picture of behind Andy?
I like that these podcasts and video's in general give really good advice but don't take themselves to serious.
Thanks!
Funniest episode so far. 😅
So glad you enjoyed it! 😁
Am I supposed to pay someone when I use a track?
It depends on which track you go to
Paddington track is free…
I have never and would never want to run with a phone in my shorts pocket.. if i need to take my phone on a run i just wear a running pack/vest
Question for the Running Channel, how long were Sarah and Andy talking until Rick was like I forgot to press record? 😂😅
Runderwear have the best running pants. I have a whole weeks worth of pants. I hate wearing cotton pants.
I wear men's running shorts and shoes. Women's running shoes are too narrow and the shorts are too short.
No upload to Spotify yet? Did you press record OK Rick?
It should be up there now!
@@runningchannel Expect your Spotify ranking to have plummeted this week - I listened via RUclips instead! 🤣
Trail running shorts have a decent amount of pokets.
Always shorts over tights because... (sorry)... 'gentleman's area'.
😂
I want a "run. improve. repeat." sweater so bad 😢
Are you coming to the National Running Show this weekend??
@@runningchannel unfortunately not (I am from Germany) :(
After a sockless summer, in autumn it was getting colder and I thought I might need socks for winter. Now its -6 and im still running sockless. I use a running belt for my phone (ninepine) when I want music, and leave the door unlocked 😅
Paying for getting on a track? Sounds weird. Not in Norway at least! 😄
It's only some tracks we have to pay for, but it's frustrating
My breath and steps 😅😅
